Isn't that normally ".srpm"? ANyway, why do you want to compile your
own?

That's not a srpm.
> I just got the following error: " File Is Not A Regular File"
I don't know how to use rpm (I don't), but everytime I've made
an install from a srpm, rpm -i has put it in /usr/src/redhat/somwehere,
and it's just then a question of finding the spec file and running
rpm -bc on it.
Not that I'd want to. But reading the spec file and looking at the
patches is sometimes illuminating.

Then it sounds like you munged them. Downloaded binary files using ftp

I have a "bookshelf" 166MHz pentium with no frills. I'd like to set it
up as a server with no direct console - ie access it through ttyS1 (or
better yet from an x-window across the network but I don't know how to
do that yet...).
Anyway - I can set the hardware up not to stall in the absence of a
keyboard and mouse, but what file edits must I make to stop the
operating system from complaining that they're not there on boot?

Try running cdrecord -scanbus.... see if you burner pops up.... also, you may
just have a bad set of blank cds...

I was seeking the more open minded of Linux folks. Hey, even libertarians
could propose legislation, such as to outlaw user tracking on the
Internet. Don't expect the bought and paid for politicians to do it.

When I do 'free -m' I get a memory report
video:~> free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 251 196 55 33 26 126
even though my box should be mainly idle (196MB is an awful lot of
memory do be doing nothing more than running X, emacs and a few
services).
So when I do ps to try and sniff out the problem I get no major users.
I awk out the 4th column (%MEM) and add them up I get 21.9% usage
which is only 56MB accounted for.
Any thoughts?

It's using most of it (126M) as disk cache.
If you _really_ don't want your Linux system to use all that
RAM, yank half of it and send it to me. ;)

No worries. Linux does a good job of deciding how to use RAM.
If you need some of that 126M for programs, Linux will use less
of it for caching disk blocks. Until then, be relax and happy
you've got that much RAM.

Subject: How to update glibc to 2.2?
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 00:26:55 GMT
Hi, all
I met a circle problem when updating glibc from 2.1.92-14 to 2.2-12.
(I have installed Redhat 7.0 and need update the glibc)
The following is the log:
#rpm -i glibc-common-2.2-12.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
glibc < 2.2-12 conflicts with glibc-common-2.2-12
#rpm -Fvh glibc-2.2-12.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
glibc-common = 2.2 is needed by glibc-2.2-12
/usr/bin/getent is needed by stunnel-3.8-4
Here comes the problem:
glibc 2.2 needs glibc-common 2.2 to install, but glibc-common 2.2
cannot be installed unless glibc is of version 2.2
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

To update something like glibc you have to use the --nodeps and
maybe the --force option for rpm. but be careful soemthing could
break, usually recompiling will fix if it does.

http://linux-usb.org/ and sniff around. Support for USB interfaces is
in kernel 2.2.18 and kernel 2.4.0; many distros shipped kernels with
backported USB support that works pretty well. The problem is that not
every device with a USB plug is supported, though devices that conform
to the published specs for USB Mass Storage Devices should work.
PCMCIA CD-RWs should work like regular SCSI devices, provided the PCMCIA
SCSI adapter you have is supported. Check the PCMCIA-HOWTO at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ and see what you can find.

The floppy is now accessible under /mnt/floppy. The "-t vfat" mounts
the MS-DOS floppy with support for long file names, or you can change
the order the "auto" option you probably have specified in /etc/fstab
probes filesystems by editing /etc/filesystems and making sure "vfat"
is before "msdos" and then MS-DOS floppies will be mounted with long
filename support by default. Of course, you have to remember to umount
the thing before ejecting the disk. HTH,

in the files I type
%files

/usr/local/bluefish-0.6/bin/bluefish
after the compilation and everthing I see a message saying that it was

Subject: unresolved symbols with modules

I just got a RedHat6.2 distro installed on a dual boot (NT & Linux)
machine. Since the stock kernel 2.2.14-5 did not have support for NTFS I
recompiled the kernel, edited lilo.conf etc. However, when I boot up I
get loads of unresolved symbol messages. The messages appear to be
originating from the stock kernel, which was 2.2.14-5.0smp. All
unresolved symbol messages refer to a path with that kernel version in
it.
I figure this has something to do with System.map and/or module-info,
both links pointing to stuff from the original kernel. I know there is a
new System.map file in /usr/src/linux and that file was copied to /boot.
Then the link from System.map was changed to point to the new System.map
file, this however didn't appear to take hold, after rebooting I still
got all the unresolved symbol messages and looking at the link of
System.map it was reset to point to the original smp kernel again.
Any help to fix this is appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

This is *NOT* the same problem, unless the original poster has an Athlon
in his laptop (wow). The kernel thinks (incorrectly) that you have a
PIII, and is attempting to disable the PIII serial number. Since the
Athlons don't have serial numbers, this attempt causes a hideous crash
soon after boot. The fix is to pass the kernel the parameter
"x86_serial_nr=1" (NSS about the exact spelling, Deja is being
uncooperative even though I know this has been posted within the last
month.)

Ok, thanks for the reassuring response. My darkest fear was that some
hacker had planted a root kit on my system and hacked the ps command to
hide its presence.
What is the RAM disk cache? Is this the flip side of virtual memory,
caching frequently accessed hard drive memory into RAM?
Thanks,

Subject: Is Debian RPM compatible ?

I read somewhere that certain Linux distributions are RPM compatible while
others aren't.
The Debian Linux web site does not mention anything about RPM compatibility.
Is Debian Linux distribution RPM compatible?
Has anyone installed RPM's in a Debian distribution?
Does RPM stand for "RehHat Package Manager" or "RPM Package Manager?
