I think the remainder of the post was sarcasm, but I wouldn't swear to that.
I will ask this, though: Why is the OS not on a Flash ROM in the machine? I
power up, I'm sitting at a logon prompt within seconds, and there's no chance
of botching the core OS. Still updatable...I dunno.

The "user" option in fstab implies the "noexec" option. This makes
it impossible to execute files on /cdrom, even if the x permissions
are set. See the man page for mount. To "fix" this, add the "exec" option
explicitly to the options listed in fstab, or do mount -o exec /cdrom
when you mount the drive.

I may be wrong but I believe the option "user" implies the option "noexec"
(which ususally is a good idea). Please check the man pages for mount(8) and
fstab, it should be mentioned there somewhere.

Try re-enabling "exec" and be careful not to enable "suid" (for obvious
security issues).

Date: 1 Mar 1999 13:54:18 -0500

After upgrading the kernel to 2.2.2 on a machine at work,
our HP optical drive doesn't work any more. The kernel
sees the drive, but it can't recognize *any* optical
disks as having valid filesystems (even DOS disks).

This thing is a SCSI drive. Does anyone have any problems
with removable media under Linux 2.2? The kernel has no
problem seeing the root filesystem, which is on the same
SCSI bus.

If I take a kernel with the "kernel level autoconfiguration" option
enabled, and install it on a machine with a normal root file system
(on a hard disk), the kernel seems to take a long time trying to
autoconfigure itself, even though I did not specify the "nfsroot"
parameter on the kernel command line. On a 2.0 kernel, if I don't
specify "nfsroot", the kernel won't try to guess my intentions and
it won't try to autoconfigure.

Does anyone knows how to get the old behavior? TIA.

Interesting, because the EQL I used to use to one ISP didn't work that
way at all, the incoming data all came over one modem until there was a
backlog, then the other modem(s) were used.

That may have been a feature of his Livingston Portmaster, but I don't
think balancing is a feature of EQL per se, any packet will be accepted
on any line.

Hi Erik,
I suspect that you have not got the MANPATH environment variable setup
correctly. In a console window, type the command :-

        echo $MANPATH

if you get nothing back, or an unusual path this is your problem. Edit your
~/.profile and add the following :-

    MANPATH=/usr/man:/usr/X11/man:/usr/local/man
    export MANPATH

Now logout and log back in again. This time when you type the command
'echo $MANPATH' it should return :-

    /usr/man:/usr/X11/man:/usr/local/man

Now you will be able to find the man pages with 'man ls' etc.

    Hope this helps

            Martin

I have Netscape 4.5 in Linux. The 'decrease fonts' and 'increase font' in the menu are
grayed out. The ctl +] and ctl + [ don't work as they do in netscape for Windows.

Another odd thing: In Netscape, the backspace key deletes the letter after the cursor
instead of the letter before the cursor.

Any keyboard shortcut for invoking the menu in linux, similar to Windows' alt + f?

I am about to purchase another linux machine, and the SGI VW look great.
Their base price is terrific. But, I do have some big concerns:

        * Is there a linux X-windows driver by now? (I know that the kernel 2.2
supports it.)
        * SGI has steep non-base prices. So, is RAM user upgradeable? Is adding a
disk internally easy? (SCSI?) Does adding CPUs (especially on the 540) mean
buying just the CPUs, or expensive boards with CPUs sitting on them? (My
experience with DELL is that such boards can add 50% to the price per CPU.)
        * Will the 320 come with the Pentium III rather than the Pentium II?
        * When will the 540 ship? Really.

Anyone else going through these issues?

Sincerely,

/ivo welch

Only in the 8-bit world. In the old ASCII world of 7 bits - not
so long ago. The same key labled # generated # or L (the real
looking pound sign not L ), depending on the mode you set it for.

I recall that the B mode was $ the A mode was the pound sign.
And for the life-of-me I can't recall the sequence of which that
was part - nor do I feel like lookup it up in a Vt102 manaul.

echo $TERM as root and echo $TERM as JoeSixpack, any differences ? If
not stty -a as see above and compare again. You might use stty -g and

Subject: DUN: truncated-IP keep up connection
Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 01:21:21 +0100

Hi there!

I got a strange probem. I'm using SUSE 6.0 and I'm trying to set up a
Linux box which should connect the LAN (Win95-nodes) to the Internet via
ISDN. (ipppd connects on demand). The nodes have no DNS an no default
route. The clients only have access to the Internet via squid-Proxy.
Quite often the the connection is kept up, because some packets seem to
be sent forth and back and /var/log/messages says: 'truncated-ip: 16,345
bytes missing'

What do I have to do?

Thanx in advance, Christian
