Hello, I am just learning how to set up the pop server on my linux box.
Firstly, I don't have a fully qualified domain name, so for testing purposes
what server name should I use, localhost, localhost.localdomain.com etc?
secondly, where do I set up the users accounts? ie mailconf, userconf? and
thirdly, how do I test the pop mail server? ie sendmail ?

ps I have no access to use xwindows gui.

I would greatly appreciate any info to email, thanks

Michael

Enable "Use real mode APM bios call to power off" in your kernel config,
and you should be OK :)

You should run "make clean" before "make bzImage" :) Although this will
probably not remove the unresolved symbol messages.

this is a losing battle. microsoft doesn't know how to keep time.
they try to adjust the hardware clock for daylight savings. if you
have two operating systems trying to play this game you can easily see
how losing it really is. i let windows think i live in greenwich
england without daylight savings time.

Another point to keep in mind is that Netatalk is a *VERY* finicky
package. Some binaries (or source package, for that matter) work fine,
whereas others flake out in assorted ways. My advice is that if you
run into serious problems with Netatalk, acquire a second and, if
necessary, third and fourth, package. You can find them at places like
http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/. FWIW, here's the information on the
package I'm using:

$ rpm -qi netatalk
Name        : netatalk                     Vendor: (none)
Version     : 1.4b2+asun2.1.3        Distribution: (none)
Release     : 4                        Build Host: minakanusi.ns.musashi-tech.ac.jp
Install Date: 1999-12-30T04:27:47Z Build Date: 1999-04-22T04:55:03Z
Size        : 475161                   Source RPM: netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-4.src.rpm
Group       : Networking
Copyright   : GPL
Packager    : iNOUE Koichi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Summary     : AppleTalk networking programs

Note that not just the version and release number are important; who
built it also matters -- after all, Fred's build x of version y may be
quite different from Sally's build x of version y.

I tried this and did not work, I ran setup-net as root and it install,
tnen I loged in as user and try to run setup and get the message that my
script needs to be fixed, I said ok. and the SO installation windows pop
up does whatever it does and said that it is completely installed but it
does not run at all, I downloaded the manual from Sun and I do not see
the screens that they show in there when I try to do a user install.\

If you have any suggestions I will try them.

Subject: gcc-newbie question...
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 16:30:43 +0200

I have just started to try out a little C-programming under Linux and I
am playing around with some small programs just to "try things out". I
wrote the following program which simply is supposed to displays a
message if there is a PCI-bios presenet in the machine;

#include <linux/pci.h>

int main(){
    if (pcibios_present()) printf("PCI-bios found...");
}

int pcibios_present(void) is defined in pci.h...
I then try to compile the program with:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ testpci.c

testpci.c is of course the name of the program and __KERNEL__ needs to
be defined when including "pci.h" to get everything included.
But when I try compiling I get an error-message from ld (the linker),
saying:

undefined reference to 'pcibios_present'

I suppose this means the linker cant find the "pci.o"-object file or
something, and therefore is unable to link in 'pcibios_present()'.

How should I compile this program to make it work?
What am I doing wrong?

All the libraries should be installed in their "standard" places as I am
just using a freshly installed Linux distribution from SuSE.

Hope somebody can help me out...

Geir.

If you run it from a shell it'll probably say "xvidtune: command not found"

I thought a shutdown would eventually get round to kill -9 ing a process

        You should probably try to get your money back if they're
really as incompotent as you've hinted at.

        Anyway, if you're just wanting to rename files and
directories, use `mv`.  For example:

$ ls -F
olddirname/
$ mv olddirname newdirname
$ ls -F
newdirname/

        You can also use the `man` or `info` commands to look at the
documentation for other commands, such as `mv`. (eg - `man mv` will
display the manual for `mv`)

        That said, I don't really understand what you're trying to
do. Well, I understand up to where you mounted the old D drive as
/home. What happened to the original /home? And why would you mount
the new partition as /usr? That doesn't sound like such a good idea.
If you really want those 6 gigs used for every day stuff, you might as
well just reinstall. Redhat's latest releases make the install rather
painless. Plus, you'll learn a lot more about Linux (which is, I
assume, what you want to do? :) by installing yourself.

I am having the same problem. I think that the problem is knowing how to
perform the network installation from the .bin files that you can download
from the sun site. I have read about the -net and /Net options but they
make no difference if they are used as parameters to the .bin execution. I
also do not see the screens that the installation guide describes when
attempting a user install following the standard installation. If anyone
has an answer to this question then it would be greatfuly
appreciated........

Yes.
In my pc, i set it's bios to ignore all errors and continue the boot
process.
then I removed the video card, and the keyboard.

So if you can set your laptop to boot ignoring all errors, it should work
fine.

Those files are being found OK; the ones it can't find are in these lines:

>> /usr/include/bits/local_lim.h:27: linux/limits.h: No such file or directory

>> /usr/include/bits/socket.h:252: asm/socket.h: No such file or directory

These are both inside /usr/src/linux.
Check:

a] /usr/src/linux contains your kernel header files.
b] /usr/src/linux/include/asm is a symlink pointing to the right asm-whatever
for your platform.
