Kernel source, about 100 MBytes.
Compressed, about 20 MBytes.
Kernel binary on my machines runs about 600kbytes.

I'm running RH7 kernel 2.4.0 on an AMD Duron. Everything works fine, but
sometimes, during normal use my box hangs 100%. Meaning that, XMMS stops
playing, mouse doesn't react, hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL/CTLR+ALT+BS has no
effect. Caps/Scroll/Numlock doesn't react either. All I can do is
hitting reset and wait for fsck finishing.... Haven't lost any data.
I have found no "system" in what triggers the halt. Im running as normal
user and I'm not using any strange/exotic programs. It has happened only
5 or 6 times over a month so it's rare but damn annoying...
Any tricks to corner down what causes this halt?
All help appreciated...
Jacob

A possible way to get the NumLock light to go on [doesn't work on my
machine though!]:
In your .xinitrc file, add a line
xset led N
where N is "some" integer between 1, 32 inclusive.
[First try xset led on to turn on all 32, to see if anything lights up]

i need a littie help here. I'm trying to install caldera open linux to
dual boot on my win98 laptop. i have a 3.5G hard drive and 32M of ram. I
dedicated 1G to linux. One big partition for / and another for swap( i
couldn't make an extended partition, no space) i set up the partitions ok
and opted for the medium size (500M) install. and the installition went
along nicely until i try to start it up for the first time. for whatever
reason, during the boot up process it stalls. the first two lies that
appear before it hands are...
INIT: Switching to run level:3
INIT: Sending Process file TERM Signal.
any one have any insight as to what's going on? If i left out any crutial
info i apologize, and i'd be happy to fill it in.

I've had the same problem, and it looked like both my network card and
soundcard were on the same IRQ, causing a collision. It often happened
when I received an ICQ message and disabling sound there reduced the
occurrences. Setting PnP enabled OS to 'yes' solved it.
Check your /proc/interrupts to see if that _is_ the problem.

When you created two partitions in the place of the one you
deleted you changed the partition numbering and now the kernel
can't find the "/" partition (this is hard-coded into the kernel,
as is the location of the swap partition). To cure it, you will
need a stand-alone floppy boot disk like "Tom's boot/root disk"
(available on the web). Boot from this disk set and then run
"rdev" against your kernel to change the hard-coded locations for
the root and swap filesystems.

Yes, PMMAIL is an excellent mail client. I've been using it in
OS/2 for many years now. I have heard some people say they have
gotten PMMAIL/2000 to work under wine but I haven't tried it
myself. I haven't seen anything quite like PMMAIL in linux, but
ther are many very capable mail clients available for linux; eg
mutt, pine, arrow, TkRat, etc. Another option may be a
java-based mail client such as Polarbar (based on the old JStreet
mailer that succeeded OS/2's PostRoad Mail). Polarbar looks a
good deal like PMMAIL and there are many OS/2 users. I think
somebody has written or is writting a PMMAIL=>Polarbar conversion
utility. My son uses Polarbar on his computer and it runs fine
in Win98, OS/2 and linux for him. Check out
http://www.polarbar.org if you're interested.

I fixed that problem by running linux root=/dev/hda5. This worked and I
cud get the system up and running. I then used fdisk under dos to create
the logical drive on the FAT32 patition. Unfortunately this seems to have
messed up my entire system 'coz when I rebooted Windows says all my FAT32
partitions on the logical drive are not formatted and it looks like I've
lost all files in them. Also when I reboot under linux I get the folowing
error after a few initial messages
Warning: unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: No init found. try passing init= option to kernel
Could you please tell me how I can go about recovering my linux and
windows partitions.
Thanx for your time. I appreciate it very much.

Or, for the non-i386 world, check out
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/os/linux/vif/
This is part of IBM's S390 Linux server site, and describes a feature of the
S/390 that allows you to run "tens to hundreds of Linux server images on a
single S/390 server", each in its own virtual machine.

Hi!
In a c++ programme I wish to read the keyboard. More precisely I
want to make a command in a loop, that does like std::cin>>, but instead
of stopping and waiting for a line and [return] I want the loop to be
continued unaffected until sombody presses, say "s".
I was told it really was a cuestion about the os - although I dont
really know why. I use RH 6.2 and g++ to compile. Maybe one of you
know...
