I appreciate the reply Mark
I'll dig on that. I already fixed the group file manually, it appears the
blasted Red hat 'userconf' thing truncated and inserted stuff where it
shouldn't have. As far as shadow and passwd goes, that's going to be fun.

On both cdrom and floppy, my mount hangs. I can play audio cd's and format
disks, yet I cannot use the mount command to get at them. Of course, hard
drives are mounted fine. I'm running RH 6.0, I've tried various kernel
compilations, including these prepackaged RH ones :
vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
vmlinuz-2.2.5-15

I upgraded my mount to mount-2.10f-1
I tried changing the way the devices are internally, moving my cdrom to
primary slave IDE (where another hd sits and works) as well as switching the
cable. It seems to be a definite software issue.

Any insight as to what action to take is greatly appreciated.. I've ran out of
ideas.

Thanks,

Because of chains of forwarding nameservers i can't resolve this

this server & correct this problem I'm looking for a tool like
traceroute, but for dns-entries!

Anyone suggestions?

Hi all

 I've a problem with a 3C509 Ethernet Card.
I've a little network of 2 PCs one under w98 and the other under Linux
Redhat 6.1
connected througth a Hub.

The problem is that my network card seem to be unable to exchange data.
I've already
have got a pb with this card under this linux dsitribution with redhat 5.2.
I have reinstall
completely the distribution and the pb reapear now :((
All seem to be configurated correctly :

 The netmask is 255.255.255.0
The W98 pc has the 192.168.0.2 Ip Adress ans Linux as the 192.168.0.1

My network is recognise by my Linux kernel.

But when I try to ping one machine from the other then the ping fail !!
From the W98 I look for with arp -a to see if it was able to take the
hardware
adress of the card and the hardware address is here ! But the arp -a command
under linux
return me : incomplete adress for the IP requested !
I don't understand why and what to do !!! ANyone has any ideas ??

 Very thanks to you !

oddly...no, it's not.
that was my reasoning at first as well, but i turned on the
font server and it *still* crashed and then i turned it off
and it continued to do so - technically, the font server is
only used if you want any other machine to access x from
your machine itself...

what it looks like to me [and don't quote me on this,
because i'm not sure] is that the automated programs for
building x configurations [XConfigurator, setup, linuxconf,
etc...] are meant to build the 'unix:-\' metacharacter as a
way of pointing to the fonts in the directory that houses
them [i forget where...] and all of the automated services
*don't* which is why you get the font crash...i don't know
if this is a peculiarity of mandrake 7.02 and it's
configuration tools or not...

either way, it's simple enough to just yank the lines from
the standard XF86Config file and dump them into your custom
set-up...*shrug*

I have been using Linux for a short time and am very pleased with it. I
work with IBM mainframes and at times have to dial into work remotely to

easiest to set up for 3270 emulation. Any thoughts or suggestions would

From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

My current setup, which I am quite content with for discussion groups,
is GNUS in XEmacs 21.1.10 and leafnode. I run XEmacs on my laptop,
and Leafnode on another computer that is also a router for my DSL
connection.

What I would like to do is monitor binary groups served up by my ISP
(Bell Atlantic) with a different news reader so that I don't go
sucking down all the messages in groups I look at. Leafnode doese not
have enough disk space available to it for all the spool files! ;-)

So the news reader I use will directly log on to the BA news server
the same way leafnode does, but it will have a seperate file for
keeping track of the groups I subscribe too and which messages I have
already seen.

If someone knows a way I can have GNUS keep track of a seperate news
server, I would be happy to use it. There should be a way to switch
between leafnode and whatever BA uses and maintain a seperate
server-x.eld file for that server.

I don't want to cache binaries locally.

BTW, I do *not* know elisp :-(. But if there is a section in the GNUS
info file I should pay particular attention too or if someone has a
emaxical incantation to allow seperate servers to be used by one user
with seperate server-x.eld files, I would love to have them.

Thanks.

If I appear totaly incoherant it is because coffee is really not good
at keeping the brain working right. It is good at keeping you from
getting any damn sleep if you drink it too late in the day. Damn I'm
tired! Why can't I fall asleep? Should I start setting X-No-Archive:
yes in my headers?

Gnus allows you to read from many different news servers. From the
*Groups* buffer, use B to browse this new server, and subscribe to the
desired groups.

It is quite possible to use several news servers from one instance of
Gnus, and you can explicitly tell the Agent which news servers should
be covered by the Agent and which should not be covered.

Try typing `B' in the Group buffer, then follow the prompts. You can
go back to the new server by typing `^' in the Group buffer, then
hitting `RET' on the right server. Use `u' to subscribe to the groups
you like.

If you don't add the new server to the agent, it will not be covered
by the agent. That's what you want, right?

Do you have in your /etc/modules.conf alias etho,eth1
and for ISA nics you have a "options" line after each alias.
options being your port and irq for each nic.

x3270 opens a telnet connection to an IBM host in an X window. The
window created by x3270 can use its own font for displaying charac
ters, so it is a fairly accurate representation of an IBM 3278 or

Like it says basically: StarOffice 5.1 doesn't recognize my vfat
partition.
The /etc/fstab line says: /dev/hda2 /mnt/DOS_hda2 vfat
user,exec,conv=auto 0 0

StarOffice is the only program that has problems with this. It's not a
big problem, just a minor nuisance; the vfat partition houses a
minimalist win95 installation that caters for some games and the file
transfer software for a parallel port scanner and a digital camera: I
can simply copy the files needed to my ext2fs partition. It is kinda
funky though...

I run Mandrake 7 with GNOME.

Someone in this group suggested I should mount with
mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /mnt/DOS_hda2 -o umask=002,uid=0,gid=users
but that doesn't seem to work.

hope!!) and in addition trying to teach myself HTML and Visual Basic 6,
I've been looking into Linux so I can really learn about what an operating
system is all about and take a break from Windows. I was wondering which
would be the best Linux distribution for someone like myself who is
looking to use it both as a WIN98 replacement for my desktop needs and as
a way to really learn about an operating system? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. I'm presently reading "Running Linux" but after a
few chapters realized it's time to "do" as I'm reading. I've also ordered
a beginning Unix book figuring it might fill in some gaps. Thanks in
advance. BTW, I'm familiar with computers as an enduser, but not really
versed in the real "nitty-gritty" of software and hardware. However I'm
very eager to learn as much as I can. Computers have always been
interesting to me, but I've never really gotten into the workings "under
the hood" and I'd really like to now. Thanks in advance. ERH

I made a mistake editing rc.inet2, and the system wouldn't boot. I used the
bootdisk / rootdisk combination to access the system, but found that I
couldn't use either vi or ed on the hard disk to edit the file. For vi,
there was a message saying, "can't find libtermcap.so.2". So I gave up
trying to edit the file, and finally succeeded in running ed after booting
from the installation cd-rom. Vi still wouldn't work after booting from the
cd.

Why couldn't I use vi (and many other commands), even after I mounted the
hard disk after booting from both the ramdisk and the cd-rom?

Does this have to do with starting init from the floppy, and if so,
how would I go about doing that?

You can do this with tin. You just use
tin -g <news.server.com>
(replacing that with your actual newsserver of course.)
