The reason why I want to do this is to install Minix on my computer.
Minix requires a primary partition.

Yes, you are right. Only 4 partitions are allowed. The only solution
that I can think off is to move the 3rd partition, which is occupied now
by the root(/) of Linux, into the extended partition. Then, I can use the
3rd partition by Minix. I don't know if that is possible though. I am
not sure if Linux can boot from an extend partition or even move its root
to an extended partition.

Hi, All:

When I use the modem for PPP connection to ISP, I should disable the
"Call Waiting" feature.
In Win95, it is easy to disable the configuration of the Modem. But how
could
I disable this "call waiting feature' of the modem when I configure PPP
for linux to connect to my ISP.

Thanks in advance.

tree and ncdt both do that.

The best way to see just what you've got is with dselect, though. There is
no need to try to keep track of all the files yourself. That's what the
package manager is for. If a program is installed you'll be able to run it
without knowing exactly where it is, and it will be able to find its files.

The advantage of cfdisk ( if I may ) is that it puts down a partition table
that is compatable with MS windows' world view.
There are two ways to specify partitions, IIRC.

1) by start & end chs values
2) by start and offset- to-end-of-partition values.

IIRC , 2 is what fdisk uses on a virgin disk.
1 is what cfdisk puts on a virgin disk.
Either of them, if they find an existing partition table, will follow the
conventions found, be it (1) or (2) .

when using cfdisk, there is a set of selections at the bottom of the screen
that may be used to do the necessary operations.
most people ( including me ) forget to use the up and down arrow keys to
hi-lite the part that is free before "creating a new one" .
Somewhere in there, is an option to create an extended partiton.

Does anyone have any experience with wireless network cards and linux. Are
there any that work, are there some to be avoided, etc?

I have one computer with SuSE7.0 and one with Win2k and I would like to

Try compiling SCSI support (CONFIG_SCSI, scsi_mod) and SCSI generic
support (CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG, sg) into the kernel and see if that helps keep
track of the scsi devices. I don't know much about SCSI, but I do know
that I had to do this to use SCSI emulation for my ATAPI dvd-cdrom.
Everything else can be modules, since you do not appear to be booting from
the scsi hard drive.

If dmesg is during boot, and these are not mounted then, maybe the system
forgets about them (if scsi_mod and friends autoclean).

Shouldn't there be aic7xxx module above for your SCSI host adapter? Since
there is no host adapter, maybe that is why ide-scsi loads.

Apparently at that time your system is not seeing any scsi devices, hence
the error from cdrecord -scanbus. It should look something like this,
only showing your devices above (but these are ATAPI and USB emulated):

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00

No, you don't. Type vfat is the extension to FAT that allowed for
filenames longer than 8+3. You can mount a large FAT32 partition as
msdos, and all the filenames will be 8+3. vfat should be the default
type for DOS partitions; type msdos is just about obsolete.

The original poster should check his distro; from the difficulties he's
having, it sounds like he's using something fairly old. All the recent
distros I've seen create a sane /etc/fstab that allows users to mount
floppies with type "auto" by default, and puts vfat ahead of msdos in
/etc/filesystems .

error, no matter what I change (or not) in the configuration:

No recipient addresses found in header

and I'm returned to tin instead of spawning vim for the reply.

How can this be fixed?

I've asked this on the tin maillist, but it's a VERY low traffic list
and I've not received a reply specific to this issue. At one point in
the past, email worked, but now it doesn't. I honestly don't know what I
could have changed, but I've been over EVERYTHING in the setup menu to
no avail.

Any ideas from you tin users?

I don't have call waiting, but I imagine that you just add *70 followed by
1 or 2 commas at the beginning of the phone number. I forget if a comma
is 1/2 sec or 2 seconds, but use enough commas to get the second dialtone.
