I'm running Apache on Red Hat 6.2. Does anybody know how to just show a
directory listing instead of a web page? I've seen it done before but I
don't know how.
Thanks,
Kerry

Very true... One of the big problems I always encountered when trying Red
Hat rpms on SuSE is a lot insisted that needed "libjpeg.so.62", which didn't
exist on my system.

I just created a symlink from libjpeg.so.6 to .62, and these then work.

Does anybody know a good and simple program that can convert postscript

Date: 18 Jul 2000 20:08:49 GMT

I'm tring to learn more about how it works. I downloaded gcc-2.95 and
searched though the files and found 2 called random.c

/gcc-2.95/libiberty/random.c
/gcc-2.95/libio/dbz/random.c

I tried setting the seed to 0 and running each of these and I get
different results from when I make a little program that calls random()
with a seed of 0. Any idea where the code for the random function is
hiding? Thanks for the help.

EFF DVD Update: July 14, 2000
Universal City Studios et al v. 2600 Magazine

EFF Moves to Disqualify Kaplan:
Judge was Time Warner's Lawyer on DVD Issues

On July 14 EFF's defense team filed a motion to disqualify Judge Lewis
Kaplan from presiding over the DeCSS trial after discovery revealed that he
advised Time Warner on DVD matters while in private practice from 1993 -
1996. Judge Kaplan was a partner in the powerhouse NY law firm Paul Weiss
when he counseled Time Warner, a plaintiff in the case, on antitrust issues
related to DVD technology, an issue to be decided in this case.

2600's defense team has also learned that while in private practice, Judge
Kaplan accused its lead litigator, Martin Garbus of professional misconduct
and cautioned a co-worker against taking a position in Garbus' law firm.
Both incidents create a conflict of interest for the Clinton-appointed
federal judge, who has pushed for a speedy trial since the initial court
appearance.

The trial, which will determine the scope of the move studios' control over
DVD player technology under the DMCA, is set to begin Monday, July 17th at
9:30a.m. in federal court (500 Pearl Street) in Manhattan. The New York
Linux Users' Group has received a permit to hold a public demonstration
protesting the DMCA and the movie studios' radical interpretation of the
Act's anti-circumvention provisions outside the court house at 10:30a.m. on
the 17th.

I have made a nifty littel' script using xv to set the root window and
it's called with "-now" everytime I start x (see below)
I found out that I can drag'n drop an image to it, so I placed in my
panel, but then it changes the panel bg and doesn't affect the root
window unit I reboot x. or call it with -now. What should I do?

And I found out I can't drag'n'drop to a symlink. What do you suggest, a

And last but not least: a place all my self-made scripts in /usr/bin,
but I dont think that's the right place for it. Are there any
conventtions on that?

EFF DVD Update: July 17, 2000
Universal City Studios, et al v. 2600 Magazine

DMCA Trial Begins with a Bang

EFF's motion to recuse the judge because he had advised plaintiff Time
Warner on DVD antitrust issues while at the law firm Paul Weiss was denied
without allowing argument at the opening of trial on July 17 in NY federal
court. After refusing to allow the defense team to stay the trial so it
could appeal the disqualification ruling to the Second Circuit Court of
Appeals, Judge Kaplan then ordered the defense team to proceed to trial
immediately.

The movie studios' first witness was Michael Shamos a Carnegie Melon faculty
member who claimed to make and trade a DiVX DVD by using the DeCSS software.
On cross-examination by EFF's defense team, Shamos testified that it took 20
hours over a 4-day period to conduct the experiment including 10 hours
devoted solely to the synchronization of the film's audio and video.
Shamos, who admitted to being paid $30,000 by MPAA for his participation in
this case, stated the law firm Proskaur & Rose designed the test and
provided him with detailed instructions on precisely what to do. The
"technology expert" was also forced to disclose that an assistant Eric Burns
conducted most of the experiment and that Shamos has no knowledge of a
single incident of illegal copying attributable to DeCSS.

Shamos also testified that the studios' lawyers asked him to remove
references to the First Amendment and the NY Times (who linked to the
software) in early drafts of his court declaration because it would "cloud
the case with First Amendment issues." While the courtroom was packed with
journalists and concerned Netizens alike, dozens of protesters demonstrated
against the studios' broad interpretation of the DMCA outside the courthouse
during the trial.

Tuesday's testimony is expected to include EFF's technology expert Frank
Andrew Stevenson the Norwegian cryptographer who first analyzed the CSS
algorithm and published his results.

In httpd.conf around line 360, I see:
#
# DirectoryIndex: Name of the file or files to use as a pre-written HTML
# directory index. Separate multiple entries with spaces.
DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm

So any directory that has an index.html or index.htm will display that
page. If a file by those names doesn't exist, a directory listing will
be displayed. If you have the line
IndexOptions FancyIndexing
included, the index will look prettier and have icons; if not, it won't.

Too bad, 'cause that'd be the easiest way. How is the user transferring
these files in? FTP, shell commands, or upload through a Web interface?
If the user is uploading files through a PHP script or something
similar, you can just have the script call the filter... check the PHP
manual and/or http://php.net/ for information on how exactly to do this.

If this is through the shell, I suppose you could set PROMPT_COMMAND to
run a variant of the find/exec below, though you'd have to lock up his
.bashrc. Or make ~/.bash_logout non-modifiable by the user, and run the
filter when he logs out...?

Really, I think a cron job would be your best bet. Set it to execute
every 10 or 15 minutes, and have it only operate on files that are newer
than 10-15 minutes. Set MAILTO= to "" so the mail logs don't fill up,
like so:
MAILTO=""
0,15,30,45 * * * * find /path/to/dir -mmin -15 -exec /path/to/filter.sh
{} \;

See the Lilo User's Guide which comes as part of the distribution.
It should be in /usr/doc or in the archive created from the tar file
of the version you installed. 'L' may indicate some sort of
geometry mismatch.

0x00 "Internal error". This code is generated by the sector read
routine of the LILO boot loader whenever an internal inconsistency is
detected. This might be caused by corrupt files. Try re-building the map
file. Another possible cause for this error are attempts to access
cylinders beyond 1024 while using the LINEAR option. See section "BIOS
restrictions" for more details and for how to solve the problem.

That's direct from the LILO documentation. I assume the partition table
is correct and the BIOS and the Linux kernel agree on the drive
geometry? LILO can work with most "drive overlay" programs, but there
may be a couple of them that it can't handle--remove the drive overlay
if possible; Linux doesn't need it. The BIOS translation should be set
to LBA if possible; Linux won't care but LILO will be happier. Also
check the jumpers on the drive and make sure they're set to "master".

Can you boot the system from a boot floppy, and does everything look OK
then?

Check if ps2epsi is installed on your machine. It can be used to convert
post script into a special form of encapsulated post script (though not sure
how different eps and epsi are).

How would that solve his desire to listen to a source that is only asp?

This may not be a direct answer to your questions, but why not download the
kernel from ftp://ftp.kernel.org (I believe) and compile it yourself?
Sooner or later you will have tolearn hwo to compile the kernel yourself,
so why not now? You certainly should read carefully through the appropriate
HOWTO's from http://www.linuxdoc.org

While recompiling the kernel for the first time might seem scary, it's not
that difficult if you're careful.
