Some of space in ext2 (usually 5%) is reserved for root use.
When your usage will be below 3731381 (=0.95*3927769) you get space for

Bah. Are you trolling or something?

While I disagree with any kind of hype to say that it's not an
"acceptable desktop operating system" just isn't true.

If it were true how would I manage to run my company with it? In your
infinite wisdom you might like to enlighten me on what I'm missing out

You sound very desparate for help so I'll put in my 2 cents worth --btw,
already downed 4 brews ;-)
First, a quick lesson on how your linux system boots.... When your machine
boots into linux, system checks are made, hardware configured, blah, blah,
blah. But most important, the system looks for the file /etc/inittab. This
is a very important file because it starts all your services and daemons
(including X). If this file is not present, the system won't boot. End of
lesson (I hope you now realize how important this file is).

>From what I've read so far, I'm going to go through the process of
elimination.
1. You said you used to be able to boot into X, but then one day it didn't.
--This tells me that /etc/inittab file was somehow modified.
2. You say you modified the /etc/inittab line to id:5:initdefault: so
that it boots to runlevel 5 but you still get a terminal log in screen.
-- This tells me that /etc/inittab file has something missing
3. You say that when you login, and you type startx that all is well.
-- This tells me that /etc/inittab file may have a line missing.

Yes, the other people gave you the correct advice about the the line in
/etc/inittab that reads...
id:5:initdefault
to boot into runlevel 5.
Make sure the very last line of /etc/inittab file looks like this...
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

If this don't work, you have a corrupt system and should reinstall.
cul8er, Jeff

P.S. why on earth did you change your video driver, when it was already
working??? Most ATI boards use the Mach64 chipset , not SVGA

I know have the keys on thekeyboard working directly, so I don't need
any other key. But I do get alt + d = in the shell, which I would like to
have as word-delete, which I think is the default for the readline library
used by bash. Any hint on how to have it back?

On Solaris, one can always specify in /etc/system to limit a user's processes to a
maxnumber by using statement such as:
set maxuprc=30.

How to do likewise in Linux Redhat 6.2 ?

Also, how does one make sure that all YP client's timestamp is identical as their yp

You can use 'gunzip' then 'tar' commands. Read the 'man' pages on each
before using. Most of time the files are packed with a directory
stucture, It just depends on who packed them.

Note: There is an option for the 'tar' command that will unzip the file
first so you wont have to use the 'gunzip'.

What errors are you getting?

My guess is that you aren't doing the install step as root.

configure usually is set up to want to install to /usr/local (which I prefer)
or /usr. You need to be root to write to these areas. You can just be
yourself up to the "make install" step. Then su (or sudo, if installed) to
root, and finish the installation.

Another possibility is you don't have your build environment set up right
(missing headers or compilers). Without seeing the errors you are getting I
couldn't guess though.

Chris

I am running RH6.2, the 2.4.0-test4 compiled here without any issues. I did
compile in support for LVM, first
with the -test2 release, and again with -test4. What a wonderful addition to our
world. I did the process exactly as David has described, and there was no
unpleasantness. Go for it!

RH does it dynamically in /etc/rc.d/rc.local (I believe it's identical in
Mandrake). I played around with the script, changed to a different
penguin, and later eliminated it entirely. Going retro:-) y'see, to just

I have the same exact modem in my desktop computer and I had the modem
working in about 5 minutes. The manal that comes with the modem
specifically tells you the commands needed to get the modem working.
Goto the Linux section and execute the commands it tells you. Then (I
haven't used RH in a while but..) you need to use linuxconf in X windows
to configure your dialup connection. If you do however have Kppp use
that as that is what I use with Suse. Select "new" and run through the
different tabs at the top of the window inputting the relevant
information.

Heh, that must rank as the most inefficient gateway solution ever!
Go tell it to the LOAF guys !

I don't think squid took more than a minute to install and setup here
initially. IIRC all you need to alter is the "http access allow all" line
in squid.conf for basic use.

Were you expecting it to include dial-on-demand that the windows ones
