Sounds like who ever made your rescue floppy or CD forgot a
librairy for /lib! The dynamic librairy VI is screaming about is
called
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Jul 22 1999
/lib/libtermcap.so.2 -> libtermcap.so.2.0.8
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11493 Apr 29 1996
/lib/libtermcap.so.2.0.8
If your rescue disks aint got this! you aint got VI! Also in
/etc make sure you have a /etc/termcap file with your linux termcap
info (since vi (actually elvis) will be looking for it.

Hi folks,
Sorry this is long, but I have a problem that I can't seem to get sorted
out.
I'm using an older machine of mine to run IP Masq. for my cable modem
connection. This machine is replacing a PS1 that was doing IP Masq. for 2
years. I mention that because the replacement system is using all the same
hardware (as far as NICs, Hub, cables), so I'm trying to rule the hardware
out. Said replacement machine is my roommates hand-me down, and it has been
working fine prior to this.
Anyway, both cards are 3c509B-TPOs. eth0 has I/O of 0x300 and IRQ of 15 and
eth1 has I/O of 0x210 and IRQ of 9. Both devices show up in
/proc/interrupts, and ifconfig reports these settings as well, so I'm pretty
confident that it's not a resource issue.
eth0 is working great, gets DHCP address from provider, can ping the world,
we're looking good.
eth1, however, is another story. I can bring the interface up using
ifconfig.
Specifically: ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
but when I try to ping, nothing. Then I tried a traceroute just to see what
that would give me. I received !H, which the man page says is a host
unreachable message. So then I checked the arp table, and saw that it is
not able to successfully arp for the other host (which was a pc with IP
192.168.1.2 connected to a hub with the linux box, and became a pc connected
directly to the linux box via cross-over cable for debugging purposes). I
even manually entered the arp entry, and it didn't help.
The route entry looks OK, specifically:
Dest GW NM Flags Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U eth1
One thing that I did notice was that the TX packets (as reported by
ifconfig) are increasing when I do pings, but the eth1 value in
/proc/interrupts never increases higher than 1. The eth0 vaule increases
with every packet I send/receive on that interface. I took eth1 out of the
system and checked /proc/interrupts to make sure there was no other device
was trying to use IRQ 9, and that checked out OK.
Any ideas? I'm stumped, and have run out of things to try.
Thanks,
Brian

Provided you didn't delete it, your .config and .config.old files should
still be in /usr/src/linux/ (I make backup copies of those -just copies in
/usr/src/ (and often use "make mrproper" to clean things out ... if they
get wiped out, I just copy them back).
(in fact, if I forget what my settings are, I just do a make config or
make menuconfig so I can see them ... or look through the .config file in
a text viewer, but that only shows variable settings ... make config gives
me access to the help file that explains each setting ... then I simply
don't do anything more - just take a look at the settings)
When you configure (with those available) the default settings listed
should be your current configuration (it may be easier to use
make menuconfig
instead of make config)

it does happen under Linux how can I verify this?

I've compiled a 2.4.0-test4 kernel, done 'make modules' and 'make
modules_install'. When I run update-modules depmod reports unresolved
symbols in *all* the modules. What am I missing?

So to you an acceptable OS is one that tries to do too much for you (Let
ME choose the drivers once in a while!!!!!!), that necessitates
rebooting every few hours of use, piles up loads and loads of useless
and system-slowing crap files, and never really has been close to
stable??? You don't expect to have to restart your car after a few
hours of driving, or for the car to decide it wants to take a longer
slower way when you know a faster one, or the car to slow down
dramatically after a few months of use...why do people accept that in
their computers???

Hangs?
What command line are you giving?
Do you get any error messages?
If so, what are they?
Have you tried the "-v" flag (verbose mode)?
Have you tried the "-f" (fake) (along with -v) flag? (this doesn't mount,
but shows you what it would do if it were going to do a mount)
What sort of disks? (DOSish, ext2)
What entries are there in /etc/fstab?
What type of CDROM (IDE/SCSI)? Supported by what (modules/kernel)?
You can format (low level - "fdformat")?
How about high level ("mkfs")? (file systems)
That it "hangs" is really not sufficient to give us a chance to help you
out (if we can) :-(
What formatted disks do you have?
If you have a vfat (DOSish, long filename support) disk and everything
installed... try:
disk in floppy drive:
Create (if you haven't) and empty directory (say, /mnt/floppy/ which I use
and will assume below).
Try:
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
Then check /mnt/floppy/
(dir /mnt/floppy)
to see what is there.

