If you are wanting it to automatically re-dial then you might look at:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0

And just below the line "ONBOOT=" add this if it isn't already there.

PERSIST=yes
HOLDOFF=60

When disconnected it will wait 60 seconds before re-dialing which is
controlled by the "HOLDOFF=" line. Depending on the ISP you may need to
change this line to give time for their systems to acknowledge that you
are no longer connected.

Hope this helps.

I don't know about other programs, but Netscape (4.73) has proxy support
builtin.

Preferences->Advanced->Proxies

I don't use a separate proxy machine, but I do use it with the
junkbuster proxy server (a truely great program) to filter out annoying
ads and graphics, and unwanted cookies.

One possibility: CD applets. Some of these 'watch' the CD for disk
changes, etc and can cause the behavior you describe. WmCDPlay does for
sure. What I do is, is only run it when I need CD access, otherwise not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the Armada a notebook? If so, you may
quiet safely assume the internal modem is a Winmodem (also known as
software modem), which means it will not work with Linux.

This is for an i586 it will most likely not run on a i386.

Thanks, Thomas and the others. Changing the name of my DOS partition
from /mnt/DOS_hda2 to /mnt/dos did the trick. In my defense, this was
the name that the Mandrake install defaulted to. I previously had given
it the "simple" name.

Just goes to show that even Mandrake can goof up sometimes (although Sun
is obviously more to blame).

Rational choice.
I advice you to wait to the final release of MacOS X with Aqua.
Some people could say that Mac costs much more as equal "PC" configuration.
Indeed. But with Mac you bye a thing.
You don't need to be looking for drivers, hardware patches, and "brain fixes"
:)
Mac works everywhen.

MacOS system X with Aqua.
This one project unite all discoveries and accomplishments of two better (in
such area)
teams:
It's teams from: NeXT and from Apple.

Also there is a better futuristic experimental solutions, at the moment.
But all of them need at least an experienced sys. operator with every user.
:)))

Between, Microsoft say that they apply big forces to development their user
interface.
Bull shit ! MSux-Windows have worse UI from that whole systems which I have
seen !
Between, have you seen Windows 1 ? (require one disk 720 kb in a couple with
DOS 3.0 and some application.)
I sure that it is best version of Windows.
In our country pirates mad the CD which called "Billy's degradation".
It had all version of windows from first to 98 (2000 wasn't accessible,
to the moment of release of the disk). :)))

About the Linux, It's so flexible.
To say that it's good or bad.
There is no technical troubles to run MacOS X features with Aqua under the
Linux.
But seams that Apple don't like to release source code of MacOS X from the
political resons.
Even without Apples things, Linuxes with K.D.E. and with fvwm2 + console
applications
are big differences.

Was nice to talk.

It is a pretty case. Now if we could just get the case with an AMD cpu

** defrag should just work within the C: or D: disk - that is, hda1 or whatever.
In other words, it should not touch the master boot record. More than likely, there
is something in the geometry which is telling the dos program that the partition
extends
further than it really does and it is over writting the start of the linux partition
and
clobbering the superblok.
SO - make sure your linux kernel is below 1024 cylinders and using fdisk or cfdisk,
maybe
see that your partitions end on a cylinder boundary.

You can use 'tmpwatch' on Red Hat as possible other distributions to
remove files from the /tmp directory. It is a bit more safer for those
who don't understand what is in their /tmp directory. Actually, on Red
Hat systems, this program is run on a nightly basis to remove any file
not accessed in the last 10 days. If you want to modify this, edit the
file /etc/cron.daily/tmpwatch.

Is there a problem with doing a text install? At the boot: prompt, type
text. You will then have an opportunity later during the installation to
set up your graphics configuration. That may require trying different
setups until you get one that works; so far required on all of my
installations during the graphics configuration steps :-(

Oops, now that I reread your message, I see that you were talking
talking about problems with graphics configuration (rather than a true

That sounds like an icky way to do it. If you're running something that
can only be started when networking is up, you should add it to run when
networking comes up. pppd, for example, will run scripts when
networking comes and goes.

A shell script? An init script? An ugly Redhat hack (for rc.local,
anyway).

IRQ 0 means that the modem is operating in polling mode--which is a heck
of a lot slower than interrupt-driven mode no matter what you do! I'd
try messing about with setserial kind of like so:

setserial -v /dev/ttyS3 port 0x2e8 irq 3
or
setserial -v /dev/ttyS3 port 0x2e8 auto_irq skip_test autoconfig

Too bad about the DIP switches... are there any letters/numbers near
said switches? Those may mean something to modem gurus in this NG...
