Subject: Kernel Panic Error

Can anyone help with solving this problem please?
Hardware:
AMD K6/2 500
144MB RAM
Adaptec 2944UW (diff), 4 x HP C2490A hard drives (2GB each)
Adaptec 1542CP SCSI + Seagate 2.7GB drive (Card and drive now removed)
1 x 3Com EtherLink III 3C509 Combo card
1 x TNT2 video card.
IDE 40x CD-ROM
I finally installed Red Hat 6.2 last week after 4 failed attempts, all down
to having 2 SCSI adapters and the device order was being changed between
installation and boot. This meant the the device I thought was to be the
boot device, changed from sda to sde. Fixed that by re-partitioning and
removing the 1542CP card and attached hard drive.
Now after running OK for a few days, I put an extra 128MB memory module in
and it failed to boot, complaining that it could not open the swap
partition.
I've removed the extra module so back to where I was but no joy, but now get
the following at the end of the messages (there are various references to
RAID but I don't remember installing it as an option):
raid 5: measuring checksum speed
raid 5:MMX detected .....
.
.
scsi: 0 hosts
scsi: detected total
md.c:sizeof(mdp_super_t)=4096
Partition Check
RAMDISK:Compressed image found at block 0
autodetecting RAID Arrays
autorun...
...autorun DONE
VFS:Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
autodetecting RAID Arrays
autorun...
...autorun DONE
kmod:failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s-k block-major-8,errno=2
VFS:cannot open root device 08:21
Kernel Panic:VFS:unable to mount root fs on 08:21
I found some help suggesting a boot from the emergency floppy using "linux
rescue" but this seemed to boot from the floppy to start with then finished
from hard disk with the same errors.
Is there a way of trying to check out the partitions without going through
the install and removing/re-installing everything?
Thanks in advance.

If you like Gravity you might like to look at Xemacs/Gnus.
(Gravity is the Win newsreader with scoring isn't it?) I believe some
of Gravitys features may be modeled on Gnus.

I can't ping, I kow why but don't know what to do about it.
My ethernet card is getting picked up OK:
NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x320: 00 00 6e 31 7d d3
eth0: NE2000 found at 0x320, using IRQ 10.
But somthing is wrong as I then get the following messages:
eth0: Tx timed out, lost interrupt? TSR=0x3, ISR=0x3, t=924.
eth0: Tx timed out, lost interrupt? TSR=0x3, ISR=0x3, t=1000.
Obviously something is messed up here, I just don't know what.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Robert

Hi all,
Something very unexpected has been happening to me lately: whenever
I try to copy files from floppies using the mcopy command, the
kernel just freezes and stops responding to any input. It
responds only to the "big red switch"! What's the problem? Note
that there are nothing wrong with the floppies. I know, because
I can copy the files using Win98. The files were copied onto the
floppies using mcopy on a different machine.
Cheers

yes, my distro (RedHat 5.x and 6.x) came with ppp-on and ppp-off scripts.

very definitely

I have something called GetRight that works the same...don't know if
it's affiliated with the "official" one

Once you do some Unix/Linux shell-scripting, you'll realize that DOS
DOESN'T have scripting ability.

Best Distro (for a newbie): RedHat
"Best App": For what? The above list? You'll find most of it on any
Linux CD. The only thing you might be missing is gpg (because of
export restrictions). You can find it at www.gpg.org

Depends on what you are doing. Probably C.

Any non-Winmodem and Soundblaster-compatible. dunno about lcd

the smart video recorder III is supported.
this is no longer produced by intel; if you can buy it then get it now.
if you want that particular one.
the zoltrix tuner/video catpure card is supported...
thats the one I've got.
there are 20 others that are supported.
Generally any video capture card using the conexant/phillis
Bt 848 or bt 878 chip will work ; at least for base band video (AV) input.
The tuner on my zoltrix works fine;
I use the application xawtv for watching and bttv driver for the card.

Well, since 'they' got it working on a palm pilot, I'd say thats a pretty
small LCD screen ;-)

Try 'insmod vfat'. If that doesn't work, you'll have to rebuild your
kernel with vfat support.

How nice it is when every now and then I can answer my own questions:
The problem here was the bios set up. Although Plug and Pray is turned
off the BIOS was set to use IRQ10 for PCI slot, as my ethernet card is
sitting on the ISA bus IRQ10 was robbed later after the ethernet card
was initialized. Setting the bios to use IRQ10 for the ISA slot fixed
the problem.
Happy Hacking,
Robert
