Audio CDs are not iso9660 *data* CDs. You cannot mount an Audio CD.
*Some* Audio CDs also have a data track, which can be mounted. If you
want to read audio tracks off the disk, you need a program like readcdda
(which is included in xcdroast).

As I recall, audio cdrom's do not have a filesystem of any sort (at
least not directly mountable).
Sorry, don't know how to extract data from them (dd doesn't work, I've
tried it). Maybe someone out there knows?

Anyone? I am a little spotty on the whole patch thing. I have
had mixed success applying patches and the antianti sniffer sniffer
patch is in the fail column.
I downloaded aass.c (antiantisniffersniffer) and the aass.patch
file. Has anyone applied said patch to said file?
On another note, is there anywhere a document to explain the
usage of aass? A simple file to explain command options and
syntax? I have been making guesses based on a look at the
sourcecode but have come up with nothing so far.

Adobe had a product called FrameMaker 5.5.6 beta for linux.
They just announced they are dropping the program. Anyone
using Frame for linux will see it rendered useless on
January 1. And it will no longer be available.
WTF?
Why not just release the code?

Asked and answered a thousand times. You can't mount audio CD's. They
don't have a file system.
By the way, don't you read man pages or the documentation of your
system?

H!
I want to have a talk daemon running on my MDK7.2 system. Therefore i
installed the package ntalk-0.10-1TL.i386.rpm which provides a talk
client and two talk daemons (in.talkd and in.ntalkd). I edited a file
called talk and copied it into /etc/xinetd.d/ because my xinetd.conf
holds the following line:
includedir /etc/xinetd.d
the file /etc/xinetd.d looks like this:
service talk
{
socket_type = dgram
protocol = tcp
wait = yes
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/in.talkd
disable = no
}
but whenever i try to "talk" to somebody my talk client shows the
following error message:
error on read from talk daemon : verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt (111)
knows anyone how to solve that problem?

Is there a telnet tools for Linux out there that has the

This comes from the FAQ, posted on this newsgroup a couple of days ago ...
10.24. "init: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes."
This means, generally, that the system is booting by default into
runlevel 5, which enables a graphical login via xdm/kdm/ gdm/whatever
program, and can't locate it.
In other situations, "Id" might indicate the absence of another
program.
The temporary solution in this case is to switch to runlevel 3, a
standard text-mode login, by typing "telinit 3." To make the change
permanent, set the correct runlevel (1,2,3, or 5) in the initdefault
line of /etc/inittab.
Some systems, however, rewrite /etc/inittab when booting. In that
case, refer to the init man page, and/or the settings in
/etc/sysconfig/init.

Well I don't have a 1,5 Ghz but I do have a problem that no one seems to be
able to help me with. I receive a respawning error when booting into run
level 5:
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast : disable for 5 minutes
using Red Hat 6.2 and KDE 2.0, everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Anyone have an idea what I might need to look at ?

And now I've solved it. I don't know whether it was changing from RH's

hello,
talk is a rpc service and therefor needs the rpc-portmapper running.
you dont really want this stuff on your box tho since the whole
rpc-crap is wellknown for a long, dark history of bugs, slips and
remotely exploitable security holes.
the portmapper also is required for the unfamous
ugly-but-still-hardly-avoidable nfs service.
so if you export nfs-shares you may as well run talkd, just be sure to
read up on and _understand_ the potential security problems nfs/rpc
usually introduce.
i would recommend to rather set up an ircd or instant messenger
service if you need external<->internal live communication, the
talk/rpc stuff is broken by design and should - imo - be avoided
whenever possible.
i will very soon release a console/ncurses-based multiuser splitscreen
chat utility (very similar to talk) on freshmeat. i wrote it up
because i wanted to offer the users on the boxes i admin a simple,
secure way to communicate w/ each other.
the daemon as well as the client both run w/o root-privilegs and
should be rather bulletproof against any kind of attack.
keep an eye on freshmeat.net for "partyline" or if you cant wait drop
me a line and i'll send you a beta-tarball.. :)
the whole thing is almost done, just still got to make it customizable
(config-file), write some documentation and finish off/tidy up the
code...
regards, m.k.

Subject: How do I install ANYTHING in Linux????
Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2000 01:09:07 GMT
Ok, I'm just about completely frustrated. I'm trying to convert myself
from the evil blue screen world of windows, and trying to learn to use
Linux. I have been playing with several different types and find that
I like the Mandrake 7.x versions the best.
My problem:
I try downloading software from the internet to install and try out on
Linux, but I can NEVER figure out how to install anything and make it
work! I keep getting errors saying I need to have QT, PHP,
MySQL...etc..etc...installed. When I try to install the needed stuff,
it never works either or I just do something dumb.
I have the tar -zxvf thing figured out, but from there nothing works. I
try 'make', 'make install', 'make clean', './configure' and all those
different variations of compiling and installing software, but just have
no luck - EVER!
What is the trick to simply downloading and installing software on this
operating system?
I'm just getting completely frustrated with this whole thing.
Anyone out there that can give a newbie some advice??
Thanks,
Tom

I have RH7 w/ lynx 2.8.4. When i try to access a secure login page, I
get the message "This client does not contain support for https URLs".
I looked at the lynx man page and at the lynx user guide. The only
thing I found was the -validate option, but I can not get it to make a
difference.
-validate
accept only http URLs (meant for validation).
This flag implies security restrictions generally more severe
than -anonymous: restriction options as for -restrictions=all,
with the notable exception that *goto remains enabled for http
and https URLs*; in addition, the PRINT and DOWNLOAD commands
are completely disabled, and use of a Trace Log file is forced
off.
Am I on the right track here ... is this the way to get lynx to process
https URLs? Or am I totally misreading this?

I just set up several Linux machines using NIS and NFS on a mixed
Solaris/HPUX network. It was not too difficult.
I had a little bit of a problem getting the Linux machines to export
via netgroups, but it was a bit of confusion/typos on my part, not a
Linux issue.

well supported. I tried 7.0, but I thought that the installation

I like it. It installs well out of the box on my rather unusual
homebrew machine, unlike Corel and RedHat, and I have found it relatively
easy to recover form erros I make when I play with the system.
So it has both reliability and flexbility goung for it. The only
real problem I have is that installing Mandrake 7.2 over 7.1, I
couldn't get the install program to upgrade the system, and
reinstalling over the same system with downloaded upgrades
results in a downgrade. The 7.2 upgrade system, on the other hand,
is easy to use, and bug fixes come out regularly.

Installing via compiling source files can be a painful process.
Especially when the sources in question have many dependencies.
You might consider a couple of things.
- Try to find RPM files of the installations you wish to install.
More and more projects are creating RPM binaries as an alternative
to manual compilation (man rpm).
- Check out the gnorpm app. It can search through remote RPM sites
for available apps.
- Chalk it up as a learning experience. I have learned a great deal
about Linux over the past six years by manuall installing stuff
(back then you had to compile and install everything yourself).
This may not be attractive to someone who wants a drop in solution,
but for me it has paid off. And of course
you can exercise a greater deal of control when installing stuff
manually.
