Subject: Systems administration shell scripts

The software product Typhon (www.unixscripts.com) contains over 100 portable
Korn shell scripts for text processing, file and directory processing,
customizing your login environment, disk space management, performance
analysis, system monitoring and system security. It includes generalized
login environment files for the Korn shell, bash and the C shell.

Some functions of Typhon:

* Substitute one text string for another in all files in a directory tree,
skipping non-text files. The substitution strings can be regular expressions
  or plain text.

* Display all subdirectories as a visual directory tree.

* Copy a file to multiple remote hosts, with disk backup of the target file on
  each host.

* List all subdirectories in one or more directories, including symbolic links
  to directories.

Typhon is distributed as part freeware, part commercial. You
can download the freeware or purchase the product at www.unixscripts.com.

Dear Friends:

I have an old 486 with 16M of RAM on which a coworker had installed
linux (redhat 4.0). Recently, the bootable harddrive failed. I
have a tape of the system directories (except /dev). However,
I have been unable to boot to any of the "install" or "rescue"
disks--either the install/rescue program crashes or reports that
it can't find the SCSI harddisk (aha1542 controller). I've tried
several different distributions with essentially the same result, so
I'm not taking a different route. (The clever fellow who
got Linux installed the first time has gone on to bigger and better
things).

I've installed FreeBSD, and used some ext2fs utilities from sourceforge
to create an ext2fs on which I have restored the system
directories (/etc, /boot,...). I'd like to make this hard drive
bootable, so I guess I need to do "by hand" some of the things
the install/rescue disk would have done for me if it had worked
(ie, but LILO in the MBR, etc). I understand some of the pieces
involved, but I don't quite know how to do this. Can you advise
me of somewhere I might find out the details?

Thank you.

We are running Slackware kernel 2.0.38 (?). Lately, a lot of users having
trouble logging to the server to extract email.

For some user account, when I trying to telnet to the Linux box as usual,
it keeps saying login incorrect even if the account has been deleted and
re-created. I checked the password and shadow files and did not notice any
problems. Now more and more users are getting this problem.

What should I do? Please give me some advice. Thanks.

Anyone have an idea about this?

No that's not the point. I want to be able to read different floppy
formats, I only want to have the sort order changed for vfat/msdos. So
far /etc/filesystems works, I only would like to know if I could change
the sort order of /proc/filesystems.

I even rebooted the machine (BTW, do I have to do it?)

However, I still can not mount the directory from other machines

Date: Mon, 04 Dec 2000 21:59:54 GMT

Goal:

To perform an NFS Kickstart using DHCP. More specifically, to
only use a network capable kernel to boot the target install machine
and to grab the ks.cfg and Linux installation tree from a server.

Setup:

o I created a boot disk using bootnet.img
o At the boot prompt, I am typing: linux ks
o I can see that it is grabing the Kickstart file from the server (so
at this point, the DHCP is working)
o I can also see that it is mounting the Linux installation tree from
the server
o Then, I am getting the following messages:

On the F1 screen:

failed to read /modules/module-info
install exited abnormally
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems...
/mnt/source
/tmp/nfskd
/dev/ptsxt
/proc
you may safely reboot your system

On the F3 screen:

getting ready to spawn shell now
cannot open shell - /bin/sh doesn't exist

It almost sounds like the chroot'ed environment is not being set
properly when the ramdisk (initrd.img) is being mounted. Just a
guess.

Any suggestions???

Subject: Howto indentify file's owner & group?
Date: Mon, 04 Dec 2000 22:15:59 GMT

Hi,

I need to write a shell script searching for some text/ascii files in a
certain directory. After having found the text/ascii files, I would
like to remove the files and recreate them with the same owner and group
having a 0 length. To search for the text/ascii files in a certain
directory as a regular user with "sudo", all I have to do is to write
the following shell script:

        #!/bin/sh
        DIRS    = "/home/local/tmp /tmp"
        sudo find ${DIRS} -type f > /tmp/file-lists;
        FILE=`sudo file -f /tmp/file-lists | awk -F':' '/ASCII|English text/ {
print $1 }'`

Having found the text/ascii files (listed under $(FILE) variable), I
wrote the following script to 0 length the file to no avail (the files
are still having the original sizes):

        for ff in ${FILE}
        do
                [ -e ${ff} ] && sudo cat /dev/null >& ${ff}
        done

One other way I can think of is to physically remove and retouch the
files as shown below:

        for ff in ${FILE}
        do
                [ -e ${ff} ] && sudo rm -f ${ff} && sudo touch ${ff}
        done

But then, how can I preserve the ownership (including the group) of the
erased files?
Can anyone please help or if you know a better way to archive such task,
please don't hesistate to let mw know. TIA.

Why do this?

When you are logged in as yourself it is easier to su to root so you can run
root commands. Otherwise its log out as you, log in as root.

If you dont want to let anyone perform root functions, dont give them the
password (or SET it to password!!!)

Well I don't have a 1,5 Ghz but I do have a problem that no one seems to be

The output of mkisofs for the 2nd (or subsequent) sessions is not a
complete ISO9660 disk image, therefore you cannot mount it by itself.
The easiest way to check the image is to use isoinfo - part of the
cdrecord/mkisofs package.

Several things could be wrong.

First look at /var/log/messages.

Without reviewing your error logs you can't
tell much.

Then look at /etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny
to make sure that the nfs client machine is
allowed to connect.

Then ps awx and grep for nfsd or whatever the
daemon is on your nfs server. Make sure
that it's started.

BTW - you didn't say what flavor boxes were
nfs servers - I did assume the clients were
IRIX.

Seems to be a common thing anymore. My trouble started late in August and
it's been getting worse and worsr all the time. Sometimes it takes three
or more tries to connect to an ISP, and that many or more times to connect
to a mail server. Times are getting rougher all the time.

I'm not sure how large your hard drive is, but you could try a dual
boot. That way you could keep Windoze on your computer and put Linux
on at the same time. Linux doesn't usually take more than 3 gigs with
some room to spare. If you could get Partition Magic it is possible to
put aside some area on you HD just for Linux and install it there.
That way if you decided later that you didn't like Linux, you could
delete that partition and reclaim it as FAT32. I would recommend a few
things first:
1. make sure that all you hardware is supported by the distro you pick
2. get it on CD, do not download from the internet. Downloading a
linux distro from the web takes forever.
3. read the manuals and study for a while before doing the install.
4. back up your HD.

Hi!

I recently installed RedHat 7 on my computer. It seemed to be no problems
with the installation. But when I ran X I was suprised by how slow the
system was, and so I checked with 'top' how much RAM i had according to the
op-system. 'top' said 13 Meg, when in fact I have about 130 Meg (128 M)
installed. I asked a friend, and he told me this could occur if the BIOS
didn't report the proper amount of memory to the kernel.

And so, he told me to use the flag 'mem=128M' when booting in lilo. But when
booting, the system said that no ram-disk space could be found, and so the
boot was halted. Have anyone outthere experienced the same kind of problem?

Regards Erik
