Can you read the boot sector OK?
Some of the earlier systems had weird sector numberings. What is needed here
is a raw track reader. In the DOS world there was a program called 'Disk
Explorer' which did the job.

Unfortunately, this is a very common scenario and usually means nothing.
I've experienced it way too many times and learned that even a faulty driver
or BIOS configuration (very likely problem) can cause your card to behave
this way. I suggest playing with your BIOS PnP options, ensure you have
Plug & Play OS set to 'yes' and that all your IRQs are not reserved for
Legacy ISA (ie: they are free to be used by PCI & PnP).
With your card, I highly doubt it's a driver problem to be honest.
Good luck John

Yes.

Each of those topics is potentially quite complex; in fact, there are
entire books devoted to each. Fortunately, there are also shorter
documents. I suggest you start browsing at http://www.linuxdoc.org for
the Linux HOWTO documents. Read the Mail-Administrator, SMB, Firewall,
ipchains, and IP-Masquerading HOWTOs, plus anything you need for more
basic configuration. Alternatively, you could buy one or two books to
get the same information in printed (and possibly better written,
although that's variable) form. My own _Linux: Networking for Your
Office_ covers file sharing and basic firewall topics, but not e-mail.
Craig Hunt's _Linux Network Servers 24seven_ seems to be well-liked,
and covers all three topics, although there's less detail on file
serving than in my book. There are other choices, too. I've got a bit
of information on several at
http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/books-network.html.

Thanks Eric, I was finally able to get the system booted and after checking
/etc/lilo.conf, /sbin/lilo did the trick.
More on the boot problem...
Every time I tried to boot from the boot floppy the
system would hang during the SCSI initialization. I
tried running loadlin from DOS and had the same
problem. I even tried booting from a Debian 2.1 boot
disk. Same problem.
Finally I did one last installation of RH7 using the
text mode install. I rebooted and left to do some
things around the house. Came back about an hour later
and lo and behold there was the RH login screen!!
It now appears that the initial SCSI reset takes a
VERY long time (either that or I'm VERY impatient). Subsequent reboots don't
take nearly as long. Don't know why, but it worked.

...Not to mention that RAID 1 with two drives on a single controller
will make your write speed N/2, instead of merely the same as a lone
drive (N). And read performance will be N at best, and probably a
little less. Properly set up RAID 1 gives you 2N read speed and N write
speed, even with IDE disks.

Ypu are asking from wrong newsgroup :-)
These logs are written by syslogd (or equivalent) -- not sendmail.

Linux is set up so that by default the backspace key sends Control-? (^?).
Many programs expect Control-H (^H) for backspace.
I'm not sure about the best way to work around this.

Honestly I didn't know that there was anything beyond -O3. Does -O9ing
of frequently used packages, like X, KDE or certain libaries like glibc

Referring to the problem, what about QuantaPlus (dunno where, but it's
listed in sourceforge) or Bluefish (dunno where either, it's part of suse).
OK, they're more like Homesite, but still better than vi.

You'll need to study pop/imap, sendmail, samba, and ipchains. In addition, you
may want to read the howto's on DHCP and named (bind) to run on your server to
make management of your network easier.

I have video working with an STB TV card, which uses a brooktree chipset.
I watch TV using xtvscreen because I'm used to that, but I've also gotten
xawtv to work. Years ago, when I first got a bttv version that worked,
it came with a script called update, a makefile, and a script called
MAKEDEV, and you were supposed to set a number in the script update for
the tuner in your particular card. The script would then use xinsmod
to insert the appropriate drivers as binaries. You were not supposed to
use the normal methods of insmoding drivers or compile them into the
kernel. What I found over the years was that the bttv code and the kernel
versions were very volatile, and rather than compiling the binaries from
the makefile, I would copy them into that directory from the kernel tree
after building them as regular modules in the kernel tree. For example,
if I had this in the directory /opt/bttv/driver, I would copy
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/bttv.o to that directory, ditto i2c.o, tuner.o,
whatever else I needed. For sound you sometimes have to do a kernel build
that includes the low-level sound drivers (select OSS modules for this),
to build the msp3400 module.
MAKEDEV would make the nodes for the video devices.
I actually have better luck with some of the older versions, as the newer
versions seem to be for cutting edge, and unstable, kernels.
If this all sounds kind of hairy, well, it is, or has been, for me, but
I find it's a great way to watch TV.
