Subject: Need an idea for a Heisenbug

I need an idea of how I go about eliminating a Heisenbug. I have
a routine which performs numerical calculations. [It inverts a matrix
by the method of partitions]. The routine will not perform correctly
unless I put a printf statement at the start. It doesn't matter what I
print, even printf("\n"); works. Without the statement the results
of the calculations as seen by the printout in another routine are
in error.
I have tried turning the optimizer off, and there is no change.
I have tried substituting additional dummy calculations to
move the following code to a higher address, and that doesn't
work. The printf is untidy, any ideas?
My compiler is:
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-slackware-linux/egcs-2.91.66/specs
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)

The agenda VR3 runs linux natively but not in color. The yopy (perhaps
should be named nopy) runs linux. Best I have seen is a ipaq running
familiar linux. I was at a lugfest and met a few of the folks responsible
for familiar linux. Very nice distribution and it will improve even more as
times goes on.
Other news is that it appears that HP and I think Sharp will do a Linux PDA
this year according to some news I have heard.
I have access to a IPAQ running Linux and its not too bad. My IPAQ still
runs that "other operating system" because I have a rather nice group of
games on it right now.

Subject: java rpm on mandrake 8
Hi
I downloaded the j2sdk from the sun website, and I downloaded the redhat
rpm(compatible with mandrake?), I run the sript and it produced an rpm
file for me. I then used :
rpm -i <package_name> and after a while I got the prompt back. Where do
I go from there?
When I type java or javac it is not recognized and I tried to use :
whereis java with no results...when i try to install it again the same
way it says already installed...
I guess I need to set some path variables? but I dont know how to do
that and I dont know where is the java folder...
Thanks

Actually I think you only needed to upgrade rpm to v 3.5,which probably
wouldn't have the dependencies you mentioned. Additonally after
installing your needed libs by tarball, did you try the `--nodeps' switch
when trying the rpm install again?

I always ran VNC in "screen scraper" mode as opposed to running
it as an X-Server under Unix. It seemed a bit slow that way,
but I spent 99% of my time with VNC running the server under
Win32 and the client under X11. You're right: there's no
reason that running VNC as an X server should be slow.

You should maybe try a newer distrobution. Newer distro's = easier
installation. At least Mandrake 7.2 or as with your USB modem problem a
distro with the 2.4 kernel (SuSE, Redhat 7, Mandrake 8)

To me, its not even about sability. Its about technological curiosity and
not being under Microsofts yearly hundred dollar upgrade schedule and
having to upgrade my hardware everytime too!

Strictly speaking that isn't possible unless you're running
with some fancy virtual volume manager thing enabled. You can,
however use the new filesystem for some of what is in the root
filesystem now.

Yes. You've already got a filesystem mounted at /. You can't
mount two filesystems in the same place.
>Anyway, help would be much appreciated.
You need to create an empty directory somewhere and mount your
new filesystem there.
# mkdir /mynewfs
# mount /dev/sdb7 /mynewfs
The easiest thing to do is to use the new filesystem as /usr or
/home something that is currently in your root filesystem. If
you want to do that (we'll assume /usr):
0) Change to single user mode:
# telinit 1
1) Mount new new fs someplace temporarily:
# mkdir /mnt/tmp
# mount /dev/sdb7 /mnt/tmp
2) Copy the existing /usr directory to the new filesystem:
# cd /usr
# cp -a * /mnt/tmp
or
# tar cf - . | (cd /mnt/tmp; tar xvf -)
3) Rename the old /usr directory just in case something is
wrong with the new one:
# mv /usr /usr.old
# mkdir /usr
4) Mount the new one
# umount /mnt/tmp
# mount /dev/sdb7 /usr
5) Edit /etc/fstab accordingly:
/dev/sdb7 /usr ext2 defaults 1 2
6) Reboot or exit to return to multi-user mode.
7) After the system has been in use for a while, and
everything seems OK, delete the old copy:
# rm -rf /usr.old

I don't think that Linux really cares if you use it or not. Linux is there

bzzt, wrong answer - reinstalling may be the
windows way of fixing problems, but it's not
the answer in the Unix world.
Look in the sys logs to find out what is

Starting up Mandrake 8 gives this message from the kernel. The problem is
that this message doesn't appear until *after* the login screen comes up.
It makes it look rather odd, printed on top of the login. Is there any way
to make it appear before the login or to disable it entirely? (Unless a
Winbond Super-IO card is a standard motherboard part, I don't have one).

I'm using Suse 6.3. I got the RPM of libjpeg b/c it would be the easiest
to find (although with RPM it would probably end up being the most difficult
to install). That seems to have been the case.

I had 3.0.3 before. Now I got 3.0.3 and 4.0.2 as well, neither will let
me install the libjpeg RPM.

You don't have a very good reading ability. I'm installing libjpeg
using RPM. I installed RPM by using a tarball ( so i wouldn't run into
the stupid catch22 with upgrading RPM and receiving the error above).
I don' thave a problem with dependencies. I have a problem with the
version of RPM i'm using compared to the version that was used to make
the libjpg RPM.....even though after moving to RPM 4.0.2 that problem
should have gone away. So why didn't it? what am i misssing?
Realiez I had no problem instaling RPM using the tarball. Im having the
trouble with installing libjpeg.so.62 with the RPM. (i've never succeeded
in using RPM. I'm stupid for thinking it should work now. IT's a piece of
shit in my opinion)
