Check /var/log/messages: chances are that it doesn't like something
about your zone files. There are big changes between 8 & 9. The most
likely cause is a missing TTL. Read the "migration" docs in
/usr/share/doc/bind-xxxx.

i remember running X on sparcstation2 with 8MB of RAM. that sucked.
X took all 8MB and left no room for any application.

yes, but pentium boards are probably needing EDO RAM. that's not as
cheap or available anymore. so it's hopping from one obsolete system
to one only slightly less obsolete.
either stick with what you have or go buy something reasonably new.

Why? You do not need IDE-CD support at all if you have ide-scsi going.
Try taking that line out.

So what are their permissions? /dev/scd* should probably be 644, since
that interface is read-only in the general case. /dev/sg* should be 644
as well, and you should "chmod 4755 `which cdrecord` " since it's a bad
idea to do things as root when you can do them as a normal user.

Hmm. What are the permissions on /sbin/insmod ? They should be 755;
insmod does a check on the calling process's EUID and makes sure that
the caller has the right privileges.

A simple question, but with a difficult answer:
What are the packages that need to be installed in order to use GNOME?
And I don't mean the the actual dependencies. I know you can get those just by
typing "rpm -qRp gnome*.rpm". The problem with this approach is that many of
the dependencies listed
are located in rpm's that have completed different names! No matter where I
look I cannot find a simle list of
exactly which rpm's I need to install to put GNOME and all of its necessary
dependencies on my system.
Does anyone know?

I recently upgraded a RH 7.0 machine with a correclty functioning Star
Office 5.2 installation and a DJ682c printer to RH 7.1. Today I tried
for the first time to print from SO and the print came out in a very
small fixed font with light blue-green ghosting slightly offset to the
black letters, in some cases the ghosting was there but not the black
at all. I tried changing to an older driver (cdj550 instead of
cdj670) with printtool and also tried changing the font within SO to
courier, the printer output remained the same. I can print ascii text
and the RH printtool postscript test page with no trouble. Has anyone
else encountered this? Any suggestions for a fix?

Note that there's also a program called "Ifile" which collects
statistics on what has been previously filed into folders, and which
comes up with quite decent guesses as to where new email should be
filed. Specifically designed for use with MH/EXMH...

The "canonical" method for this is to set up a .maildelivery file, and
direct messages through /usr/lib/mh/slocal, to use the .maildelivery
rules.
For instance, here's an excerpt:
# Connection logs
Subject "Portfolio Valuation" | ? "/usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +StockStuff"
Subject "Connect Log" | ? "/usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +Logs"
# Family stuff...
>From "dmbrowne" | ? "/usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +Brownes/Dave"
>From "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" | ? "/usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +Brownes/Brad"
>From "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" | ? "/usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +Brownes/Dad"
>From "browne" | ? "/home/cbbrowne/bin/ifilter.family"
>From "Browne" | ? "/home/cbbrowne/bin/ifilter.family"
The crucial part here is the "rcvstore" lines; basic idea is that the
messages get filed into appropriate folders by piping them into the
command:
/usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +WhateverFolder
If you're using procmail, you'll have to open pipes to rcvstore rather
than using its native "folder support," because procmail folders are
_not_ MH folders.
Procmail provides more sophisticated filtering options than MH's
maildelivery file offers, but I've not found .maildelivery to be
_inadequate_.

It varies from distribution to distribution, to some extent.
Furthermore, GNOME isn't a fixed application; it's a set of
applications and libraries, so that the set of dependancies depends on
which GNOME applications you plan to run.
You may want to look at the Ximian GNOME "Red Carpet" or "Installer"
application; it has an installer set up for several Linux
distributions, along with a dependancy list for the system you're
using. With that, you'd install a few RPMs first, to get the
Installer running, and can then use the Installer to pull whatever
other packages are needed.

My install still works, it's a bare-bone system with an IDE disk/CD

any special hw, running in text mode only, so transplant-drives do
work.

It likely comes from the fact that few PCs are being sold anymore with
less than 128MB of RAM. And RHAT is _not_ mainly in the business of
selling distributions to people planning to run Linux on spectacularly
obsolete equipment. They're trying to sell to, for instance:
-> People wanting to run GNOME on the desktop,
-> People building web servers that integrate with Oracle.
No insult intended, but your plan to run a firewall on hardware of the
mid '90s just doesn't fit into RHAT's business plan. You're not a
market for them, not even a photon.
There certainly _are_ distributions suited for building firewalls on
hardware of ancient provenance; you just have to make sure you're
comfortable with going down a road that is not spelled "Red Hat," or,
for that matter "Commercial Support."

Hi,
I'm searching the c.o.l.m. archives, but haven't found anything yet...
Anyway, none of the control-key sequences (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-X, etc.) are
working in either bash (version 2.05) or in X. The Ctrl key does
absolutely nothing; if I hit Ctrl-C, it types 'c'. I was wondering if
anyone knows how to fix this.
Thanks,
Stephen.
