Read the manual perhaps? From mgetty.config:

# and mode "rw-rw-r--" (0664). *LEADING ZERO NEEDED!*
port-owner uucp

hi,
I had a linux redhat 6.2 machine and I installed Windows. Now I'm not
getting the Lilo prompt. Is there anyway that I can boot the vmlinuz
image through a boot disk? Once I can acccess the linux partitions in my
computer , I can rewrite lilo using /sbin/lilo.
Thanks in avance

First arrange a CD which contains the redhat image or get a floppy which
has kernel. (CD is a better option). Now, boot ur computer through the
CD-ROM by writing this at the boot prompt of CD Boot.
Boot prompt :> vmlinuz root=/dev/hda?
where /dev/hda? is the partition which is the root partition.
the system will boot up with some errors.
Now, log in as root and edit the /etc/lilo.conf file
change the line having /dev/hda to /dev/fd0
place a floppy in the comp and run /sbin/lilo
now you have a bootdisk.
Other better way of preparing a boot disk is to use mkbootdisk (as root)

Thanks.
By the way... I did mention that I could install the rpm's from a
command line in an xterm. Hmmm...reread my post and it might not have
been clear, but that's what I meant in my 2nd paragraph.
I don't mind using the command line....just figured that what I was
asking for should be included in X, or else it would seem kinda
pointless to have programs that install RPM's within X.

If you have created the "rescue" disk during the installation, simply
boot with it, it will ask if you want to boot from /dev/hda5 (usually
the standard), simply press enter and your'in.
Then edit your lilo.conf file to add the Windows partition and type
lilo to update the MBR and re-install the boot loader.
If you do not have the Rescue Disk, you can create it from the Red
Hat Cd Rom.

Does anyone know how to create the entry in the autofs map file for a
smbfs mount to a windows share with a space in its name.
For example, in the entry below the windows machine has a share named

"//winpc/etsi" in the mount.
share_a1 -fstype=smbfs,username=user,password=pass ://winpc/share a1

He did it wrong. I posted that, but the message apparently hasn't left
my news server. He used /etc/mgetty+sendfax/nologin.ttyS2, not
/etc/nologin.ttyS2.
I personally find it a little bit strange to put all files in
/etc/mgetty+sendfax with the exception of nologin.ttyxx. But there might
be a reason. Maybe someone can enlighten me (only concerning this issue
please).

What you say is true, though surprisingly graphics is only part
of developing a game. There are other aspects such as audio and input
devices to be taken into account. By building an API that includes all
aspects of game development then it would help in making the game
developer's life easier, and everyone gets to gain from that. I would
certainly consider OpenGL as the solution for the graphics, because the
last thing we need is yet another graphics API.

If you will be exclusively using Linux on that hardware, a less
expensive video card may be just fine. I'm using a Riva TNT card on
mine and it works great.
AFAIK, XFree86/Mesa still doesn't support hardware 3D acceleration, so
all the new features of the latest boards won't gain you very much. In
terms of 2D performance (Which definitely affects XFree86), IMO, most
modern boards perform equally well.
(If hardware accelerated OpenGL is available for Linux, I'd love to
know. A pointer to a web site for a non-commercial offering would be
greatly appreciated.)

The Ensoniq AudioPCI (Identifies under Linux as an ES1371 or ES1370) is
supported in FreeBSD for sure. About $30.

Although there is some of that to be taken into account, more and
more hardware is being accessed via an abstraction layer and POSIX
is actually supported on a good number of platforms, so at least
you know that have common threading model available. The whole point
of an API would be to hide these differences.

This used to be the case in the past, but with 3D accelerator cards
using OpenGL, computers being so fast and games companies wanting
to look for the larger user base ( they would rather avoid putting
all their eggs in one basket if the could afford it ), then there
certainly be people interested in such a solution.

This is the whole point of an API, to hide these differences from the
games developer as much as possible.
The way I reckon the API would take form is for a working reference
platform to exist and then everyone else simply implements the API
as necessary on their platform - much in the same way as OpenGL or
the JavaVM.

What you could do in emacs is mark the ^M character, copy it (Ctrl-W),
then do a search-replace (Meta-%, I think). Yank the ^M into the
search-replace buffer (Ctrl-Y), and replace with nothing (leave the line
empty). Hit y (yes) a few times and you're set.
Yes, it's the long way around. Yes, there IS a better way. Yes, I'm
perfectly content doing this because it works.
Some Win32 editors (like EditPad, http://www.jgsoft.com/, it's tabbed,
it's cool) can "export" from DOS to UNIX and vice versa.

Indeed. Welsh isn't understood by most humans, but something in Welsh
has the same freedom of speech as anything else. Most scientific and
technical writing isn't understandable by most people, either.

Subject: X and the Diamond S540...
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 15:49:00 GMT
I just installed Corel Linux which uses a gui setup (just fine in 16bit
color). Corel defaults to running KDM after the machine starts. I've
got a Diamond S540 and when KDM loads I get a blank screen followed by
something like a PowerSave shutdown of the monitor. Switching Virtual
Terminals, turns the monitor back on and gives me a character login
prompt. The same thing happens to X if I user startx form the command
prompt.
Could someone provide some insight on this? I'm fairly baffled at this
point and don't really know where to start.
Thanks.
