Announcing two new articles from GoingWare's Bag of Programming Tricks,
one in the Business section and the other in "On Becoming a Programmer".
from Business:
The Valley is a Harsh Mistress
http://www.goingware.com/tips/misery.html
Founding a high-tech company is an incredibly risky proposition - and
your worries are not over when your product ships, when you receive
venture capital or even when you go public; in fact, VC's and Wall
Street often cause more problems than they solve.
This page discusses the troubles of Working Software, Live
Picture, and embedded operating system vendor Be, Inc. It recommends
a couple of books, one about once-promising startup Go Corporation
and the other a classic on large-scale software engineering.
from On Becoming a Programmer:
Resign with Dignity
http://www.goingware.com/tips/resignation.html
My resignation from now-bankrupt Live Picture Inc, three hours after
receiving the news that it would be moving from a small town in rural
Santa Cruz County to urban Silicon Valley. While I usually advocate
working within your company to work for the better, sometimes one does
not have the power to effect meaningful change, and in such a case a
dignified resignation may be the better choice.

If your looking for a GUI front-end FTP app then gFTP is pretty close to the
WSFTP windows app.

rcp and scp with the -r for recursive work well too on systems where you

Use the WPrefs.App - under "Miscellaneous Ergonomic Preferences you can
select "Raise window when switching Focus with Keyboard
(CirculateRaise)".
Or alternatively add "CirculateRaise = YES" to your
~/GNUstep/Default/WindowMaker

Yes. The first or secod disk from the Suse distribution (ever since about
5.2) is bootable, as are also all the evaluation disks (cheapbytes,
magazine covers etc). You do have the option of booting a good rescue
system, or any installed system (doesn't have to be suse) You can mount
all your partitions, edit all your scripts etc from the rescue system --

Those questions pop-up frequently, there is no single answer.
As different distributions follow BSD or SysV initialisation there is
difference in placing of config files and so on.
For building a workstation or server of any complexity you will have to
administer your box, no helper programms
that will do it for you from start to end.
So a book that relates to administration of Unix/Linux in the basic way,
from the command prompt, will be the best.
Avoid books relating to certain distribution and the current release, those
fade fast.
Have fun.

Also, do avoid the missing hour in spring time. That between 2:00 and 3:00?
Any task which are scheduled during that hour won't run at all.
If I remember correctly, the cron daemon on SCO unix sends a warning
message if you get some sommertime problems like this. Might be a
nice idea to emulate.

It's always a good idea to compress your data before encrypting it;
but lossless compression is usually preferable.

I cannot interpret this stuff, so you must get help from him.
Either mail him directly, or create a new thread, with the findpart/or
svend-olafs name in the header. He's a frequent reader of this NG (or at

Dear sir
I am using a Creative Web3 Cam and have installed a usb driver ov511.o.
However, I need to use the command "insmod ov511.o" to activate it. I
have tried to use xconfig to set "y" instead of "m" and then build
kernel again but cannot work :-(. Is there any place in Linux can
automatically run some commands during startup (such as AUTOEXEC.BAT in
DOS) ?
Please give me some advices on this case.
Thanks a lot
