You might also look into LyX, a GUI front-end to LaTeX. It (and its
cousin Klyx) does equations very well, exports as dvi, etc.

Well, tell us how you set up the system. Eg, what is the AutoPPP line in

You have pap or chap set up. HOw? What is the pppd debug output?

Well here is my resoning.

If / fills up it can be a real pain, so anything that can grow unchecked
I like to have a separate partition for. That means /var and /tmp and to a
lesser extent /home.

I also like to be able to completely reinstall the OS without doing
backups. That means /home and /usr/local should be considered. It helps
to de-couple your data and your OS.

I like to separate / and /usr cause /usr keeps getting bigger and bigger.
root probably has a speed benefit if it's small and you want to keep the
kernel which is in /boot under 1024 cyl.

I've never seen the use to have a /usr/src partition.

Given all this, I set stuff up roughly like this

/ 200 or 500 meg... why not
/usr 3 or 4 gig...boy is it getting big
/var 500 meg to 1 gig... long time for a attacker to fill
/tmp 500 meg to 1 gig... vi makes a tmp file, what if file is big?
/usr/local greater than 300 meg. Apps get big!
/home what ever is left over.

A 9 or 15 gig drive is perfect.

Of course I'll adust for specialized systems when I don't want to buy a
hard drive.

My little network probe laptop has only / and swap.

Yeah. Appearently, the 8255 parallel port chip has three 'error'
conditions:

        paper out
        printer off line
        error (unspecified).

It is this latter that gets the ' on fire' message.

the difference is a legal issue. someone owns the trademark "unix"
and you have to be approved (pay money, pass a test &c) to call your
operating system unix. computer-wise, there is about as much
difference amongst the various unices as their is between them and
linux.

I think it is probably a primarily caucasian genetic flaw. Just like
sickle-cell anemia is pramarily a problem for people of african descent.

Whether or not the colour blindness gene offers some evolutionary advantage
the way the sickle-cell gene does is a different matter.

What? Where? I don't recall seeing an OS that REQUIRED that you compile a
stable application in years... I've been using Linux for nearly 2 years and
I've NEVER *had* to compile anything. I've chosen to occasionally, but then,
linux is all about CHOICE.

Or have you never heard of .rpm and .deb?

As far as pap or chap goes I am not sure if or how they are set up. If
you can tell me what files or configurations to look at or what to look
for I can provide more information for you. I do not know what the
debug output is, but if you can explain to me in a few lines I will be

        Correct. You should define
#define  _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE    1
instead. This define should come before
including the header files. This will
enable the use of large files greater than
2 Gig. Unfortunately, user commands and utils
like ls(1) and stat(1) will not work: See the
        following:
# ls -l
/bin/ls: BIG4GIG: Value too large for defined data type
/bin/ls: BIG4GIG2: Value too large for defined data type
total 0

Both of these files are 4gigabytes large!!
I created them by a simple program that
wrote a large buffer to the file in a loop
that brought the size to 4 gig, and exited
        normally.

        Cheers,

        Joe

The XESS spreadsheet has been on Linux since 1994. The current version
handles Excel files up to Excel 97/2000 (Open, Save, and cross
workbook references). I don't know the university where you are
a TA or what version of XESS they are currently using. XESS 5.0 is
the lastest and most of our university sites received it under
our early ship program.

A commercial shrink-wrap edition is available through various
retail channels for under US$ 70, including two large printed
manuals. Versions are also available for most UNIX, VMS, and
Windows NT systems.

BTW October 19th will be the ten-year anniversary of the release
by AIS of XESS 1.0.

Pardon me for intruding on this thread, But as a pine user I think I know
what David was talking about... Because I've used pine just that way.

I was able to get sendmail to do this also, but I was still getting lost
in the shuffle when I sent mail from linux to my work email <or my boss'>
because <I think> of the envelope not pointing back to my isp... Untill I
configured pine to use my isp's hostname like David suggested... of course
I also had to set it to use my isp's smtp server directly.

This of course meant that I can't "send" a buch of letters into a
spooler and upload them all at once, but have to be on-line when telling
pine to send each message...

Hello
There is a problem appeared when compiling kernel 2.2.17.
A make generates the following command
as86 0 a o bbootsect.o bbotsect.s
whereupon an Error as86 unknown command occurs.

File bbootsect.s is under /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/
I checked Makefile in that directory and tried to replace as86 command
with as
then I run the make from the root of the kernel tree. as said it has no
0 option so I removed this option and run make again this resulted in
lots of errors reported by assembler.
However in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/Makefile ld was used with 0
option of which it does not know anything( I tried to run separately ld
0 command).

Okay so what is as86 and what is 0 option
Suppose I am missing that as86 package of which I have never heard
anything then where do I get it?
Thanks
Pavel

Thanks to all for replies, which identified the problem correctly; now
fixed.

OK. This says that the incoming user MUST use pap, that they cannot use
chap, and that it is using the login option to pap. This means that the
/etc/passwd database (actually PAM using whatever your password database
is) is used. The /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file must have an entry for each
possible user, and must have a null password.

Eg, say you have users batman and joker
joker * "" *
batman * "" *
must be two entries in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets.
That file must be readable only by root.
Then joker and batman must each have an entry in the user database
(/etc/passwd)

]As far as pap or chap goes I am not sure if or how they are set up. If
]you can tell me what files or configurations to look at or what to look
]for I can provide more information for you. I do not know what the
]debug output is, but if you can explain to me in a few lines I will be
]able to give you more information.

Place
debug
into /etc/ppp/options or on the AutoPPP line
and put
daemon.*;local2.* /var/log/ppplog
into /etc/syslog.conf
and finally do
killall -1 syslogd
Then after someone has tried to connect, look in /var/log/ppplog

I have been using emacs for about 5 years but cannot figure
out what the problem is in your case. I have been using it in the
non x windows interface, run it like this: emacs -nw &
Much faster , and emacs is designed to be used with keyboard commands,
not mouse. It is a good editor. For really-really fast work, you
can use vi of course.

consider asking this on comp.editors* groups, there are also a few
emacs groups.
