But not in the United States, for a house that was designed after
December 1, 1990, when the Copyright Act was amended to include
"architectural works."

An "architectural work" is the design of a building as embodied
in any tangible medium of expression, including a building,
architectural plans, or drawings. The work includes the overall
form as well as the arrangement and composition of spaces and
elements in the design, but does not include individual standard
    features.
17 USC 101.

When you construct the building, you are reproducing the architectural
plans and infringing their copyright. But you can modify the building
without infringing the right to make derivative works because of the
special rule in 17 USC 120(b), and can make pictures of the building
if it is ordinarily visable by the public under 17 USC 120(a).

You can build a house that is an exact copy of the White House, but
that's because it was constructed before the amendment to the Copyright
Act.

there is a file called XF86Config,
locate XF86Config
will tell you where it is e.g. /etc/X11/XF86Config on my box
Edit the file using vi
IIRC just eliminate lines saying "virtual"
and/or
make sure all resolutions that are in the file match your preferences. In
other words, get rid of "1280x1024" if you want the max to be "800x600"

I'm using RH6.1. The release name and number seem to come from
/etc/redhat-release. Doing a rpm -qf on that file tells me it came
from package redhat-release-6.1-1. When you say "redhat-release.rpm
but this doesn't contain version number or release name" are you
looking at the package level of the rpm or at the contents?

There is a howto, but I once spent an entire weekend NOT getting it to
work. Then I found "mkbootdisk". You probably have it in /sbin

Subject: linux lockups
Date: 05 Aug 2000 17:38:24 -0400

I've owned this machine (a PII 350) for over a year. For around 9
months it was (nearly) rock solid, despite several kernel changes and
such.

Then, around 3 months ago I installed a new video card (S3 Virge/GX2).
Now, about once every 2-3 weeks, I get a lockup. The symptoms are:
I'll be working along in X (using FVWM2). It generally happens when I
move to another virtual desktop (ctrl-arrow). Suddenly the screen
will have multi-hued (blue and gray) vertical stripes. The machine
is totally locked at that point, I can't even use the (electronic)
power button--I have to hit the (mechanical) reset button.

Around 2 weeks ago, I started using gnus (from within an
emacs-on-X-but-not-XEmacs window) to read Usenet. About once every
3-4 DAYS I get a lockup while starting (or restarting) gnus. The
major symptoms (total freeze, can't use power button) are the same,
but I don't get stripes.

I don't know if these two problems are related and I also don't know
what the solutions are. Can anyone help?

Other info:

-RH6.1 (upgrade from 5.x)
-Kernel 2.2.16
-When gnus lockup happens (and presumably stripey lock, too), I can't
even ping from another machine.
- I've captured an strace of the gnus freeze, but it doesn't show
anything obvious. Of course, the key data may have been in memory
about to be printed when it locked.

Some success. I found some stuff in console.c that depends
on CONFIG_SERIAL_ECHO being set, so I put in a line #define
CONFIG_SERIAL_ECHO = 1, recompiled and bingo - messages from
the kernel. I still don't get all the messages though.

Interestingly, the code for serial-echo is not in console.c
in my copy of Corel Linux based on a 2.2 kernel. Was it
removed? Is it somewhere else?

Peter

I gave up on the ViRGE because of stuff like this. I *think* it has
to do with the buffer fill rate and ready/wait handshaking. Dunno
for sure, but in my case it was sensitive to both the mobo and the
video card.

Since excellent replacements for the turkey ViRGE are cheap now,
I decided it's not worth the trouble.
