Doing defrag in windows does not do anything to lilo or linux file
systems, unless there are special circumstances we don't know about.
If this is not fixed then the problem will turn up again some time later.

One posibility is that the windows file system is larger than the
partition where it is located. Once created the size of a vfat file
system is taken from the file system itself, not from the partition table,
even if you rerun the format command to create a new vfat file system.
The windows system will then be more than happy to trample on the contens
on the next partition. Nothing appears to happen as long as the end of
the vfat file system remains unallocated, but defrag will for sure put
temporary files at the end of the file system.

The FIPS program is able to detect this condition, and in fact I've seen
some systems with pre-installed windows that had this exact problem and
FIPS detected this when trying to split the partition.

Another posibility is that if you copy the vmlinuz and the other /boot
components to a vfat file system, then if defrag moves around with these
files the lilo will no longer work. In this case you should always have
a copy of loadlin on the vfat file system just in case, and also make
the components from the /boot directory 'system' and 'hidden' so defrag
won't move them.

Is it???

On most systems I've seen, if you read from the no-rewind tape unit until
EOF then the tape will be in position to read the next tape file. If you
close the no-rewind tape unit before EOF it will forward space until the
next tape mark and be positioned at the beginning of the next tape file.

Should be no problem. Ive never set up ICS, but all you have to do is
setting the default gateway on your linux box to the windoze boxs IP
address and surf. No other programs are necessary (except you want to
use a proxy or something).

Hi Folks,

By trying to edit the behaviour of my linux box's reaction to incorrect
passwords, I have corrupted my /etc/login file and therefore can not
login using telnet.

Can anyone please send a version of their /etc/login file to me so that
I can login with telnet. The linux version I am running is 2.0.29.

Thankyou very much for your help.

Hi,
I am having problems with non-English characters display in xterm.
First I have to say that all other applications that I care about
work: emacs, netscape, lyx and even the vi I'm usign now and pine
inside an xterm - mybe this points to bash as the problem?

The language I'm interested into is Swedish, whose characters are
in the iso-latin-8859-1 set.

Characters on the console also do not work, but at the login prompt
do.

Thanks for any help,

Subject: FAT16/FAT32 Partition not visible (StarOffice/JBuilder)

On my machine I have WIN98/WinNT/Linux and therefore FAT16/32, NTFS and
ext2 partitions. Normaly under linux (only of course!!) I can read all
the partitions and I have access to all the files with Midnight
Commander, kfm, terminal and all the other programs. But with
StarOffice 5.1 and Borlands JavaBuilder I can only see the files of the
ext2 and NTFS partitions, but not of the FAT16/FAT32 partitions (where I
normaly store my data because it is the only partition which is readable
by all three operating systems).

Who knows this problem ?

Who knows a solution to this problem ?

No. If you want them their shell to log their commands, change their
shell to one that does! (in bash, reading their history file will do
fine ...). This won't stop them using another shell. You might
also consider modifying the system() and exec() calls in libc.

No it doesn't :-). All it provides are header files and examples for
using the Windows libraries on Windows. It does not in any way
describe the file format or how to decode/encode the files.

Hi,

why the hell is Red Hat (5.x - 6.2) refusing my disk's partition table? I am
definitly unable to install Red Hat in text mode, in expert mode, in every
mode I try. When it comes to partitioning Red Hat complains about the
partition table (error: no free resources). I admit, the partition table is
rather complicated, with OS/2 bootmanager first (activated), two extra
primary partitions for the bunch of Windows/DOS versions and an extended one
for data and playing around with e.g. linux. Slackware, SuSE, Debian ... no
problem. Each of these distributions recognizes the partition table and
easily installs bootable through OS/2 bootmanager/lilo. Why does Red Hat
not?

If you want to boot to the command line one time only then.... at the Lilo

rpm -qf /path/to/file tells you what rpm installed the file.

If it doesn't work because the file isn't there, try fooling it
