that would be good. But also having the pop server only connect with a
specified isp for mail from there and then the local machines would get
that mail from the internal pop server. sort of a mail proxy

Does anyone know of software that can track outgoing Internet usage by
listing the originating computer name and domain accessed. Then be able to
block certain sites. I would imagine this would reside on a DNS server but
am unsure. TIA

You probably also have to modify the tables locating the files
on the disk. I think in ISO9660 those are located contineously
at the start of the disk, so with a good caching system that
would not be too time consuming. So my idea definetly would
speed up modifications on an ISO9660 system, but it would never
be as fast as filesystems designed for modifications.

What I am suggesting is how a image file on an ext2 or fat
filesystem can be modified fast and still be legal ISO9660,
that image file can be written to a CD-R or CD-RW as usual.
Modifying the filesystem directly on the CD-RW would still
be slow, and probably always will with ISO9660.

I am primarily suggesting new ways to modify the existing
data structures used by ext2, fat and a lot of other
filesystems. I was not suggesting that the interpretation
of the data structures should be changed thus it will be
compatible with other programs using those structures.
What I am suggesting can be done using simple disk block
reads and writes supported by _all_ harddrives.

Subject: postgres : how recuperate old database files
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 13:28:41 GMT

Hello !

We have the following problem:
A database which had to be transferred from one system to another was not
dumped, but the person who did the transfer just copied the entire database
directory from within data/base/. Putting this directory into the new
/data/base/ directory doesn't work, the system can not find the database.
Is there any way to recuperate this database, even if it is table by table ?

Why this reluctance to use LOGROTATE that was specifically designed for this? Is
the NOT INVENTED HERE factor as high as this, even among self-declared
professionals? 8-(

Well, there's no reluctance. I use it for many things (despite it having
known bugs, like not being willing to work for anyone but root).
However, the question here was not "how do I use logrotate", but "how do
I write a script that does what logrotate does".

How can I create binfmt_misc dir in /proc/sys/fs ?
/proc is mounted with none device.

I'd love to insert a few binary formats as described in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/binfmt_misc.txt while the support is
compiled in as CONFIG_BINFMT_MISC=m.

Thanx.

what about tar? can you make a big tar file and then burn it straight
off to the cd-writer? list with tar tvf /dev/cdrom and extract using
tar xvf /dev/cdrom just like when using a tape. maybe a cpio archive
would be better?

Subject: sound support compiled into kernel but no sound?
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 14:16:10 GMT

hi everyone

got a little problem with a ESS Maestro soundcard and wondered if anyone
has come across the same card and its soln.

the card in question is actually a Videologic 5D Sonic which is a (pci)
graphix card and soundcard on the same board - the graphix card works
fine, but its the sound card (well, the sound bit :) taht i cant figure
out.

with a no-sound-modules-included-2.2-kernel, doing a `lspci -v` reports:

     ...
00:12.1 Multimedia audio controller: Platform Technologies, Inc.:
Unknown device 0100 (rev 10)
       Subsystem: Unknown device 1285:1010
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
       I/O ports at e800

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Tseng Labs Inc ET6000 (rev 70)
Flags: slow devsel, IRQ 11
       Memory at fd000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
       I/O ports at c800
     ...

the maestro doc in the kernel src tree tells me that the sound chip is
indeed an ESS Maestro AGOGO (looking at the 0100 device id and a 1285
pci id).

so after reading the sound docs from the 2.2.17 kernel i built the
required sound modules into the kernel (CONFIG_SOUND=y and
CONFIG_SOUND_MAESTRO=y were the only options selected in the 'sound'
section of make config)

after rebooting, the kernel reports back on bootup:

     ...
     maestro: version 0.14 time 16:36:06 Sep 10 2000
maestro: Configuring ESS Maestro found at IO 0xE800 IRQ 10
     maestro: subvendor id: 0x10101285
     maestro: not attempting power management.
maestro: my goodness! you seem to have a pt101 codec, which is
quite rare.
you should tell someone about this.
     maestro: 1 channels configured.
     ...

and indeed the /dev/dsp device is available (i can do `echo "" >
/dev/dsp` and it doesnt complain about no such device). however, when i
try to use the device, by playing a cd, catting au/wavs to /dev/dsp
there is nothing coming out of the speakers (and yes, i have plugged the
speakers into the card :)

the /proc fs seems to think that its there also
     /proc/devices
         Characeter devices:
         ...
         14 sound
         ...

     /proc/ioports
         ...
         e800-e8ff
         ...

     /proc/interrupts
         ...
         10: 1 XT-PIC ESS Maestro
         ...

i would be very grateful if someone could help me out with this one and
point out anything that is obviously wrong - i've been trying to sort
this out for a little while now without much success :(

thanks in advance
ray

twenty cents! it's difficult to pay even a tenth of that. consider a
top-of-the-line 9GB SCSI at $300, that's 3 cents per megabyte. a good
EIDE costs about 1 cent per megabyte. thus your statement is even
more powerful.

> A little
> forthought now (read: A little more generosity in partition sizing) just

yes yes yes

that's why i do 4 partitions.

/boot around 20MB
/ at least 2GB
/home whatever is left
<swap> 128MB (adjust to need/taste)

then you make decent backups. a good backup regimen is the best
insurance against any disaster.

with a dozen small partitions, i found i would run out of space in one
but have plenty left in various others. this was annoying.

a user filling the / partition (with /tmp in it) or filling /tmp is
nearly the same disaster.

Run wvdial the first time as "root". I believe that will
set up the correct pap/cap-secrets files. After that just
ignore any warnings/errors that wvdial prints out when run
