Subject: compile ddd on RH7.0? where get "code crusader" source?
Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 11:03:10 +1300

Hi, all:

"ddd+code crusader" seems a good combination for development work on
Linux.
I recently updated to RH7.0 from RH6.2. My ddd has problems now. It
seems used old "libstdc++-libc" some stuff.
I downloaded the latest ddd source from gnu site. But the compilation is
not successful!
I rely on DDD to get work done.
Anyone give me some clues to get ddd work on RH7.0?

By the way, I try to get the source of "code crusader" and compile it on
RH7.0.
any one know where get the source of "code crusader"?

Thanks a lot.

Try "telinit 3" on Redhat. Use a different run-level number for
other Linuxes if the non-GUI run-level is not 3.

Hi.

I'm attempting to install alsa 0.5.6 on my linux box (2.2.14 / mandrake

I run "./configure" and "make install" in the driver and lib directories
and everything seems ok. When I "make install" in the utils directory
it says something like:

Just my .02

Lets remember. Hardware works with Windows for one reason. It's not because
windows is so robust that it can just handle it and know what to do. Unlike
the wheel mouse example later in this thread, Windows has nothing to do with
that mouse's extra features. It's the hardware manufacturer that is making
the layer that can talk to the OS. In the case of a wheel mouse, the driver
is basically overlaying a keystroke. Nothing more. Linux shouldnt be bashed
simply because it doesnt have a driver built in to handle that mouse,
neither does windows without a some help. I would call it a testament to
Linux in fact that it has all the hardware support that it does. To me, that
speaks to the ease of coding that linux provides. A stable, open API that
you can pick and bang on is much easier to work with then a few public API
calls on a closed system (what, you think logitech gets Windows source code
so they can make their scroll wheel work?)
It's not the fault of linux that certain pieces of hardware dont work.
Reverse engineering isnt easy, remember that as you foam at the mouth
because the driver for XF86 for that latest whizz bang video card didnt come
out at the same time the hardware did.
I challenge you to compare any version of windows right out of the box to
any linux distro right out of the box on the number and type of hardware
that is supported. I would bet dollars to dimes that Linux will win out.

Hello,

I'm new to linux and have nicely configured sawfish for one of my accounts
on RedHat7. How may I make this setup (background, Panel properties, etc.)
universal for all users?

I tried sawfish --help, but not much info there. Also, no man was found.

there are a couple of files under/home/user/.sawfish dir structure, but I'm
not sure what to do with them. Any help?

odd numbers are teh SECOND number, as in 2.1.1 and 2.3.1 no the last
number. 2.2.17 is the lastest stable.

What an attitude!

There's a minor error in the partition table. With the exception of Partition
Magic 2.03 and Linux, everything else I have is quite happy to live with
it. However, even PM 2.03 does not incorrectly guess the CHS values.

Are you telling me that Windows, OS/2 and FreeBSD are wrong, but Linux
is right? Is it really impossible that fdisk/lilo under Linux are buggy?
Surely you can't be that arrogant.

The BIOS *IS* in LBA mode. My third disk (which used to be attached to
my old PC) was formatted without BIOS extensions, and the SCSI BIOS
warns me about it.

When I boot, the SCSI BIOS prints on the screen the CHS values. I
mis-typed the values, that should have been 1110, 255, 63.

Not when I have other logical partitions that I want to be visible to
other OSes. Type 5 is by far the most universal. We don't all live on
Planet Linux, you know.

As I said, I mistyped the values. The real ones should be 1110x255x63

I set it up for LBA translation originally, and it still is configured
for LBA translation.

I have 2 identical disks (plus a third smaller one). My Tekram DC390U2W
SCSI host does not configure BIOS extensions per disk, it is all or
nothing. Linux reports the correct values for one of the drives (which
has the Linux swap partition). However, the other drive (which has /boot
and the main partition) is incorrectly reported.

I tried using expert mode, setting the CHS to 1110, 255, 63, writing
then booting. However, since the CHS values were already 1110, 255, 63
when it rebooted it didn't make much difference.

Eventually, after resetting the MBR, I corrected the error with
PowerQuest's ptedit. The end of the extended partition was marked as 85
(1109 modulo 1024). It should have been 1023 as a "Large Drive
Placeholder". After that, both lilo and fdisk run OK under Linux.

On Unix and Unix-like OSes, installing multiple versions of Netscape
produces no conflict, if you simply choose different installation
directories for each version.

Yes but not for browser compatibility. The only way to check a web
site against all the faults in all the versions of all the browsers is
to fire up all the versions of all the browsers.

