Attempting to install SCO's Tarantella software. The install fails with
some non-speciffic error messages: statuscirc/read/eof
I've looked at SCO's web site and this gnerally points to running out of
resources. If anyone here knows about this or suggestions as to what
and/or how to tune, it wold be appreciated.

Subject: kernel compiling problem
Date: 18 Sep 2000 16:03:29 GMT
There are three problems when I compiled the kernel 2.2.17
for redhat 6.2 linux. First problem is I don't know how to
generate the module-info file for the new kernel. The second
problem is I cann't mount the windows 98 disks any more, the
new kernel complain the major and minor device number of the
windows partitions, although I selected the dos and vfat file
system support when configuring the kernel. The last problem is
I could not find the sound support module for the ESS SOLO
from the new kernel, the original kernel from redhat can
support this sound card.
Thank you in advance for your insights!

Aha! I was missing a few options.
Needed "rw,username=bruce,uid=bruce,guest"
Now it boots up ready to go, both for "bruce" and "root".

where there is a list of the options for the .Xdefault file? I've searched
the FAQ's, etc. As in a set up Mwm*
The man remains lesstif, though I removed it...
That and what is the best binary rpm version, there seems to

Why waste money on an extra cable, when you are only going to have
to get a hub later would be a better question. Did you read my post?

That's debatable. A couple of weeks ago, I was in CompUSA and I saw they
had some house brand NICs (using RTL chipsets). The 10Mbps model was $10
and the 10/100Mbps model was $15. For $10 for two NICs, I'd go for the
10/100 boards. You certainly don't need that speed if you just use
telnet, but if you ever want to transfer big files (as you would when
backing up one computer using a tape drive on another, for instance),
then the 10/100 cards will make a big difference. It'll also make a
noticeable difference in at least some X applications, if you use one
system as an X server for programs run on the other.

What information? That it couldn't find a SCSI driver? My system boots
from SCSI!!! It will boot from the CD-ROM!!!
So to get cdrecord to work, I need to load yet another SCSI module, even
though SCSI is built into the kernel!?! What's up with that? Where do
I obtain this module?
Better yet, is there another CD burning application out there that's
less flaky than this one?

I have an application (curses based) that is accessed on
remote terminals connected to the server thru a multi port
serial controller (which defines several tty's in
/etc/inittab).
When the system boots, I want to be able to login specific
users and run this application automatically without any
user input i.e. the curses based program shows up on the
remote station ready for user input.
I am wondering how this could be done using the
/etc/inittab and /etc/gettydefs files.

I've got a couple of Macintosh computers networked through my SuSE 6.4
Linux box (x86). They use it as their mail/news server, Netatalk shared
drive, the usual stuff. I'm planning on adding a CD writer to the Linux
box to replace the CD drive (which is starting to fail). The question
is, can I burn Macintosh native CD's (ie bootable System disks) or is
this not possible at the moment?
TIA

Yes, you can do it. I do one a week on my local net.
Burning a CD is just the same as for an ISO, but you should note that
to mount a Mac native CD you will need to use the `hfs' type (and
therefore have support for it in your kernel). The mkhybrid utility
is useful for creating HFS/ISO hybrid CDs too.

Cool - but how would I get the data off the Mac? Sorry if this is a
naive question but I'm just trying to understand the logistics of it
all. The machines are networked and Netatalked. Could you give me a
quick example of creating a CD that contains, say, my current System
Folder + my current Jim folder? (Only if you have time, of course!)
