I received direct advice via email from David and it solved my
problems.
What was needed was properly formatted configuration files:
/etc/sysconfig/network:
NETWORKING=yes
# HOSTNAME does not have to include the
# domain.com part but it can if you want to.
HOSTNAME=linuxpc.domain.com
GATEWAY=192.168.0.129
GATEWAYDEV=eth1
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:
#Configuration script for eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
#NETWORK=192.168.1.0
#BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
#GATEWAY=192.168.0.129
ONBOOT=yes
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1:
#Configuration script for eth1
DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.0.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
#NETWORK=192.168.0.0
#BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
#GATEWAY=192.168.0.129
ONBOOT=yes
/etc/resolv.conf:
nameserver 192.168.0.129 #ADSL Gateway
nameserver 10.0.0.1 #From ISP
nameserver 10.0.0.2 #From ISP
(My ISP is proxying the ADSL connection a bit further up the line so
therefore his DNS servers use private addresses too.)
Important entries:
BOOTPROTO=static
ONBOOT=yes
Set one of these wrong and it does not work.
Thanks David!

Works fine here. Matrox G400 MAX with Red Hat 7 straight out of the box.
Had no trouble at all with a G400 16 MB Single head with Red Hat 6.2.

Subject: Mandrake 7.2 and KDE?
Date: 7 Jan 2001 16:49:35 GMT
Does the current version of Mandrake 7.2 include the release
version of KDE? The Mandrake web site isn't clear, though it
says 'latest' version of KDE. I found 7.2 for sale in Staples
but the box says KDE Beta. I have a slow dial-up and unreliable
ISP so would prefer to get everything on the original CDs, not
have to DL upgrades, patches, etc. later.
If there is a version with the release KDE where can I get it -
preferablely the boxed version with manuals and on-line?
TIA

No answer, just a question... I don't know digital cameras. I'm still
using a 35mm reflex and I scan the pictures at 600 dpi. Each picture is
about 25 to 30 Mb in file size. Makes great printouts on photo paper with
a regular inkjet printer.
My question: is it possible to take pictures with a digital camera as if
someone was having a 1600 ASA (or more) color film?

AFAIK it is supported with XFree86 4.0.2. So just choose a distro with
this version of X - or upgrade after the installation.
If you want to install it manually, you can get it at www.xfree86.org.

It's not too "unobjective" to say that:
a) KDE has a much better web browser program than GNOME in
"konqueror."
b) GNOME's spreadsheet package, "gnumeric," is considerably more
mature than KDE's spreadsheet, "kspread."
c) _BOTH_ systems suffer significantly from the fact that they are
still, to some extent, in the "design" phase.
One notable thing they can suffer from is "dueling libraries,"
where library functionality varies from version to version since
the library is undergoing active development and so some apps may
be incompatible with older libraries, while other apps may be
incompatible with newer libraries.
With KDE, throw in the consideration that the ABI for C++ and for
G++ in particular has not yet settled down. As a result,
applications and libraries compiled with different versions of G++
are likely not to interoperate. This provides a significant
incentive for you to recompile all your C++ code on your own
machine locally...

Subject: locked directory? No access rights as root?
Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 17:11:45 GMT
I've been using Linux-Mandrake 7.2 for a few weeks now. A couple days
ago, I tried adding a creative dvd decoder card with a passthrough cable
for my regular video card. Things seemed to be okay until I tried
accessing the cdrom. I get the error message that I "don't have the
access rights to this location". I then noticed the same thing with the
floppy. I used konqueror and the cdrom and floppy icons have little
padlocks on them. I tried accessing them as root to no avail. I looked
at my /etc/fstab file and it looks like I'm using supermount. I open
the cd tray place a cd in it, then click on the desktop cdrom icon and
the tray closes, lights go on, etc, then the same old message about not
having the rights. I tried creating another icon on the desktop- this
didn't work either. I removed the dvd decoder card and nothing's
changed. Is there a way to unlock these things? I'm a relative newbie
at this so any help is much appreciated.

Got the boot disk to work. Don't know why it didn't work before. The
commands were supposed to do the same thing.
FIRST (didn't work ) : 'mkbootdisk --device=/dev/fd0 2.2.14-1.5.0'
SECOND ( worked fine ) : 'mkbootdisk 2.2.14-1.5.0'
The mkbootdisk man page says that you can profide a device, or it will
default to /dev/fd0.
Strange!!!
Thanks for the replies.

First, if your data is exactly like your sample, the order is resolved
in the primary key; the secondary key is only used to resolve "ties"
in the primary key.
But the default delimiter for sort is a single blank space. So if your
file is tab-delimited, and contains no blank spaces, you don't have
any fields (or rather, each line is field 1.
Use the "-t" option to specify the tab character as the delimiter.
i.e. sort -t '<tab>' ...

Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 10:05:24 -0700
Thanks a lot everybody for your comments. I was able to fix the problem
by simply copying libstdc++.so.2.9 from another machine to
/usr/lib/ on the Debian machine and renaming it to
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 and then re-installing Java
Regards,
Sanjay Magal
Hello,
I downloaded JDK 1.3 for Linux from www.javasoft.com and followed
their instructions for installing Java on a linux machine.
Following is the output from %uname -a
on this machine"
Linux ndd 2.2.15 #1 Thu Jun 1 10:47:16 EST 2000 i686 unknown
I also set the environment variable for JAVA_HOME, in this case
JAVA_HOME=$HOME/jdk1.3
export JAVA_HOME
and PATH="$HOME/jdk1.3/bin:$PATH"
so that when i do %which java or %which javac, i get back
/home/magal/jdk1.3/bin/java
/home/magal/jdk1.3/bin/javac etc.
However, when i actually try to compile some Java code or
run a Java class, i run into problems. Looks like the Java Virtual machine
doesn't get initialised or something, for example i get the following:
%javac MonitorServer.java
/home/magal/jdk1.3/bin/i386/native_threads/javac: error in loading shared
libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No
such
file or directory
I compiled the code on another machine and got the .class file, then
%java MonitorServer
/home/magal/jdk1.3/bin/i386/native_threads/java: error in loading shared
libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No
such
file or directory
I cannot figure out what's going on. Am i missing something obvious or
is there something specific that needs to be configured.
Has anybody run into this problem before? Any comments,
suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a Chinese HOWTO on http://www.linuxdoc.org. Check that

should let you use Chinese out of the box. I recommend you to

You seem to be a bit inconsistent about what you did the first time.
According to the man page for mkbootdisk in my RH6.2 system, there
shouldn't be an '=' in specifying the device.

i like slrn. it's definately one of the best. test based,
scriptable, score-file (much better than a kill-file).
if you are into emacs, try gnus. i found that the transition from
slrn to gnus was reasonably easy (a lot in slrn is based on gnus). as
an aside, i confess i found gnus to be totally inscrutible before
using slrn.