I doubt we will see much improvement until things like JavaScript
become an open International standard where one open source plug in is
used by every browser. The closest equivalent I can think of is the
Photoshop plug in. Just about all of Photoshop's competitors accept
the same plug ins automatically.

I find the Windows NT binaries of PHP etc work well. The installation
is simple for most. Apache is a little tricky because few people
understand services. The problem is setting up a workstation to run a
departmental Intranet or a test web site. Installing all the bits by
hand requires a different knowledge set for each. There is not
equivalent to a Microsoft Office CD.

If the user switches to Mandrake 7 and clicks on Workstation, they get
the GUI but not server apps like Apache. If they click Server, they
miss out on the GUI. That is where the Mandrake help panels come in. I
can work out what is missing and just run the installation process
from scratch using the help panels to find out about custom
installation. Just like NT and other operating systems.

With NT, I can then alter the NT installation script to pre answer
questions and burn a new CD. That new CD will automatically install on
100s of PCs with no problems. To do the same with Linux, you have to
start with far more knowledge of Linux and people with that knowledge
are in short supply.

People like to show me their favorite distro of Linux install in 10
minutes with only 3 questions. Great. Then something goes wrong. The
fix up time is as long as with NT and there are fewer people with the
knowledge.

The take up time for new technology in the computer industry is the
same as in the car industry. 20 years.

XML is a refinement of the 25 year old GML. Hard disks remain
unchanged after 30 years.

The American car industry waited 80 years before admitting disk brakes
are better than drum brakes. They waited another 10 years before
admitting disk brakes are also cheaper to make. The closest equivalent
in the computer industry is the serial port. USB's predecessor worked
on HP calculators 20 years ago but no one took up the idea because it
was too new.

Linux will start winning the big race when a company can take one CD
and roll out 1,000 workstations complete with GUI, StarOffice, a
database, PHP, something equivalent to MS's Personal Webserver and
something compatible with Powerpoint.

I am hoping RedHat 7 has taken on all the good features of Mandrake 7
and will combine that with regular updates. Once every 3 months would
suit my needs.

I use Solaris and Linux for web servers. Considering each server is
serving around 80,000 workstations, the workstation market is far
larger and more influential.

The mass market, the user of the future, works at about the level of
PHP/Visual Basic/Excel macros so will not be able to resort to reading
C code. They need the GUI apps to warn them disk space is running out
and show them where the space went. That was where I started this
discussion. What is the Linux equivalent of Diskeeper or Raxco?

I do not need the GUI apps but find them many times faster so will
stick with NT Workstation until the right set of apps are Gnomed.

Specifically, I need to search through an HTML file, find all url
references within tags, and make them all lowercase. I'm moving a website
from an NT Server to a Linux server, and the case sensetivities are giving
me hell.

So far I have:

sed 's/=\".*\.htm\"/\0/' filename.htm

which properly finds what I want it to, and \0 references the whole find,
but I can't detirmine what I need to to do \0 to make it lowercase.

The reason I can't run tr on the whole file is because the content should
remain in mixed case for readability.

See http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS.html. You will probably need to edit
the XF86Config file (in /etc/X11 for red hat). The most likely options to
add are "no_accel", "no_imageblt", "sw_cursor", and/or "no_linear". Add
some of the options to the "Device" section, different cards with SiS6326
need different options.

Hi, Phil. I've had success with pulling copies of the .saw* stuff into the
other user's account. Chown this stuff
to him, and same with the .gnome files. If there were a lot of users, a script
could pull this off, I think, though I haven't tried that.

The "onto canvases" part might confuse some readers. Glade does not
position fixed-size elements on a fixed-size canvas like most "form
painters" do. Actually, it does everything to make your GUI fully
resizable and flexible, by letting you lay out everything in boxes
with justification, padding and such.

Subject: ssh, scp and batch mode

Hi,

I am confused about using scp in scripts. I run RH6.2 with OpenSSH2.1 but
I believe this problem is more general. I have set up access between a
number of machines using RSA Authentication. The client public user keys
are passphrase protected. I want to use a script to keep system files in
sync across the servers by doing an scp as a nightly cron job.

Both SSH and scp have a batch mode switch (in the config file for SSH and -
B for scp)which stops asking for passphrases or passwords and thus script
usuable. However, I cannot see how to use this switch. With -B in the
script, it doesn't ask for the password, it merely fails (bad passphase).
If you set up the system without passphrases, everything works fine, but
then you don't need the -B switch! Same goes if you run the scripts under
control of ssh-agent - this supplies the passphrase, no need for -B. But I
don't want to leave a shell active overnight, and killing the shell kills
ssh-agent.

It would seem as if the -B option is there for a purpose which could help
me. But how is it meant to be used??

can get the ipchains executable? It is not on the caldera 2.4 build?
