I get the following error on boot, and I think it may be related to my
printer not being detected by printtool:
Modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.2.16/modules.dep
The file DOES exist, and is readable by everyone. What is causing the
error? How can I correct it? Could it have anything to do with printtool
not being able to detect my printer (yes, parport.o exists, and kernel
support for parallel printing was enabled)?

make sure you got the correct rpm for you architecture.
There are rpm's for i386, for i686, for sparc, for alpha, for ppc...

Windows 2000 is better than Windows NT or Windows 98 or Windows ME.
You will only find Windows on Intel or compatible Machines.
You will find linux on palmtop (wow! how did they fix X in there) to mainframe
(IBM S390) and maybe supercomputers.

You can't pirate Redhat, you can freely distribute it. Right now I am download
Redhat 7.0 from a download site.
(about twice as fast as dialup). I can copy it and give to friends with out
any legal problems.
I can also learn without paying big bucks:
Oracle on Linux: I am only using it for learning, that is ok as long as it is
non-commericial, Oracle even encourages download its software for
non-commerical use.
SQL Server on Windows 2000: Microsoft don't care if it for learning, you
still owe Microsoft big bucks. If you can prove you are from a school,
Microsoft may give you a discount.

If you want the basics of linux, get the Redhat 6.2 or Redhat 7.0 documentation
CD. It is chockful of how to's, faq, installation notes.

And what does "ls -l /dev/cdrom" tell you? It should be pointing to
/dev/hdc, as you indicated in an earlier post that your CD-ROM was
hooked up there. If it isn't, then you will get errors like that. You
can fix it with "ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom" if it's pointing to the
wrong place.
Also, is this a CD-R(W)? If so, you may need to use /dev/scd0 instead
of /dev/hdc, for reasons explained in the CD-Writing-HOWTO. I think it
would be a good idea to post the complete output of "dmesg" to this NG
since that could help someone help you.

For each user, the login shell is specified at the end of line. So it's
unlikely that this is the cause. The authentication fails at some point
which I don't where and how.

Since I don't scan stuff very often it's not a big issue. I'd hate to

I haven't had much problem here. I just finished recording all my Dean Martin
LPs (55 LPs) on CD and the results are excellent. I never had to reboot to winblows
to do anything except when I scanned some pictures to put on the CDs.
As I recalled my SuSE 7.0 package says that I have over 1800 applications.
So sotfware doesn't exist you say! What is the magic number for software
to start existing?

LaTeX is wonderful for these sorts of docs. LaTeX is actually fairly
easy to learn -- mainly because 90% of the special things you need
happen to be plain English words: \begin{centering} ... \end{centering}
-- begin, end, centering: you know what these words mean, right? How
about: \section{Introduction} and so on.
LaTeX is also just about the *only* system that *properly* formats
scientific expressions. This can be real important to Math, Physics,
and Chem. professors. Getting those pesky expressions just right can
make or break your grade point average...

Someone told me about alogin to allow for
automatic login.
This instructs you to modify the /etc/inittab as follows:
change
1;2345 respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttty1
to
1;2345 respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttty1 /bin/alogin
When I do, I get an error on bootup which says that the
system is respawning too fast and shutting it down for 5
minutes.
Any clue? The docs for alogin only talk about agetty, or
mgetty, but not mingetty.

Subject: Netscape Communicator upgrade to 4.75
Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 02:21:54 GMT
I use Mandrake 7.1 with Netscape Communicator 4.73. I downloaded new
Netscape Communicator 4.75 and installed it at '/opt/netscape'. Somehow
when I tried executing '/opt/netscape/netscape' it says:
// start capturing --
netscape: program is version 4.75, but resource are version 4.73.
This means that there is an inappropriate `Netscape' file installed
in the app-defaults directory. Check these environment variables
and the directories to which they point:
$XAPPLRESDIR
$XFILESARCHPATH
$XUSERFILESEARCHPATH
Also check for this file in your home directory, or in the
directory called `app-defaults' somewhere under /usr/lib/
//end capturing --
Is this mean the Netscape binaries are at '/usr/lib/netscape' and if it
is, can I upgrade or overwrite the NC 4.73 to 4.75 without screwing up
my whole system?

You might try this. Save your bookmarks.html file from your
.netscape directory. Then delete your .netscape directory.
Fire up /opt/netscape/netscape and see if the error goes away.
If not, then, in addition to the above, uninstall both versions
of Netscape. This should clean out things. Then re-install
the 4.75 version.
