yuck. Sounds horribly like you didn't compile ext2 fs into your kernel.
Basically it can't find and or read /boot

You need to set the default route to the IP address of the Pipeline and add
your ISP's DNS servers to your DNS search list. If you are using RedHat you
can use linuxconfig and set the DNS under name server specifacations and you
default route under Sets Default.

Subject: Recompiling the kernel for a 386 machine
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 15:26:58 GMT

Hi
I installed Redhat 6.1 on a Pentium 166 machine and I moved the hard
drive to a machine that has a NexGen "586" chip in it. The Linux won't
run on it.
I got kernel panic. I forget the exact message, but it gave me the
impression that the Linux Redhat 6.1 would run, if I recompiled the
kernel for a 386 type machine.
I am not sure what has to be done. Do I just have to recompile the
kernel and copy the kernel into the /boot directory of the NexGen
machine or do I have to recompile all the modules also
and copy them in to the appropriate directories ?
Somewhere I heard that the way Redhat installs a system, is that it
detects the processor and has copys of different kernels on the cd that
are optimized for that processor which
it installs in the particular system. Is that true. If so then it wold
make sense that the Linux version that was installed on my Pentium 166
would not work on a machine with a 386 like chip.

                                                Thanks

                                                        Mike

You need to specify DNS adresses - get 'em from your ISP. You may also need
to include a gateway address. Your ISP can tell you that also.

I am running Windows Millennium Edition.

When I tried to install Mandrake 7.1 I got the message :-
This program runs in MS-DOS mode (real mode) which this version of Windows
does not support. You can attempt to run this program in MS-DOS windows as
follows:-
Right-click the icon for the program, click Properties, click OK, and then
click YES in the dialog that appears

I tried this but got another message saying that there was some kind of

Hi All,
I put "Pygmy" Linux on a 4mb 486 Compaq laptop.
It comes on maybe 7 floppys. So far I have not got the
X windows function to work. On laptops I understand that
it could be a more difficult problem because of their internal
graphics chip. It does, so far, work well in the Bash shell.
 It is available at http://pygmy.penguin.cz

Install a NTP (Network Time Protocol) deamon. It updates/corrects your

Subject: Newbie: Upgrading RPM
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 15:27:26 GMT

Hi,
I am relatively new to Linux and need help upgrading RPM on Red Hat 6.1
I currently have 3.0.4 and want to upgrade because I get a message that
I can't install rpm's with major version numbers over 3. So, I guess I
can't use RPM itself to upgrade to RPM 4.0, so I downloaded the tar.gz
verison. When I try to install these I get a new message every time
about some other library, tool I need - e.g., shared libraries,
something called db3, which in turn asks me for 5 other things I
need, a couple other tools....
Granted, I'm new to Linux, but this seems ridiculously complicated just
to upgrade from 3 to 4. Am I missing something here?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Sebatien

It's really bizarre that Xconfigurator does this to your inittab!!
I would not use it anymore

What does du / show? (If it's a lot, go in steps: du -bks /* shows

It's a false alarm. What's happened here is that when installing Linux
you installed LILO to the master boot record of your hard disc (which is
fine, and what you want to do). Your BIOS, in its stupidity, has
detected this as a boot-sector virus.

Switch off virus warnings in your BIOS.

Hello all,

I work for a small company of approx 70 employees, we plan to grow to about

What kind of linux solutions are there for email? We want to host our own

I checked and for Microsoft Exchange it would cost us about 10000$ in
licenses and hardware. What are some Linux solutions that would work with
our small company?

Thanks for your help.

I know that there were problems with the 2.2.15 kernel. Try moving to
the latest 2.2.17 and see what happens. It seems to be rock stable in
almost any situation. I've been using it for a dual PPro for as long as
it has been availble. Also, you might want to check for the latest BIOS
update for your board. That may solve some problems too.

What I usually do is synchronize my system clock with a local time
server. There are time servers such as time.nist.gov, but I would advise
against using that, as it's one of the big ones and many many machines
much more important than ours are using it to keep the right time. If you
know of a local machine on your network that's got the correct time, you
can run (as root): "rdate -s <server_name>". Hope that helps...

My problem is that directories get left behind. I am having a problem

Any ideas? I have not found any magical combination of commands that

I'm not an advanced user but I think a basic machine such as a standard
pentium with decent memory would do the job. You would need to run
sendmail/exim/equivalent and a pop3 daemon such as GnuPop3d. Then just set
up each user and get DNS pointed to your IP of the server and away you go.
