Subject: Mount and umount hanging in D state

Hello,

I am having a neat new problem with a machine that I just upgraded to
RedHat 6.1.

I installed a new 60 gig drive, and upgraded from RedHat 5.2 to 6.1.
Also I upgraded the kernel to 2.2.14-05 in order to get support for
the large drive. Partitioning and mkfsing went well.

However, when I tried to mount the partitions after mkfs, the mount
command hung in D state.

I rebooted the system eventually and the new partitions needed an fsck,
and then mounted up just fine.

In the course of subsequent events I tried to umount one of the new
partitions. This also hung in D state. So I tried to umount a
partition on the old 6 gig drive that I am still using from before.
It also hung in D state.

These are both IDE drives, and I happen to have a SCSI controller and
a Jaz drive in the machine, so I stuck in a Jaz and tried to mount it
up. This also stuck in D state.

So I am perplexed. I can only mount stuff up at boot time. Does
anyone have a clue for me? I've been hunting Deja for a week and not
turning up any clues.

Well you deserve them since you are quite clearly clueless.

Ah. that's very nice Bruce, don't just piss off the Linux people, but
the Mac people as well! Now just let's sit down and watch the flames,
because we'll be stuck with this thread for a long time now :-)

I need to create a self-extracting zip file to give to Win32
users. I know it's long odds, but does anybody know of a way
to do this under Linux? The info-zip "zip" program doesn't do
this -- though I think it may be able to manipulate files within
an existing self-extracting zip archive...

It is included the "pci-utils-devel" package.

Look in the Changes file...you may need some updated utilities. For
instance, if you use dialup internet, you will need to get ppp-2.4
beta, whereas most distributions come with various versions of 2.3.

If you only care about the text, search freshmeat for "antiword".
Other ways:

1. Use VMWare to run a copy of Windows/Office under Linux.

2. Set up a spare machine with Windows/Office and use VNC to connect
to it from Linux.

I use an ancient copy of Wabi to run Win3 under Linux. Then I can use
MS-WordView. Unfortunately, Wabi (and Win3) are no longer supported.

Yes, ask people to stop sending you those file formats. Ask for rtf
or html or even postscript.

Subject: monitor sync / startx problem
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 11:43:00 -0700

Yesterday, my x86 Linux box booted but failed to go to the GUI login
screen (with the Red Hat logo) as it has normally done since I installed
Red Hat 6.2 a couple of months ago.

The machine runs through the normal text-response startup script, but
when it gets to the point where it switches into GUI mode the monitor
switches to a different resolution mode, stays black for a split-second,
and then switches again into the same mode. (I know it is the same
because this monitor flashes the sweep and refresh rates on the screen
when it changes modes.) It does this repeatedly for several minutes
without success. Eventually it reverts to a text interface and I can
log in fine there.

When I try to run startx from the prompt, I get the same behavior, but
only one repetition.

My first theory was a hardware problem with the monitor, but I can boot
other machines into graphics mode with the same monitor.

Within startx's output, I find that it tries to set the default font
path to True Type, but that directory does not exist, so it says:

FontPath set to "unix/:-1"

Then, much later, it says:

_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

and ends.

What does a path of "unix/:-1" mean? This does not correspond to
anything in my tree, and I am not familiar with the ":-1" in the context
of a path (although it reminds me of the X display notation).

I have looked at the startx output on another machine, which boots into
GUI mode successfully with the same monitor, and it also tries to use
True Type and then reverts to:

FontPath set to "unix/:-1"

but on this machine that works OK.

I have also looked at /var/log/messages for messages from gdm, and I
find:

Jul 19 06:09:19 lab_1_linux xfs: xfs startup succeeded
Jul 19 06:09:19 lab_1_linux xfs: Fatal font server error:
Jul 19 06:09:19 lab_1_linux xfs: Cannot establish any listening sockets
Jul 19 06:09:19 lab_1_linux linuxconf: Linuxconf final setup
Jul 19 06:09:20 lab_1_linux rc: Starting linuxconf succeeded
Jul 19 06:09:21 lab_1_linux gdm[751]: gdm_auth_secure_display: Error
getting hentry for lab_1_linux
Jul 19 06:09:26 lab_1_linux gdm[762]:
gdm_slave_windows_kill_ioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
[This last two entries repeat many times.)

Any ideas on what could have caused this problem and how to fix it?

Thanks for your help.

- Robert

Make a small partition (say 20 megs) near the start of the disk and call it
"/boot"

Put the kernel image System.map and all that stuff on it. Edit your
"/etc/lilo.conf" to reflect the change and run lilo

Remember that ***everything*** required to boot the system must be entirely
located below cyl 1024.

You'll probably need to reinstall due to the partitioning change...

As a rule it's a good idea to have a "/boot" partition anyway since it isolates
all the boot stuff from everything else...
