Hi,
I've just built nn on my Linux box back home. Upon
startup, nn's display of subjects is all messed up.
It almost looks like there are no <CR>s anywhere
OS: Redhat Linux v6.2
NN: nn 6.5.6 #3 (NOV)
Thanks for any help.

I'm trying! I can't get xcdroast to work either. It says it needs
a .conf file, but it won't let me create one! When I try to tell it
the image-partition and mountpoint, it doesn't save the data I enter.
There isn't even a "Save" button on screen, so I can't see how to tell
it what to do. Help!

Xcdroast tends to have bogus/silly error messages. After having problems
with it, I just gave up and merely use cdrecord + mkisofs or cdparanoia
from the command line--easier to tell what's wrong, and faster to execute
besides. Have you made sure that cdrecord (and xcdroast, if you want to
use it) itself is SUID root? If you have a reasonably fast machine, you
don't need to write the ISO image to disk; you can use pipes sort of like
so:
mkisofs -r -J /path/to/data | cdrecord -v speed=Y dev=/dev/sgX -
BTW, if you want to send the same message to more than one NG, CROSSPOST!
Don't post the same message to more than one NG individually, it makes it
much harder to keep track of a discussion. Also keep in mind that if you
crosspost to more than 3 NGs, you're going to Hell :-].

Are there any permissions in any .conf files to set
SAMBA is working fine.
The environment setup is the same too.
Any ideas ?

You didn't say whether you were trying to create an audio cd or
create a cdrom for data (like linux distributors send out.) Let's say
you have some files you want to archive. They aren't enough to fill up
a whole CD and you hope to be able to add more files to the CD later,
until it is filled up. In that case you want to create a multi-session
CD.
Create a directory (in my example it will be /home/CDs, you don't
need to use full path names but I will to eliminate possible confusion.)
Put your data in sub-directories under /home/CDs. (ie
/home/CDs/personal/diary /home/CDs/personal/letters
/home/CDs/code/x.c ...
Create an iso file system using mkisofs:
mkisofs -R -o /home/iso.raw /home/CDs
burn this into a blank CD:
cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=6,0 -eject -multi /home/iso.raw
The dev=6,0 is because my CD-R device is nr 6 on the SCSI bus.
Note that nothing is mounted. The "speed=4" is because my CDR, a Teac 55S
supports 4 times speed when writing. To be really safe you wouldn't use
a speed= argument. If you don't have a SCSI CDR, I've seen postings on
usenet about people use IDE-SCSI emulation to get it to work. Cdrecord may
not recognize the type of your cdr either. The command:
cdrecord -driver=help
lists the supported drivers.
Once cdrecord is done, you can try mounting the cd to see if it worked.
On my system that would be mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom.
You can delete /home/iso.raw and /home/CDs. Later you want to add something
to the CD.
Create a directory, it can be /home/CDs again or /home/X or whatever.
Create a subdirectory WITH A DIFFERENT NAME. i.e. /home/CDs/newstuff.
Put the new stuff under that directory. This time, when you do the
mkisofs it needs additional information from the original CD. You put
the CD in the drive and use the command:
mkisofs -o iso.raw -R -C `cdrecord -msinfo dev=6,0` -M /dev/scd0 /home/CDs
Note that iso.raw is an optional name, the '6' should be changed to
whatever your device nr is for your drive, and /dev/scd0 may not be
where your device is on your system either. Also, I'm assuming you put
everything under directory /home/CDs.
Finally, you record the new data with the cdrecord command:
cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=6,0 -multi iso.raw
If you then mounted the CD on node /cdrom, an ls /cdrom should reveal
something like:
personal
code
newstuff
where personal and code were from the first recording session.
To do audio, you'd get a collection of wav files (wavrec works for this,
be sure to record stereo at 44100 bps) and put them in a directory. Go to
that directory and use a command like:
cdrecord -audio -speed=4 -pad -v dev=6,0 *wav
You can't do multi-session for audio, though some drives (not mine) may
support a nofix option so that you can incrementally add wav files until
you finally 'fix' it.

ctlinnd newgroup MyGroup as the news user. Then edit readers.conf and add
something like:
auth "everybody" {

access "everybody" {

newsgroups: "*"

By default, out of the box, INN 2.3 only allows connections from
localhost.

It really depends upon what you are trying to write (audio, data).
For writing a directory of data files, I do it like so:
nice --18 mkisofs -V TITLE -R /dir/to/write | cdrecord -v speed=1 dev=0,0,0 -
The 'nice' gives mkisofs a high enough priority to prevent cdrecord's buffer from
starving.
The "/dir/to/write" is the path to the directory which you wish to burn.
The "TITLE" is just the disk's volume title (you can safely omit the -V TITLE part).
The speed and dev need to be set according to your system.
I forget off-hand the specifics I use for audio.
You an do a "man cdrecord" for more info and examples.
Also, you could try one of the many gui frontends which do the dirty work for you:
Just try a search on freshmeat.net for "cdrecord frontend"
Personally, I prefer gnometoaster http://gnometoaster.rulez.org/

As far as I remember :
- If some "lost files" are found during filesystem check , i.e some blocks
are registered as belonging to file, but this file is not found, then this
file is created in lost+found directory, so that you can look at it and
decide what to do with it. There is some resemblance between lost+found of
UNIX & 'lost chains' converted to '.chk' files in DOS/Windows.

As I remember, it is very advisable to disable "Probe all LUNs for each
device" for some kernels. This doesn't work correct with SCSI emulation,
causing the very same situation you describe.
One more point :
- Check which modules are loaded : 'lsmod' as root.
- Check the permissions of /dev/sg* & /dev/sr*. If you try to reach those
devices as regular user, you must have appropriate permissions.
- Check if the cdrecord binary is setuid root.

When the system does a periodic filesystem check (fsck) on bootup, it
puts any stray file fragments it find in that directory so the user
can later manually try to make sense of it. It usually is of no use
unless it is some text files which got garbled up. It is akin to the
Windows scandisk program producing '.chk' files.
If you don't want that directory, you can delete it as root but if you
want to recreate it, you need to run the 'mklost+found' command
instead of 'mkdir'.

Sounds right to me. Is the modem internal or external? My USR External modem
has a light labelled 'AA' for AutoAnswer. If your modem has such a light and it
is NOT lit, then the modem has not been told to answer.
Query the modem itself with ATS0? (that's a zero before the question mark).
S-Register 0 is the auto-answer control. If the modem returns 0, then it is not
set to auto-answer calls. If it returns a number other than 0, then the modem
will answer after that many rings. You can set it with ATS0=n where n is the
number of rings you want before it answers.
Also, for an external modem, check the DIP switches. Typically DIP switch 5
must be UP to enable answering. The factory default is DOWN (never answer) with
current USR externals.
Good luck. HTH.

That depends on how you installed them in the first place. If
you're using rpm (the RedHat package manager) just use "rpm -e
[package_name]". If you compiled from source, you can usually do
a "make uninstall" to uninstall a program.

When I telnet into our HP-UX and AIX boxes from Linux, neither the
backspace key or left-arrow key erase the previous character as they do
when I am in a normal bash shell.
I have looked in man telnet and did not see anything there that would
help. I did see a reference to a .telnetrc file, but can not locate
anything of substance regarding it. It is possible the answer lies
there. Can someone point me to a source of information that I could
