Nowhere. gnome-ppp is not actively developed.
Consider using RedHat's dial-up tool rp3. It is
disigned for gnome and is actively developed.

What does this mean?

Aug 6 04:02:11 dh231b04 kernel: Directory sread (sector 0x20) failed
Aug 6 04:02:11 dh231b04 kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device

Aug 6 04:02:11 dh231b04 kernel: dev 02:00 blksize=512 blocknr=32

Is it due to a configuration error on my part?

[Snip lots more analysis based on fundamental misunderstanding.]

You can add another: Science is free. When someone makes a
scientific discovery, they publish it for any and all others
to review, critique, reproduce, and build upon. Whatever
economic theories you may have will have to deal with this
reality, because no other system for scientific discovery
tried in human history comes close to the open publication
system in terms of results.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I need to increase the size of my /usr partition. I performed a backup
of /usr to a drive on another machine using cp -a. I noticed "unable to
perform operation" errors as the files were being copied. I assume this
has to do with file permissions, since most files in /usr are owned by
root. I noticed that the user:group identies on the backup files had
been reset to large numeric values. I presume this is some sort of
default behaviour.

My question is this: Can I safely delete my existing /usr partition and
restore all the files from backup to a new, larger /usr partition? If
not, how do I accomplish resizing the /usr partition without having to
reinstall my entire system?

TIA

Hi,

Has anyone successfully installed Suse Linux 6.4 onto a Mylex DAC960
PDU? I beleive that this should be possible but when I try installing
under YAST2 I get the following errors during the package installation
phase.

Could't setup swap partition /dev/rd/c0d01
RPM returned an error
The root password could not be set
Couldn't write values to /etc/rc.config

I have also tried using the text based YAST installation but that
doesn't even detect the array.

I know that the hardware is set up correctly as I can install and run
Redhat 6.2 without any problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

More specific, please? Is she trying to make animated GIFs? To do
this, you make an image with one layer for each frame in the animation,
convert the image to indexed more, and save as GIF. Gimp will then ask
you if you want to save the image as an animation.

Also, try following this link for even more information:

Device 02:00 is /dev/fd0, or the floppy drive. This is most likely
*not* an error on your part, but could be due to a number of things. If
the floppy itself has bad sectors on it, you will get messages like this
when you attempt to access those bad sectors. If you're trying to read
a floppy that's formatted with a filesystem your kernel doesn't have
support for, or if you're trying to read a 1.7M floppy using the regular
/dev/fd0 device, you'll see messages like this. Mount a 1.7M floppy
using /dev/fd0u1722 for best results.

(Hint: You can format a normal HD floppy to 1.7M instead of 1.4M by
doing "fdformat /dev/fd0u1722 && mkdosfs /dev/fd0u1722", and both Linux
and Win9x will be able to read/write to this floppy, no problem. WinNT
will choke and die[!!] )

src.rpm are source files. You need to ./configure; make; make install

There is, alas, a beta out now. But based on what I heard, I would not

Tried hylafax but after messing around it for a week, I found it was not
usable because I need a class 2 fax modem.
I got efax which will work on class 1 (mine and most cheap fax non
winmodems) and fax 2 written by a fellow Vancouverite here in Canada.
It works great with a fax entry in my printcap, so I got Star Office 5.2

and with a little work I got Word Perfect to fax out by switching from
printer to fax. I never tried receiving a fax, but I assume it works
fine.
I got my efax from the Redhat 6.2 Powertools CD which is avaiable as a
free down load for individual programs or the entire CD.

You might want to try the Roaring Penguin implementation of PPP over
Ethernet. That's what I use with Redhat 6.2. The URL is
      http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe.html
If you are using PPP over Ethernet this is a good site to visit as it has
quite a bit of information regarding this
topic including a white paper.

You may find that you have to set your MTU to 1400 or even 1325 to get all
web and ftp sites working.

I don't know, but you might want to shut down PCMCIA services until you
figure it out what is wrong and see if everything else is
OK beyond the PCMCIA services.
At the lilo prompt, get into single user mode

lilo: linux single
# cd /etc/rc.d/rc5.d

# reboot

Once you get pcmcia fix relink it
# cd /etc/rc.d/rc5.d

There is Modem Lights for gnome, but that runs on linux, and there are

Can anyone point me in the direction of a client/server program that allows

The only way I have been able to do this so far is by running VNC

Whatever your criteria might be for choosing one system over another,
power consumption shouldn't enter into the equation unless you are
buying a laptop. An Athlon system requires a 300W power supply,
equivalent to a couple of light bulbs, about 1/5 the power required by a
toaster.

Centuries ago, Nostradamus foresaw a time when Vegard Engen would say:

Consider too that it likely will include:
a) XFree86 4.0
b) Some form of Helix Gnome, perhaps even awaiting "Nautilus"

... Which I don't regard as worthy of the slightest bit of "alas."

By releasing the beta now, with clear labelling that it is not for the
"faint of heart," it offers the opportunity for some _actually useful_
testing to take place.

It doesn't beat genuine regression testing, and it would do RHAT well
to take some cues from the test suites Cygnus had for GCC, and have
some _heavily automated_ test suites to make sure RHAT Linux conforms
to _some_ form of "functioning well."

I saw a "technology pre-release" from Caldera of Linux "pre-2.4" with
some experimental libc, gcc, and X stuff boxed at CompUSA the other day;
that's probably about as "flakey" as the present form of RHAT 7...

Sorry, have not been following this thread.
Have you checked the bios. I had a problem where the port was set
as auto and would not work until I set com1 with the correct
io/irq.

Assumed you set the modem port with the "control-panel" utility.

Until you get minicom to get an OK from the modem, It has to be
the link in /dev, the mother board circuit, cable, or modem,
or an io/irq conflict.

to show io port address cat /proc/ioports
to show block devices cat /proc/devices
to show interrupts cat /proc/interrupts

Subject: VNC and my proxy

Hi!

I=B4m sitting in front of my Linux Workstation. Behind this WS is a Linux=

Server which is connected to the internet.
Now i want to use VNC from my Workstation and connect to a PC over the
internet. But of course this does not work because of my proxy!

I know that it is possible to route the VNC port (5900) through my
server, but i don=B4t know, how!
Does anyone know?

I also thought of connceting direcly from my server, which would work,
but there is no X-Server running on my server. Is it possible to
redirect the X-Output from my server to the X-Server on my Workstation?

Tanks for any help!

MfG

I copied a Linux CD onto a Windows hard disk and the links
copied without damaging anything. However, they didn't work!

You could also try using Norton utility or similar to edit
the partition table in DOS/Win and put it back to what it
was. The advice about a boot partition is good if your BIOS
is a little older and doesn't support large hard disks, but
I don't think it is needed for BIOSs that have this built in
(eg by LBA).

As for why it happened ........ No idea!
