That doesn't exist. The device files you need are made by a utility
that alsa supply (called snddevices?). What you need is to load
the drivers. If you don't want to do it by hand, you have to edit
conf.modules and let the kmod daemon do it for you.
It sounds like you need to read the instructions again!
Here is an appropriate module structure (minus the oss stuff)
snd-ens1371 8808 0
snd-pcm 28000 0 [snd-ens1371]
snd-timer 7304 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-rawmidi 8152 0 [snd-ens1371]
snd-seq-device 2796 0 [snd-rawmidi]
snd-ac97-codec 22256 0 [snd-ens1371]
snd-mixer 22180 0 [snd-ens1371 snd-ac97-codec]
snd 32504 0 [snd-ens1371 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-rawmidi
snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer]
soundcore 2040 6 [snd]
And here is the conf.modules business that corresponds:
# ALSA sound settings
alias char-major-116 snd
# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ens1371
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

truths." The exchange that my post referred to was:

Between this post, and your response to my post, I count three instances of
what could be reasonably viewed as "arrogant assertions of opinions as
truths."
1. Nope. Absolutely not...
2. There is no "harder" way...
3. That's where you're wrong...
But, my post was not meant as a personal attack. I was simply trying to say
that whatever works some someone can be "right" for them - that there are no
absolute rules in Linux (or anything else) as your "dogmatic" answers seem
to indicate.

I don't think so. It's conventional to indicate the degree of certainty
(or conviction!) of the writer via modifiers such as IMO, IANAL, etc,
but when the subject matter is necessarily an opinion, you shouldn't
have to think of using a weakener in order to orient the reader. The
content of the post is my opinion, and that's that.
In this case the original question was plain silly ("what is the best
distro for a newbie to learn on") and I had no intention of treating
it as though it were a well thought-out one! "Slackware" is a fine
response. He asked what would be best for learning, didn't he?
: But, my post was not meant as a personal attack. I was simply trying to say

What "works" is not an issue. What is the best distro to learn on, is.
And in my opinion, slackware is. Failing that, a copy of coherent unix
from way back when may also be a good starter. Both have the merit
of not hiding the works under layers of obfuscation.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am doing a software engineering research project about software
development. The development of Linux especially interests me because
its development is very different from other big software projects. I
was able to find web sites about the history of Linux, but I couldn't
find much information about how the process of development of Linux is
organized. Does anybody know where I can find such information?
The following questions espectially interests me:
Is there a group of people who are mainly responsible to organize and
manage the development of Linux?
Who incorporate the new patches and new ported program into Linux (the
whole package, instead of just the kernal, i mean)? Distributors like
Redhat make the decision or their own distribution or is there some kind
of standard of what to put in?
Is their anybody or website who keep track of all the revisions of
Linux?
Regards,
Jason

One Method:
1. Create a logoff script which schedules a shutdown in 30 minutes.
See http://www.jsiinc.com/Tip0400/rh0429.htm. Put "shutdown /t:1800"
in the script.
2. Create a logon script to cancel the shutdown with " shutdown /a"
Method Two:
Set the default screensaver (the one that shows when no=one is logged
in) to "shutdown.scr" and set it to start in 30minutes. You'll need
to do a net search for the shutdown.scr screensaver and manually edit
the default user registry.
