Of course, very few ideas are really original. Nobody needs to reinvent
the wheel. Just trying to improve upon the basic designs.
It's perfectly okay to have your personal bias. Or else, the world would
be really dull.
When people disagree, then, a conflict is being created, then, dialogs
will open up to try to solve the differences, then, progress is made.
There's no progress in human without conflicts. As long as we can remain
relatively cool, and solve the involving issues with our brains, instead
of with muscles. ;-)

Assuming you have a reasonably recent distribution of Linux,
it supports reading and writing DOS/Windows disks. Many
distributions will set up any DOS or Windows partitions dna
automatically mount them in the Linux filesystem. If not,
then
Create a directory, say dosc, to mount the DOS partition in
with
mkdir /dosc
Mount the Windows partition (assumed here to be the first
partition - hda1) with
mount -tvfat /dev/hda1 /dosc
Now you can use cp or your favorite file manager to copy to
your heart's content.
Incidentally type vfat is FAT32 (probably needed for the
Win98 partition), type msdos is FAT16 or FAT12.
Good luck
Peter

Subject: linking compat-egcs-5.2 package on Redhat 6.1
Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 23:09:05 GMT
Hello.
I am trying to use the compat-egcs-5.2 package to link some glibc-2.0
object files on my Redhat 6.1 system.
Normally, if I call the compat-egcs-5.2 compiler from the command line,
the correct glibc-2.0 libraries are linked in automatically.
In this case, however, the compat-egcs-5.2 compiler is being called
from a shell script and I am getting "undefined references" for
`_IO_stdin_' , `_IO_stdout_', and `_IO_stderr_'
(see error messages below).
Here is the compat-egcs-5.2 compiler call that does not work:
/usr/bin/i386-glibc20-linux-gcc
-static
-Xlinker
-Map
-Xlinker hello.map
-L/usr/local/PDCProlog/lib
-o hello
/usr/local/PDCProlog/lib/initx1.o
/usr/local/PDCProlog/lib/cmainx.o hello.o hello.s.o
-lprolog -lc -lm
I don't get it.
Would someone please tell me what is going on here and explain how I
can these "undefined references" to link in correctly?
Thanks.

Add a line like:
/dev/hda1 /WinC vfat umask=000 0 0
To your /etc/fstab file, create the mount point and issue a mount
command 'mount /WinC' (only need to do this manually the first time --
this will happen automagically at every reboot from now on).
Now your entire C: drive is available under /WinC/.

Yep, FAT support has been around almost since the beginning, and VFAT
support since at least 1.7 years, probably more.
[snip of useful, mostly correct advice]

Not quite. "msdos" support includes FAT32 now, or at least I can mount
a 3.5G FAT32 partition as type msdos. VFAT refers to the somewhat
inelegant hack that MS used to support long filenames without breaking
backwards compatability with 8+3, and it is used on FAT32, FAT16, and
FAT12 these days AFAICT.

You can read your files from linux. You need to mount your
dos/fat partition in linux. If you want to do this "permanently" so
the dos partition is always available to read, you can add the dos
partitions to the file system table /etc/fstab. If you just want to
mount the dos partitions occasionally, you can mount them manually
with mount (man mount, if you need more information). If you want to
put the dos files in an ext2 partition, you can copy them normally,
like any other file readable by linux. Note that permissions work a
bit differently on dos files (since it does not have inherent
permissions). One uses "umask", if I recall correctly (I don't set
this up often, and it's been a while).

Your hardware is likely to be supported, even if it is
not listed specifically. For the video card, you need to find out
what chip set it uses, and then try the drivers for that chip set.
With luck, one will work. For the monitor, you need to find out the
vertical and horizontal synch and refresh rates. Then use those rates
to set up X (as with SaX or XConfigurator). Many vendors list their
monitor specs on the web, so hunting there for a data sheet is likely
to work. If you are not supported, you can always use default vga for
a video driver (but will lose most of your card's capability). Suse
is a good site to check for video drivers, since they specialize in
them (among other things). Also, contact your card vendor . Even if
they do not make a linux driver, they may point you to a site that
posts a third party driver.

Well, actually they can't. They can do some primitive stuff (that happens
to be what they do 95% of the time) and have to seek help for anything else.
The serious trouble is they want it even `easier' and degrade. And so
degrades the MSWindows OS.

Latest release is version 21.5. Requires EDD packet calls on int 0x13 to boot
beyond cylinder 1024. There is a 'make floppy' diagnostic diskette which will
test your BIOS.

The new version of lilo will only allow you to forget about the 1024
cylinder limit if your BIOS supports it. Supposedly most new BIOSes do,
but it's worth noting that if you install Linux on a disk which supports
this option, and you then move the disk to an older machine whose BIOS
doesn't support the extension, then it won't boot.
Share and Enjoy!

I have used ATAPI CDROMs since kernel 1.2.13 and never had any
problems. I recently used 2.2.16 and now 2.4.0-testx. There is
nothing wrong with the driver.
If the problem were present on only one machine I'd say it is most
likely due to some hardware problem (maybe as simple as incorrect
jumper setting on the CDROM) but since it occurs on multiple machines
(and presumably with different CDROMs?):
In your kernel config, have you selected ISO9660 file system support?
If its a module, does it get loaded?
You may also want Joliet extensions and Codepage-437 or -850 and
NLS ISO 8859-1. You find that in the kernel config under:
Main Menu --> File Systems --> Native Language Support
Can you do manually:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /mnt
You could also try to put the CDROM on the secondary IDE controller,
it would then become /dev/hdc. Make sure jumpers are set correctly.
