ipchains -I output -p udp --dport 4000 -j REJECT
That inserts the rule as the first output rule. If you know
where to place it in the firewall script, just use -A instead
of -I so it simply adds it.

I am trying to convert a realaudio-stream to a wav-file with vsound.
Therefor I entered the following command:
vsound -f output.wav rvplayer http://url_to_ram-file
Normally this should work, but I get this error
/usr/local/bin/vsound: /tmp/vsound18446.ioctl: Unknown file or directory
sox:Can't open input file '/tmp/vsound18446.raw':Unknown file or
directory
Does anybody have an idea what those ioctl files do, or how I can get
rid of this error?
Thanx,
Ben

This is linux not windows...
As far as I know there are no trojans on linux (unless some Greek geek
recently created an app called trojan)

Hi, i want to do the same thing than you.
And I succeed in "catching LILO's attention", and have a prompt on the
terminal. (by sending a break signal via the serial line)
But, I can't use the keyboard of my terminal to give parameters to LILO.
So, if you known how to use terminal keyboard to do that, I take it !
This is my conf :
****** /etc/lilo.conf **********
append = "console=ttyS1,9600"
boot=/dev/hda
compact
delay=60
vga=normal
root = current
serial=/boot/zImage
image=/boot/zImage
label=test
********** /etc/inittab ********** I added (or better, uncommented :):
TO:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS1 9600 vt100

Hi,
After long and hard work I finally got my isdncard working, but now I'm
really stuck, I can't get no further, I read several howto's, searched the
internet(with winblows), but I can't find an answer.
When I connect to the internet (ISP=freegates, Belgium), I can see all
the sites from my ISP, I mean that I can browse the sites from the domain,
freegates.be (actually they changed it to Tiscally), but any other sites are
unavailable. I can't even ping them, but I can perform an nslookup, and get
some IP's, but I can't ping them, I keep getting "Network unreachable".
I would realy like to solve this problem, any help is appreciated.
This is what I thougt was necessary top include, if there isn't enough
information, let me knwown and I'll post the rest.
Thanks Joris

don't know about TurboLinux, but two things to try are 1) downloading a
rescue disk off the net, and 2) looking at the cdrom folder that
contains disk images to see if there is a rescue image included.

The cable needs to be a null-modem cable (swap 2 & 3).
If there is not already a getty running on the serial port uncomment the
appropriate line in /etc/inittab. Issue a 'telinit -q' command as root.
You should see a login on the dumb terminal.
You may need to adjust the TERM variable depending on what kind of dumb
terminal you have.

Subject: NFS delay problem.
Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 18:22:11 +0200
Hi,
I have here some RedHat 6.1/i386 machines. One of them is a file server
which exports the home filesystem to all others (I use knfsd-1.4.7-7 and
knfsd-clients-1.4.7-7 rpms). The other side uses amd (am-utils-6.0.1-4
rpm) to automount this filesystem.
Quite often one edits a file on the server, saves changes, and then
compiles the source on another machine. The "make" often fails to see that
the source code file was changes. Usually it takes up to some 20 seconds
for the machine that mounts the filesystem with the source code file to
notice that it was changed (I can do "head my.file" and see that for a
quite long time the contents is not "updated", while directly on the
server it is).
Any help appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Jacek.

Yes it works.
I had :
hda1 : /boot
hda2 : nt4 ntfs
hda3 : win98 ft32
hda4 EXT
hda1 was active, with lilo in it, and I could boot hda2 or 3, or linux as
needed.
I wiped out the nt4, put in a fat16 partition there and installed win2k.
Then got win2k to convert it to ntfs .
Then when I activated the hda1,
I could still boot win2k by choosing NT4 ( That was the label for hda2 )
The OS or file system in a partition is not necessary for lilo.Just the boot
block.
If the partition type can be booted by the PS's BIOS, then lilo can boot it
as well.
PS : I left my mbr the way it was, and installed lilo into the boot block of
/hda1.
Redhat's installer asked where I wanted lilo ( in mbr or in the boot
block of hda1 ), so I chose hda1

GIGABYTE GA-7IX E is the one with 2 isa slots .
700 mhz amd Slot A processor ( A0700MPR24B A )
:)
Linux works on this, which is more than I can say for windows.been rebooting
and installing ad nauseum for 3 hrs. And it's almost there.
Had to nearly use a hammer when it kept saying that my isa ne2000 card was
not working( I got into linux, and through my gateway, went to the microsoft
site. I was connected with the very same card the windows said didn't @#!*
work.)
The board has an ata66 controller and the ata66 cable comes with it.
I plugged in my old 8 and 6 gig drives using normal hdd cables. they work.
If you don't go to ata66, then you are fine with old cables and/or old hdd.
If you _do_ run with ata 66, use the ata66 cable .
And ata66 is enabled only if you plug in a hdd that can use it.
There doesn't seem to be a way to change the transfer rates in the bios.
cheers

It's FAT16. I think now, however, that this is an ill-conceived idea
all together. I should have been more clear about why I though the
DOS MBR was fried, my only evidence being the inability to boot DOS
on hdb1 and knowledge that I had been fiddling with the MBR in the
past. However, I think now that the DOS MBR is intact, but either:
-DOS MBR is _incapable_ of booting an OS on hdb
-DOS MBR can boot hdb, but as written it points to hda
I did not specify that I wanted an MBR that pointed to hdb1, which
I should have done. Also, overwriting the entire boot sector, as
was pointed out, overwrites the partition map. One could overwrite
the portion of the MBR _before_ the map, however. But, I'm guessing
now that the DOS MBR simply can not boot hdb (without a third-party
utility). Anyone disagree?
Could I install a LILO MBR on hdb that'll point to hdb1 and so
boot DOS?

"Network unreachable" implies a problem with the networking. DNS lookups
don't have anything to do with that, they are just a way to figure out the
network address given a domain name.
My guess is that you don't have a default route set.
