Wait at least a day or two for replies. Traffic on this group is
heavy. Most of us don't read it every day. maybe no-one knows the
answer. (BTW, Being overly demanding of an answer or reposting too
quickly is considered rude IMHO and will -decrease- the chance of

Hello,
I'm trying to install Redhat 6.2 on a machine which is currently running
NT Server 4.0. I'm trying to install from a CD. I put the CD in the
machine and reboot. Everything begins OK, it reads the CD at startup
and I get the first installation screen. I then press <ENTER> and the
following information is displayed (there are a few lines missing off
the top which I can't quite catch):
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
Linux version 2.2.14-5.0BOOT ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version
egcs-2.9
1.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)) #1 Tue Mar 7 20:31:32 EST 2000

Calibrating delay loop... 199.07 BogoMIPS

1416k data, 60k init, 0k bigmem)
general protection fault: 0000
CPU: 0
Then there's some stack information and a Call Trace and finally:
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In swapper task - not syncing
And than it just hangs. I have no idea what the problem is. I don't
know much about the machine (it's just an extra one at work) other than
it seems to run NT without any difficulty. Since my intention is to let
hte installation program reformat the drive and start over and since the
machine seems to run NT without any difficulty I can't imagine that I
shouldn't be able to install Linux, but I'm stuck? Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

It's when your boot counter reaches a certain number, set in the kernel I
think, an fsck of each mount is performed. It is a good thing. Don't attempt
to short circut it.
You can use the ReiserFS. Do a google search on it to find out more, or check
in at the SuSE web site.

Why copy anything over?
Just mount it as a new partition, say "/opt2" or something like that.
It is save to copy any directories that you have made and populated, provided
that you modify your path and other env variables to reflect the changes.

Though I hope to convert to Linux, I have a carcass of IE browser files
that represent many hour$ of modem time, I dare not tell IE its location
lest it get mangled. I used nfatcw [web-search to get it] from Japan as
it usually works but cryptically, however it says that the data file is
too big and quits.
Many of the off line cache explorer software are for reading the current
'temporary internet files' file only, but I want to point them to various
carcasses and snapshots of the TIF I make, as I found IE5.5 often
mysteriously wipes its cache out even though I set many gigs as the limit.
Perhaps there is even an emacs tool to do this, e.g., I hear even the beta
of gnus [www.gnus.org] can read OExpress DBX files, see article

Hi all.
I'm having problems with ftp on my linux boxes.
I have 2 boxes (a and b).
I can ftp from a to b but not from b to a.
I copied the following files from a to b, so a=b
inetd.config
hosts
rebooted both machines then from b I type:
ftp <DNS of a> and get the message:
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection
Still no ftp from b to a.
does anyone have any idea of what I'm missing or doing wrong?
all I want to do is have my two machines ftp to each other.
I know I can get away with ftp'ing in only one direction and use get or
put depending on the direction of the transfer, but i still want both
machines to have the same capabilities.
Any assistance will be appreciated

The extfs filesystem has maximum number of time it can be mounted before
a file system check is forced, default is 20. There is nothing to fix,
you can view the file system parameters with dumpe2fs and tune2fs. Read
the man pages and heed the warnings.

I don't know what RP3 is, I have a script that dials,
gets my mail and news then disconnects. It goes something
like this:
/sbin/ifup ppp0 ## try this from the command line to connect
# sleep 45s ## you may need this, I did on an older version of RH
pullall ## my own script that pulls mail and news
/sbin/ifdown ppp0 ## then this to disconnect.
You might need to change the permissions on ifup.

First, I have found that the multitasking of linux is far superior to Win,
if you like dabbelling in development it's heaven, it comes with so much
stuff that will work well, like GCC, perl, and the list goes on. For me
X seems slower than Win95 was, but I tend to do almost everything in an
xterm or rxvt window these days, and everything is so configurable.
With linux I like the feeling of being in controle of what I can and can't
do, which is something that I didn't find with Windows. And it's so
stable, I really hammer the CPU with raytracing and various other activities,
and the last two times that I've had to restart have been because of
power failures in the house, today my dad trying to fix something, and the
time before that me knocking the switches in the fuse cupboard. See some
of my posts from yesterday they all have the current uptime of this system
stamped on them.
I havn't used Win95 since last November, and have only been using linux since
(yes you've guessed it), last November, for me it was love at first site,
so I formatted the drive and gave all my M$ software to worthy causes (I know,
that was cruel).