Does the cable system include any free dialup access? Speakeasy does,
and that's VERY handy in case the DSL goes down for some reason. (I've
only suffered from about 2 hours of downtime in ~3 months of service
with Speakeasy, but it was much worse when I used Bell Atlantic as my
DSL provider.) Given that even fairly limited dial-up accounts typically
cost at least $10/month, that pulls the two much closer in terms of
price, although if that $49 price includes cable TV it may still win out
if you want that service.

You can, sort of (depending on your imwheelrc settings). Mine is set up to
provide a DOWN arrow key press on using the scroll wheel (moving
down). This works. It acts like pressing the down arrow. When creating a
message it moves the cursor down a line. Until the cursor reaches the
bottom of the screen, it doesn't scroll, of course. Then it does.
You can add/edit the entries in imwheel (if you have it working at all,
you probably have imwheel installed and running, there is a man page on it
with info on the imwheelrc file format. Once you look at it, it is pretty
clear how to work with it, add/edit entries). E.g. you can set it up so
SHIFT-down_wheel does a page down key press instead of a line down.

AFAIK, none. There's little need for one in your scenario, though --
you can recompile your binary as a Windows executable, using GCC for
Windows. You can even set up a cross-compiler that runs under Linux,
although I gather this is a bit tricky (I've never done it myself).
This may not be practical if it's a fancy X-based program, but even
then there are X servers for Windows, so chances are you can get it
working. If you plan on doing this sort of thing regularly, you should
look into a cross-platform GUI toolkit. There are quite a few
available.

For a first time user it is hard to beat New Deal. ( www.newdealinc.com )
You should set it up for her first but otherwise it is great. It runs on top
of any DOS ( just like windows 3.1 did over ms-dos ). Included is a very
simple and logical GUI OS which has the look and feel of Win95 and a really
nice set of office applications which are easy to learn and use. This thing
is FAST on a 486. I have set up several people with this as their first
computer with no problems. It even comes bundled with it's own web browser (
although the next version due out soon is supposed to work much better than
the current one ). I love the Mac but if you are on any kind of budget this
is a really good way to start out. ( BTW the base iMac just came down to
$800.00, a really good deal.)

Try giving the command:
startx
if that doesn't work try:
xstart
if that doesn't work try:
xinit
(if you get a graphics screen but not gnome or kde, use CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE
to get back to a command line)
Maybe one of those will work (you should at least get a graphical
"something" and if xinitrc is set up right, you should be in your
graphical interface)
I stopped having Linux automatically start in graphics (I start in text
and use "xinit"). The reason? My monitor died. I had an old
replacement. But ... it required different X-windows settings. Now, how to
get on so I could change the settings when attempting to get on gave me a
graphical login that I could NOT use (it was so bad I could not even enter
my name and password at the login to get on so I could then get to a text
screen)?
I now have it set for a text login and when I want grahics, I start it.

Hi
I am running Mandrake 7.1 on my machine ( AMD Athalon 650 +128M+30G )
I am also running apmd with what ever standard configuration provided
in /etc/sysconfig/apmd
I have also enabled my BIOS power management settings
I have noticed that after about 20 mins of idle time my machine goes
into standby but it wakes up when I do something like moving the mouse
or pressing any key.
But recently I had noticed that if I leave it idle for a longer
time even the power LED goes out and I cannot revive it by any of the
above methods . ( though the CD drives work fine and I can here the
fans inside )
I had to reboot my machine. after it started up I noticed the
following line in
/var/log/messages
>Jul 21 09:50:10 hobbes apmd[360]: System Suspend
What is happening here ? is there a proper way to revive it from
its deep slumber ( with our rebooting) and should I be concerned about
any hardware or settings fault. ? I don't have windows on my machine
so I have no way of checking if I am alright otherwise!
Any comments will be appreciated ..
By the way my kernel version is 2.2.15( one which came with the
distribution ) I have not applied any patches since.
Thanks

If you get a 3rd table in there calle Fruit_Transportation you could issue a
query:
SELECT f.description,t.driver FROM Fruits f, Transportation t,
Fruits_Transportation ft
where
f.type = ft.type and t.truck = ft.truck and
t.tonage < 4000;
Which bananas are driven by which driver in trucks with weight < 4000 lbs.
