No. RedHat comes with a non-SSL-enabled lynx, which means it can't navigate
secure protocols. Go to rpmfind.net, and type in "lynx-ssl" in the search
area. This will bring up a list off SSL-enabled lynx rpm packages. Download
one which most suits your system (i.e., one that says something like "RedHat
7.0" beside it) and upgrade to that. Now go to an https URL just like you would
for an http URL.

Boot the 2.2.14 kernel then make an initrd image.
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.0.img 2.4.0
Be sure to use the correct kernel version number.
Then add a line to /etc/lilo for the new initrd image.
initrd=/boot/initrd-x.x.xx.img

I lost LILO when I installed Norton software on the windows side.
I booted from my Redhat (6.0) CD. It found the existing installation,
quickly figured out that it had nothing to update, and offered to make a boot
floppy. Just what the doctor ordered!

I am looking at the ComTrol Hostess 550 8-port serial board, and for the
drivers, it says that the driver is included under Linux. However, I can't
say that I've seen it in "make menuconfig". Does it "just work" (like the
serial ports on a regular motherboard), or do I need to compile in kernel
code?

Subject: KDE Startup in a Solaris NIS Server ENV

1. All user accounts reside on Solaris NIS File server running Solaris
2.6 and 2.8 (we have 2 NIS servers)
2. My Linux Client has been added to the list of trusted hosts on Solaris
servers end.
3. Auto FS works great, and I can login only in ASCII mode.
What is my problem: I cannot get to login in KDE/GUI mode.
Very IMPORTANT point: I have not put anything in /etc/exportfs or
/etc/exports (whatever it is).
When I try to login in GUI, the Solaris Server has no clue about KDE
Desktop. So my local Linux client should in fact COPY the ".kde" data onto
my NIS Account, which is not happening. Since I am not "exporting" anything
from my machine, could someone enlighten me as what I need to do, such that
if a first time Linux Client user were to logon, then the KDE desktop
automatically gets Exported onto his $HOME directory and setup his/her
KDE/GUI Desktop..
Thanks

you said telnet, does it work on local terminal? if so, try reinstalling
telnetd or install sshd.
try to create an unpasswored user and see what happens. Edit /etc/passwd
and add something like:
username::9999:99:description:/home/username:/bin/bash
also actualizing the kernel is not a bad idea ;). if unsure of current
version
use file <kernel path>.

I don't think there's any specific Hostess driver code for
Linux (there are specific drivers for some of the other Unixes.
IIRC, the 4 and 8 port boards are just normal 16550 UARTs that
share an ISR line. I don't remember if all eight UARTs on the
8-port board share a single interrupt or if they're in two
groups of four. I'll look into it. [I work for Comtrol, but

Subject: linux compiler problem??
Date: 6 Dec 2000 23:51:53 GMT
This is a wierd problem so I wasnt sure where to post it.
We're running RH 6.2:
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/egcs-2.91.66/specs
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)
We lost power at work for several hours, when the machines came back up,
I started having a couple different compiler problems yet nobody else
seems to be affected.
Here's the one Im trying to figure out now:
ar -rcus ../../lib/libfe_ondemand.a fod.o fod_init.o fod_io.o fod_main.o fod_signal.o
BFD: fod_init.o: invalid string offset 1769472 >= 102 for section `.shstrtab'
BFD: fod_init.o: invalid string offset 1769472 >= 102 for section `.shstrtab'
Ive been getting these all over the place. Earlier I was seeing
gcc try to link the executable with errors saying a particular
.o file was truncated. I removed the .o and .c, checked it out again,
recompiled with the same results.
I had thought maybe the disk had some bad blocks and was intermittant,
however that doesnt seem to be the case (or so I believe).
Any suggestions?
Ive tried using gcc, ld, make, and ar from other machines (same 6.2),
as well as copying over libc.a etc thinking they might have been
corrupted.
Thanks in advance
Jeff

That's basically not true. On most linux based systems, there are a
lot of binaries in the traditional root fs (i.e. in /bin and /sbin)
that are heavily used, not only on bootup. If they are chached or not
is just a question of what you "do" with your machine.
> Oh .. you are saying that you are striping /usr? Not /? Yes, striping
No, I stripe "/". This of course includes /usr (and /home and ....).
> /usr has advantages. But you lose heavily in robustness by striping
Well sort of. However, my raid arrays until now NEVER failed on
me. Secondly, I have a recovery plan that does not at all depend on a
traditional small functioning root fs.
> /! And you only gain in speed if you stripe over two controllers.
According to the raid documents, you are likely to gain speed as soon
as you have two partitions on two different hds. Different controllers
are the of course real thing, though ;).

Yes -- I did not mean "resizing". It`s just that I run out of space
when I really don't have no more space -- not if just one fixed size
partition is full.
Resizing, btw, afaik IS (or will be) possible with the new style
raidtools, and it should be made easy using "lvm". I have not tried
that, though.
So now, all questions striped!

Subject: Attention NYC Shoppers & Visitors - Beware of Rip-off SY Stores!!! ......
gD4oTWzB8
Date: 6 Dec 2000 23:37:09 GMT
SY stores have been around for about 50 years or so and have only one
objective - TO RIP YOU OFF!
-
They are a constant source of frustration for the NYC Department of
Consumer Affairs, which has been trying to close them down for as long as
I can remember. SY's are the most ruthless merchants in New York. I should
know, I once worked as a stock clerk for one of them.
-
The term "SY" refers to the ethnicity of the shopkeepers. They come from a
small and isolated region of Syria, where for centuries a cult of swindlers
has flourished. Approximately 60 years ago, they started to emigrate to the
U.S. and setup shop along Broadway at Times Square and later moved to some of
the less desirable locations along 5th Avenue.
-
Not surprisingly, SY stores are usually found in areas frequented by tourists.
-
You can always spot an SY store by the odd assortment of merchandise.
Radios, cameras and other assorted electronics on one side of the shop and
on the other; jade, ivory carvings, tablecloths, porcelain figurines,
oriental carpets, etc.
-
SY stores are singular in their objective... To extract as much money from
the customer as possible, *buy virtually any means at all*. There is no set
price in an SY store. The salesman keeps 1/3 to 1/2 of the profit on everything
he sells (which is a strong incentive to overcharge) and overcharge he will!
It is not unusual for these merchants to charge upwards of 500 - 1000% profit
on an item, while leading you to believe that you're actually getting a bargain
(which is the cornerstone of their craft).
-
These merchants are masters of deception and one should not try to match wits
with them. This is their lifelong profession... they've been doing it for
generations and most Americans are simply out of their league when it come to
trickery, deceit and high-pressure sales tactics.
-
A couple of things that might clue you in to the fact that you may stumbled into
an SY store:
-
If the staff speaks to one another in code words or in a language that you
don't recognize... if the words "Lot" or "C-Line" are used frequently in
reference to a specific item... if the price tag is marked with a price that
is demonstrably higher then it's being offered to you for, then chances are
your in an SY store.
-
JUST LEAVE! It will be the best decision you made this holiday season and
both you and your checkbook (as well as your pride) will be all the better
for it.
-
Merry Christmas!

I know what a host name and domain name are, but WHERE do I configure them
in RH Linux 6.2 and what is the syntax? I used the "Linuxconf" utility to
set the host name and domain name for the system. Is there some place that
I need to set it for sendmail?