Once you've got everything set up properly you'll very rarely have to use
su, and it's good to keep it like that because you're safer that way. On
Win95 you're logged in as root all the time, (no wonder they have to format
and reinstall 5 times a month).

If you're buying pirate CDs of RH 5.2 you're being ripped off, I bought my
RH 6.2 CD officially (not pirate), for the price of a pint of beer (just a
bit more than half a litre).
Keep reading the documentation, and get a book if you can, O'reilly's Running

At the lilo prompt get into the single user mode and reinstall lilo and

lilo: linux single

Red Hat has a "QuickStart" scheme that allows you to configure a disk
with a list of packages/parameters to drop into place if you're doing
mass installs.
And you might look at <http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/>:
"We present a non interactive system, called FAI (Fully Automatic
Installation), to install a Debian Linux operating system on a PC
cluster.
We take one or more virgin PCs, turn on the power and after a few
minutes Linux is installed, configured and running on the whole
cluster, without any interaction necessary. In addition, the
configuration can be changed automatically on all Linux cluster
nodes. Thus we have a scalable method for installing and updating a
cluster with little effort involved."
Uses Debian, some shell scripts, some Perl, and does system
configuration using cfengine.
>* Automated hardware detection and installation during the automated
>OS install.
Hmmm...
As far as detecting devices is concerned, this typically takes place
each time the kernel boots, and if there's a good set of kernel
modules in /lib/modules, this works pretty well for a pretty wide
variety of hardware.
Automagically partitioning disks of varying size may be a bit more
"challenging," although I expect that both "QuickStart" and "FAI" cope
with that. I've not had call for either, so you'll need to look to
that yourself...
>* Scheduled and automated application installation, removal, and
> configuration.
Red Hat (and likely its near clones) offers a tool called "AutoRPM"
that can look for and automagically upgrade packages according to your
favorite rule set. Debian (and friends) has "apt-get" which does much
the same.
A good approach for just about _any_ of these systems is to have a
central directory on one server that contains upgrades, and to have a
cron job on the remote systems that checks for packages in that
location, installing anything new.
The "central directory" could be accessed via HTTP, FTP, or NFS;
that's your call :-).
I'd think that cfengine would be a _natural_ tool to use to push out
the combination of configuration/utilities to ensure that this
happens.

Both of these things represent the sorts of things that would likely
be implemented by a set of Your Own Software to collect/produce the
customized sorts of information appropriate to Your environment and
policies.
You should most certainly have a central "NFS" mount from which remote
hosts can pull central information; it should be read-only so that it
is _CAREFULLY_ controlled as it has a whole lot of influence on how
all the machines out there work.
It would also be good to have another, distinctly separate, NFS mount
to which remote hosts could periodically submit "inventory."
information.
In theory, the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) was designed
to allow collecting this sort of information; in practice, it seems to
be quite a lot of trouble to actually _use_ SNMP.

Definitely the nearest thing to this latter thing is cfengine.
<http://www.iu.hioslo.no/cfengine/>
Run, don't walk to find it. It is a language/engine designed with
your requirements specifically in mind. It doesn't "do it all" out of
the box; you have to write up scripts/rules to describe how your
systems are intended to work.

Lots of relevant links at the URL below.

Linux is like a Vorlon. It is incredibly powerful, gives terse,
cryptic answers and has a lot of things going on in the background.

The issue relates more to the age of your motherboard than anything
else.
Old motherboard --> It's guaranteed to be a problem;
Newer design --> Less likely problematic.
The way to _guarantee_ that it's a non-issue is to have the kernel
reside in the /boot partition, and to have that be a small partition,
defined to entirely reside within the legal cylinder limit.
That is, one of your first partitions will be a small one that you use
for either /boot, or perhaps /.

Have you checked your hosts.allow and hosts.deny files on each
machine.

Sounds like the font server, xfs, is not running. check that the font
server is running, do 'ps -aux' and look for xfs. If it is not running ,
try restarting it from the command line with '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs
start'. Note any error messages, sometimes a stale lock file in
/var/lock/subsys will prevent it from startiing.

When looking for RPM's, I would recommend www.rpmfind.net. They have
RPM's of almost all Linux programs.
