Subject: 1280x1024 Resolution
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 06:58:43 GMT

Hi,

I'm trying to get my ViewSonic E771 17inch monitor to do 1280x1024
resolution, but I can't. When I try to do so using XF86Setup the screen
and colors become messed up, and I have to switch back to 1024x768 to
get it to work right again. I think that maybe editing XF86Config by
hand might do it instead of using XF86Setup.. so how can I do it? I
have no idea which line to uncomment. Here's the monitor section of my
XF86Config file:

For console based web browser, i prefer w3m to lynx.

w3m handle table, and frames better than lynx; and can send the image to external
viewer ( like xv ) easily. But w3m cannot read newsgroup.

I'm not sure if this will work, but have you tried making str volatile?
   volatile char str[SZ];

Perhaps turning of any optimisation flag during compilation might work
too.
I think the reason it doesn;t read from the same address over-and-over
again, is because it optimises: scenario would be something like
get data on address X
--get's data on address X
--put's data in memory(cache?)
get data on address X
--same address!!! got it in cache!! That's faster. OK

So turning of optimisation might solve it, or else making the variable
volatile might do it.

Hello,

I would like to write a small script file which would do the following :
count the number of files in a directory,
keep the 10 most recent and delete the others.

Any idea how to do that ?

Thanks

Xavier

Hi Franzi Oktoberfest (strange name),

useing KDE? Want it to be as simple as possible? Use KISDN. Download the
newest version and follow the instructions found on my webpage.

I had the same problem with sending printjobs from a RedHat 6.1 client
to a HPUX 10.20 remote print daemon. I replaced /usr/sbin/lpd with
the one from RedHat 6.0 and all is ok.

Maybe it's a bug in the newer version of lpd. Maybe it's fixed now,
both RedHat 6.0 and 6.1 are outdated.

Couldn't you write a launcher script?

cd /usr/local/mozilla

cd $PATH_NOW

Speaking of Netscpae font problems, here's a sample from my .Xdefaults
file:

Netscape*documentFonts.sizeIncrement: 08

This tells Netscape to use incremental and decremental fonts that are 8%
larger/smaller than the base font. By default, this value is set to 20%.
Make it smaller to get smaller veriations in the font sizes.

Subject: smbfs support in 2.2.16
Date: 10 Jul 2000 09:00:13 GMT

Hi,

I have some unexpected difficulties with the 2.2.16 kernel which I've
instaled lately. Smbount does not work correctly with OS/2 Warp shares
since I started to use the new kernel. It works OK with the 2.2.15 and all
previous versions, though.

Here is the error message I get:

# mount -t smbfs -o username=xxxx,password=xxxx //warp/f /mnt/warp

smbfs: protocols older than NT1 are not suppported mount.smbfs: ioctl
failed, res=-1 Could not umount /mnt/warp: Device or resource busy

I suspect smbfs support was somehow changed in the new kernel, but I was
unable to track any information confirming this. I would be grateful for
any suggestions...

consider chimera. It does not support all modern stuff, but it is very
fast, and free. It does not look nice, but if you have the 3d athena
widgets installed it will not hurt your eyes.
Current version is 2.19a.

Subject: booting from floppy
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 17:28:38 +0800

I recently tested my boot floppy (created at install time of RH 6.1). At the
lilo prompt I typed "rescue" and the initialization messages proceeded. At
one point I was prompted to provide a disk to be loaded into the Ramdisk, so
I left the same boot floppy inside the drive. After it was loaded, these
messages appeared:

Warning: unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: no init found. Try passing init= to kernel

then the system hung.
My boot floppy contained the dev, boot, etc and lost+found directories along
with vmlinuz-???. How could I boot with the rescue method?

Another question: where could I set the keyboard repeat rate in the text
console?

You realize, of course, that it's trivial to modify things so that your
program sees whatever serial number I want it to see. Add to that the
complaints you'll get when people upgrade their hard drives (or replace
a broken hard drive) and it adds up to more trouble than it's worth.
Hard drive typically only last 3 to 5 years.

I have SuSE 6.3 running as a Samba-Fileserver and many problems with the =

network. It has a DLINK-card with a VIA - RHINE chip.

Every hour it writes two or three times this message into the log:

Jul=A0 7 09:34:32 filez kernel: eth0: Something Wicked happened! 001a.

and it increases the TX-error-count shown with ifconfig:

bash-2.03# ifconfig
eth0 =A0=A0 =A0 Link encap:Ethernet=A0 HWaddr 00:50:BA:E3:C1:DF
=A0=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 inet addr:10.0.0.3=A0 Bcast:10.255.255.255=A0 Mask:255=

=A0=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 TX packets:462154 errors:67 dropped:0 overruns:0 carri=

=A0=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 collisions:0

One time a day, the network connection gets down completely with this =

message in the log:

Jul=A0 7 09:41:07 filez kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out, status 0000, PH=
Y =

status 782d, resetting...

and I have to restart the network with /sbin/init.d/network restart to =

get it work again. I have already changed the NIC, but no change.

I really hope, anyone has an idea, because my boss 's starting thinking =

its Linux' fault and changing to NT Server as Fileserver, and I know =

everything will get worse with this solution...

Thanks in advance,
