Doesn't this, '2>&1', combine stderr (output) with stdout?
According to "Unix Power Tools" [47.21] '2>&1' means "send
standard error (file descriptor 2) to the same place standard
output (file descriptor 1) is going". Don't think that is what
the original poster had in mind.
I routinely build kernels with "make zImage 2>&1 | tee mk1.out".
Of course this is with Bourne (bash); I want to see and record
everything.

Was just looking at this yesterday. On my Slakware4.0 it is in the
file /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root, which you must look at as root. Below is
a copy which should give you some ideas:
# If you don't want the output of a cron job mailed to you, you have to direct
# any output to /dev/null. We'll do this here since these jobs should run
# properly on a newly installed system, but if they don't the average newbie
# might get quite perplexed about getting strange mail every 5 minutes. :^)
#
# Run the 'atrun' program every 5 minutes
# This runs anything that's due to run from 'at'. See man 'at' or 'atrun'.
0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * /usr/lib/atrun 1> /dev/null 2>
/dev/null
# This touches a filename in the temp directory so that you can see cron is
# working if the timestamp is current. Comment it out if it bugs you. :^)
# * * * * * touch /tmp/.crond_running
# Flush stale POP3 files every 15 minutes:
5,20,35,50 * * * * /usr/sbin/flushpop.sh 1> /dev/null 2> /dev/null
(The line which starts with 0,5,10 is one line, but I had to wrap it for
this email.)

The "something" it says is that gcc 2.95 is still reckoned a
bit risky for compiling the kernel, though it's getting closer.
gcc 2.7.2.3 does the job fine.

Hi folks.
I have a Maxtor 94098U6 in my Linux box, which is not recognized with
its correct size. My Linux Version is 2.2.10
LIHB-102:~ # uname -a
Linux LIHB-102 2.2.10 #28 Tue Jul 20 19:25:30 MEST 1999 i686 unknown
In the boot.msg file, the disk seems to be correctly configured as a 40GB
IDE
disk.

<4>PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later

When I try to configure it with fdisk I only get 6991456 blocks:
LIHB-102:~ # fdisk /dev/hdc
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 13872.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 13872 cylinders

Command (m for help):
The filesystem I created is also 7GB:

Can anybody tell me how to configure the disk to have the missing 33GB
available.

Are you SURE that the path indicatedon the first line of `cpanel.cgi'
is valid? I've seen this error before, and it is caused by either a
typo ...
#!/usr/bin/prel
... or the path points to a file that doesn't exist ...
#!/this/is/not/the/right/directory/to/find/perl
I recently "fixed" a problem like this where the script was looking
for perl in `/usr/local/bin/perl'. We had Perl installed on the
machine; it was at `/usr/bin/perl'. Adding a symbolic link in
`/usr/local/bin' fixed the problem.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This is beginning to drive me nuts. My two serial ports don't work with
Debian 2.2 - setserial always returns "Input/output error," even when I try
just the -g parm, or with autoconfig. stty returns the same thing. The
hardware is fine, since it works with SuSE 6.4 and various versions of
lesser OSs. CMOS setup verifies that serial ports are setup correctly,
using conventional default settings.
/var/log/dmesg shows...
Serial driver version 4.27 with no serial options enabled
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
Serial ports are, I believe, "16550A equivalent," (ASUS P3B-F motherboard)
and the settings shown in dmesg are correct. Serial driver is loaded, and
(default Debian install) kernel looks like it supports serial. (I tried
removing CONFIG_SERIAL_NONSTANDARD=y, for yucks, but no difference.)
I get exactly the same result when I disable the onboard serial ports
and try a four-port FlexPort, though the FlexPort also works under other
OSs. Also the same when I boot harddisk from a different (identical)
machine.
I'm SURE that this is something real simple, but I've read the Serial HOWTO
from cover to cover, but got no clues. Disregarding the serial problem,
BTW, I couldn't be happier with Debian. Can anyone help me figure this out?
Thanks...

Man you are insane! ;-) Being a recent convert from OS/2 myself I have
gravitated to Mandrake but since I really have taken a shine to KDE I ended
up compiling the KDE 2 packages myself to get the unvarnished stuff...
Classically you would get the RPM 4 pcakcage for RH, RPM 3.05 package for
Mandrake and the apt-get for CLOS. (yeesh)
In OS/2 you could make shadows in PM shell. In linux you can make links all
the way down in the files system. Frankly that is cooler. What you need to
do (I think) is (besides choose something ;) pick a directory you can share
like /usr/local and put your shared apps there. Here is how it works.
1) pick a place to be home to your shared programs (as well as one for
shared data)
2) from each of your distros this need to have an empty directory (or just
choose a directory to dump it in) to house your shared programs. Link to
your shared directory.
3) where ever you are running your files from like /usr/bin in Mandrake
create a link to the executable in your linked directory.
Now your programs will run from the same executable in all distros. There
is still the configurations. Linux does not have extended attributes but
uses dot files. For Netscape it is $HOME/.netscape and here is what would
be in EAs and ini files. You can copy it and nsmail and you are good to go,
but you will not have identical data and bookmarks. I have tried to do this
with links and for some reason Netscape didn't like it. You could try
mounting your alternate home directories and using a shell script to update.
For my part Ihave come to find KDE 2 knoqueror much less of a hog than
Netscape and prefer it for browsing. On the page that explains running both
at the KDE site is the clue on how to really make identical desktops. Just
add this to your start up....
export KDEHOME=$HOME/.kde2 -> this can be any directory... then again once
you've done that what difference is all the distros? ;-)
BTW if you do web work check out our web editor. it's in my signature line
at the bottom.

Subject: Why is this happening?
Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 09:28:03 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Greetings fellow linux heads,
I've encountered a new occurance on my Red Hat 6.2 machine and I am not
sure why it is happening. When linux boots up it reaches a point where
it starts counting down (for about 15 seconds) and asks whether or not I
would like the computer to enter linuxconf mode. If I enter linuxconf
mode, it gives me a screen which shows a list of configuation options
such as 'Graphics & Text mode', 'maintenance mode', etc. If I don't
enter linuxconf mode, it just continues to countdown and eventually
resumes its normal boot sequence.
I'm not sure why this is happening. Perhaps it is the result of an
update that I did on my box (either a redhat security update or a
helix-gnome update), or I think that it could be because I recently
replaced the CDROM on my computer, and linux wants me to configure the
the new CDROM with my system. The new CDROM isn't anything different
from my old one, and it works so I'm not sure if this is the case or
not.
Is anyone familiar with this boot-time occurance? Is it something normal
that I can ignore or is linux asking me to update its configuration?
OK, now here is something else interesting that keeps occuring that I
also think may have to do with the fact that I recently replaced my
CDROM. When I run the 'dmesg ' command, I no longer get the boot-up
information that the command is supposed to supply. Instead I receive
the following message:
VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0)
VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0)
VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0)
This also seems to indicate that I need to update my configurations to
inform linux of the new CDROM. However, I'm not really sure if that is
what the message is saying. Furthermore, I'm not sure what action to
take update my configurations if I need to. Does anyone know what this
message means? What should I do to correct this, and get back the
regular 'dmesg' output?
Any help and/or advice with these issues is greatly appreciated. Thanks
in advance to all who reply.

Do you know if fsck had to do any repairs the first time it ran?
You may have corrupted some files that Linux needs.
You may have to use the boot floppy to do a back-up of your user files
and then reinstall Linux.
