I think, most people here know SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrical
Intelligence). Well, now there is STI (Search for Terrestrical
Intelligence).
I don't know, if they have any chance to succeed...
They're using the same methods as SETI, only applied to
mother earth, to verify, that it's working on a species we're
calling "intelligent" :-)

No, they say you must use IE to set yourself up. After that you can use
Netscape they say. So the problem for a linux user would be to set
yourself up. I tried but they refused to recognize me (maybe because
they have no service in Canada, or maybe because I do not have IE).
So I would suspect that youcould use IE to get yourself and account, and
then use Linux thereafter.

Actually, what it says is:
"Freewwweb is proud to announce that we have an agreement with Juno to
continue providing you with completely free Internet access and free
e-mail-you can even continue using your Freewwweb e-mail address! All
you have to do is download a copy of Juno's free software and use it to
create a free Juno account. "

Doesn't sound to me they'll keep the old accounts around for long.

I have DSL at home and have had luck with IP Masquerade, which is basically a
config script for IPchains. below is the link. It took me a while to get two
nics going, but after that it was smooth sailing. You just need to read the
howto carefully. It is invisible proxy, too:

I don't know if this applies in your situation, but if your disk is full,
xfs will run as root, but not as an unprivileged user.

I followed the HOWTO step by step and I dual boot Linux and Win2k with the
Win2k boot manager. I installed Mandrake 7.0 and during the install I had it
put LILO in the / partition (/dev/hdb2 in my case) which is where I
extracted it using the dd command as you have and modified boot.ini as you
have.

Subject: [Samba] Shared dirs problem
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 13:13:20 +0200
Hi all.
We're having some strange problems with our samba server. It's running
on an Alphaserver 1200 with Red Hat Linux 6.1, kernel 2.2.13 and samba
2.0.7-4.
The troubles we have are with some shared files. In a Windows 95/98
system we try to read or write some files to the shared folder but the
program hangs (the Windoze one, not Linux's of course). The only thing
that happens on the server side is the great amount of log info that is
generated. It can be seen a lot of such messages:
[2000/07/20 11:58:04, 3] smbd/oplock.c: request_oplock_break (1140)
request_oplock_break: sending a oplock break message to pid (8328) on
port 1494 for dev = 802, inode = 345447, tv_sec = 3976c2f2, tv_usec =
875f7
The funny thing about this is that happens only with a few files, and
are always the same ones. We've been looking for docs, faqs, everything,
but we've not yet discovered what is happening.
I hope someone can help us. Thank you in advance.

I just upgraded last night to the current Gnome (1.2.4) and Sawfish
won't work anymore. I had just upgraded to the latest Sawfish a
couple of days ago, replacing Sawmill on my Linux Madrake 7.1
install and it worked fine until I upgraded Gnome last night. I
tried removing it and reinstalling it, but it won't start. I get
"can't open Sawfish" errors. It won't work if I try to use Sawfish
without Gnome any more either. :(
I even tried compiling the src RPM, but it says:
configure: error: You need rep-gtk version 0.13+
The thing is that I have version 0.13a-1mdk already. I don't know
why it thinks my version is older than that. I'm not sure it would
make much difference anyways. I downloaded the latest mandrake
build of Sawfish (yes there's been another one in the past week) and
it doesn't work for me either.
When I upgraded Gnome, I used the Helix auto-install routine, if
that matters any. Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong or
something to try to get it to work again? Thanks. (I'm using IceWM
right now in Gnome, which still works and so does Englightenment).
Thanks,
Gordon

this is a fonts issue.
for some reason the metacharacter 'unix/:-1' fails to
resolve [i never could figure out *why* but i *did* manage
to trace the path of the metacharacter, for what it's
worth...] - in the /etc directory [or X11 directory, for
that matter] there *may* [or may not] be a standard
XF86Config file...what you want to do is simply get the
fontpath section and stick it into the place where the
metacharacter is, remembering to get rid of the
metacharacter as you go...this may fix yoru problem. [i've
spent about four days battling with this myself...well, more
like two months...]
if you don't have a default XF86Config then you *may* want
to try re-installing x from your installation cd [it may
still fail, but at least you'll get the XF86Config
file...which is really what you're after.]

yes, you could let the script do whatever it does. I keep old kernels

Subject: problem with Gnome panel
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 22:16:56 GMT
Running Red Hat 6.0 with X, Enlightenment and Gnome from the RH6.0 CD.
After trying to add a drawer to the Gnome panel, something died (there
was a lot running, and I don't know which process crashed), and I had
to use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit X. When I restarted X, the Gnome
panel appeared with a standard application window's border and title
bar (not sure about the terminology - the one with the iconize,
maximize and close button on the right side and a menu button on the
left with Close and Anihilate as the first two entries).
I couldn't figure out how to fix this, so I deleted all X and Gnome
configuration files and directories (only ~/.gnome-desktop and its
contents remained) and restarted X. This seems to have fixed the
problem, but I got to waste time tweaking my Gnome and Enlightenment
settings.
Anyone know what happened, and if so either how to prevent recurrence
or how to fix things without having X rebuild my configuration almost
from scratch?
Thanks.

on the ethernet. Any body have solution to that?
Also I find out a very very strange behavior. If I first dial with my modem
and connect to the internet, then I can connect to licq. After that, even
if I remove my modem connection, the licq still WORKS!!! But if I don't
dial at all, it doesn't work... saying something like can't open socket or
something... my guess is dialing with the modem assined me a real socket or
whatever it's call, so the licq is connect, after that I disconnect from
the modem and somehow that doesn't take about the socket connection for
icq... so I can still use ethernet as connection while using the
"ghost-connection" I've had for the socket that licq want... Any insight? I
am a newbie, so don't scold me if I use the wrong terms...

ps. my icq works well in windows98 without the need to connect then
disconnect my dialing connection to get the icq connection. But I don't

I had the same problem. When I installed LILO to my Master Boot Record, the
same thing happened to me. I never could fix it. I used a little Dos based
program on a Boot disk and restored my MBR to boot windows. Now I dont
trust LILO anymore and just use a floppy to load Linux.
But you might want to load linux and try rewriting your MBR. (log in as
root and run klilo or if your using X windows press Alt+F2 and type klilo)
Good Luck

If the connection comes back up it shouldn't be the ISP I have
disabled all power management on Bios to get rid of this (most of the
time). I've one machine that takes 6 or 7 tries to get FTP access.
If you have the time to play most Bioses have a wake on lan or wake on
IRQ. try thse (matched to your NIC card of course)

also KDE ships with an ico editor (atleast in Slackware7+) that should

I was wondering the same thing... haha I had to double check and make
sure it was not April 1 or something... :-)

preferences).
