WHat can I (re)install so that this error won't appear again? RIght now
I'm forced to use binary installs all the time.

If I do reinstall, will I break something in the process, is there
something I have to watch out for?

Don't you have a rc-file that starts, reloads, or stops networking.

I think from memory that Caldera advise you to go back to 4.72 if you're
having problems with 4.73 :-)

Your experiences seem to parallel mine - 4.61 was stable, upgrading to
4.72 and then 4.73 and going back to 4.72 caused intermittent crashes
for no apparent reason. Netscape on linux has a reputation as being
crap - I believe it, however I persist with it :-)

Thanks. That worked in the end. Not right away though. After I ran
fdisk,x,c..w I went back into
fdisk and it still reported the old settings, and at the re-boot the BIOS
also still had the same problem. I then went into '98, ran Ghosts gdisk and
suddenly without me doing anything gdisk reported the right settings.

OS/2 is very definitely for the Personal Computer. There is no released
version of OS/2 that runs on anything but Intel (or Intel-compatible)
hardware. We have OS/2 ver. 4 running on a Pentium II/400, a Pentium
III/600, and three 486 machines (including an old Toshiba notebook). In
addition to native OS/2 programs, it also runs Windows 3.1 programs, and
there is a well advanced project to add the capability of running Win9x
programs.

IBM keeps issuing bugfixes and enhancements, the last set of which was
as recent as April this year. Does Microsft keep putting out fixes for
Windows 95, or did they say, "Sorry, you'll just have to buy Windows
98." And are they still issuing fixes for Windows 98, or are users
expected to pay money for the next new version?

There are also Server versions of OS/2, the latest of which was released
a little over a year ago. That still runs on a PC, but adds features
that most end users don't need. It's also much more expensive. It's more
like Windows NT -- but better.

Installing the rpm does not complete installation of StarOffice. Before
running it, you need to run the StarOffice setup program. You can do this
by opening an xterm and typing
"/opt/Office51/bin/setup". Then, to run StarOffice, you type
"/opt/Office51/bin/soffice". There
may be a README file or the like in the Office51 directory that tells you
how to get it integrated into KDE (I don't use KDE, so I can't give you
any details).

More generally, to find files installed from rpm's, you can tell rpm to
list the files in the package, by typing "rpm -ql package_name"
(substituting, of course, the name of the package in question). There's
probably also a way to list a package's files within rpmdrake.

I have a server running Redhat Linux 6.1 and have a strange annoying
time problem. Its really not a big problem, but more of an annoyance
than anything.

Using the date command the system always displays the correct time in
local time (eastern daylight time). All the entries in the system log
files also reflect the correct time. However, the actual timestamp on
any file created on the system, or the timestamp associated with a
process (ps aux) actually shows the time as being 4 hours ahead.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

TIA.

Did you do a make mrproper ???
I had the same problem with 2.2.14 kernel.
I inserted the CPU number disabled function and created this problem, later
I removed it again, but still had problems.
I had to do a "make mrproper" to be able to create new modules and a new

Make sure that you are logged in as "root".
Also, the directory you are trying to configure a program has
to be in a "path" recognized by your compiling files. If it is not under
the "/" partition, your compiling files may not be available.

What is the exact error message you get? Try compiling the following
with gcc, then report...

#include<stdio.h>
int main(void){ printf("Hello, world!\n"); return 0; }

Generally, there are 2 versions of most shared libraries, the runtime
libraries (always needed) and the development libraries (only needed if
you are compiling stuff from source.) In an RPM-based system, the
development libs come in packages like glibc-6.0.2-devel.rpm, so try
installing those packages if you didn't install them.

Personally I would say "go for software RAID!!!" don't believe the stories
that hardware RAID produces better performance. To gain the same throughput
on a hardware RAID, you will use about 10-15% extra CPU load. Th eproblem is
that you have alot of latency between the drivers, kernel, hardware
raid-controller and the disks.

When you do decide to go for a hardware raid controlelr, then go for Mylex
(that is supported out of the box by SuSE).

About the RAID recommendation, use RAID 10 (that is RAID 0 in a RAID 1
mirror) boosts alot of through put and gives you a very high-level of data
security.

What about webbased and pop3 I would say do them both. POP3 generates less
overhead on your system and you give users the choice.

There is probably an easy work around for this.. Try typing at the initial
LILO prompt 'linux text' and running the text mode installation. Your
particular drivers may not be available in the GUI install kernel.

There is only on real solution here: Buy a Cisco 2500 series with 2
Serials in there.
That will loadshare on default (using the round robin method).

Hi,
I have installed RedHat 6.0 and can't seem to find ipop3d. Does
anyone know where I can get it? or is it part of RedHat 6.0.
I also have RedHat 6.2, is ipop3d part of RedHat version 6.2?
Thanks

What version of XFree86 are you using? Caldera posted a fix to 3.3.6
that solved the problem for me. You might get onto their site and check
the updates pages.

Subject: UPS with serial port
From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi,

I'm looking for recomendations for UPSs that Linux can work with to do
a proper shutdown. Does Tripplite support Linux? I've been told to
avoid APC because it only puts out 90v on battery. I don't want to
waste my power supply.

Is there a UPS Linux compatibility list somewhere?

Is there a common protocol used by USPs? How difficult would it be to
spy on the serial port if there isn't?
