No, however you can run into problems with the system map (just warnings,
things usually work just fine)

Slackware's scsinet boot disk would work for this.
More generally, you need to boot a kernel with the scsi support
compiled in.

Hello,
I had a crash on my rh6.2. Therefore I had to check my fs manually.
But it doesn't known my root passwd !!! Therefore I booted the rh6.2
install cd and tryd to call e2fsck manually e2fsck /dev/hda12. e2fsck
means no such device /dev/hda12 !!?? There where no way to get root
acess
and do a drive check.
Furtunally I have a SuSE boot cd. Booting this, I can make I drive
check with e2fsck /dev/hda12. After this I can login with my old
passwd !! No problems more.
What's going on here ????
Thanks Olaf

one suggestion is to look at your logs to see what the error is in the

I always seem to run afoul of quirks during a computer
rebuild, and this one is no exception.
I have installed RH 7.0 and I am in the throes of
adjusting it to requirements.
The problem ; shutdown only works from root and calling
it from my user login gets the "shutdown : must be root. "
response.
The file permissions of shutdown are "-rwxr-xr-x 1root root and
so on"
I thought that the final "x" meant anyone could execute the file
Am I horribly confused again? Answers in BIG simple words, please :-)

New York Linux Users Group Holiday Party (NYLUG.ORG)
Wednesday, December 20, 2000, 6:30-8PM at the IBM building, 9th Floor,
590 Madison Avenue, Manhattan. Located near 57th Street.
In place of our monthly meeting is a very special event, the first
Holiday Party held by the NYLUG.
There will be raffle for a Linux workstation (valued at $1,500)
donated by VA Linux Systems, and a pair of tickets (valued at $200)
for a lucky twosome cruise aboard the NYHRC Party Yacht, donated by
the New York Health and Racquet Club. Tickets at $4 each will be sold
at the meeting, with the proceeds used to help offset the cost of the
party. So please be generous.
Food and beverage will be served, with a big "Thanks!" to Dallas BBQ!
With this meeting's focus on kibitzing and merriment the informal
meeting speaker will be our own Jim Gleason, who will announce our new
officers and the launch of the new and improved NYLUG.ORG Web site.
The meeting will also lend an opportunity to celebrate and mark a
milestone for our group: The two year anniversary of the New York
Linux Users Group.
The year 2000 marked many other events affecting our community, for
example:
* Continued success, growth and press ink for the Linux, Free
Software and Open Source communities
* A stunning high-profile antitrust trial verdict against Microsoft
* An Apple UNIX
* Linux becomes IBM's universal operating system
* The release of the production 2.4 kernel (we hope!)
* Sadly, the recent death of the author of the ubiquitous and happy
sounding Ping utility
On balance we have much reason to rejoice our good fortune, and ample
inspiration to improve our lot and our technical communities. On the
human front let us appreciate and care for our families our friends
and neighbors this holiday season with equal enthusiasm.
In that vein the New York Linux Users Group is sincerely thankful and
indebted to the commitment, generosity and dedication of all the
individuals and sponsors that contribute in ways big and small to the
group and its mailing lists. NYLUG can never have too much of such a
good thing.
See you on December 20th. Bring your good cheer and positive thoughts
for the raffle. And, to those who can't make it for any reason we wish
you a safe, happy and fun holiday season.
January 2001 Meeting Preview:
David G. Korn will be our January special guest speaker. David is the
creator of the Korn shell, one of the many available UNIXen command
line interface shells. If all you know about the Korn shell is that
its O'Reilly book cover is a turtle (why?) or that it is the OpenBSD
project default shell you won't want to miss this meeting.
David will be talking to us about the AT&T AST OpenSource Collection.
This is a collection of software tools and libraries, including tools
such as the Korn shell, nmake, and Graphviz.

Hi there: have now started to use your applixware 5.0 and thought I let
you know how crappy it is. Tried to insert a graphic into a word
document. Have done that countless times with version 4. First of all it's
no longer possible to move a single number once you typed it somewhere
into the graph. Then I saved and exited and a nice symbol appeared in my
word document but not the graph. Clicked on it and get error message that
it's already open for editing - well, it isn't. Then saved the word
document, reopened it, nice symbol again. Printed it - no graph only your
stupid symbol. Clicked on it and applixgraphics comes up empty. Great,
thanks for wasting my time. Pls refund my money. Being in the software
industry does not excuse everything. Ciao,

Its a little like a database: the os keeps a journal of fs changes
between checkpoints. It makes recovery from a crash much faster; just
roll back to the last checkpoint from the logs rather than doing a
full fix via fsck.
A production example is the adfs file system. It is used by Compaq
True64 UNIX on their alphaservers.

Ron,
the final x does indeed mean that anyone can execute the program... BUT
some of the things that the program needs to do may only be available
to root, so there is an internal check to see if the process is running
with root privileges, and in your case it isn't. If you REALLY need to
run this as yourself and not root, you would need to set the suid bit
on the file: chmod u+s shutdown
then it will assume the identity of the file owner (root in this case)
when it runs. An ls -l would then reveal -rwsr-xr-x ...

Hello,
I asume your web-server is 24/7 online, I would not run samba, for
security reasons.
You can sync the files with rsync over ssh if you want.
Or setup apache on the fileserver too.
Sorry, but perhaps you provided not enough info, what you would like to
do, to
give you some meaningfull advice...

On your webserver mount the share from the fileserver at a convenient
mountpoint with smbmount (or mount -tsmbfs, same thing really, just use
whichever your are happiest with) such that the newly mounted
filesystem is visible to the webserver engine... eg: if you are hosting
web pages under /home/httpd/myweb then you might create a directory
called remote in /home/httpd/myweb then mount the samba filesystem
using mount -tsmbfs -oro //fileserver/share /home/httpd/myweb/remote
then the shared files would appear seamlessly
under /home/httpd/myweb/remote. You might need to look at username and
password options for the mount command if the share needs them. Add
the mount to /etc/fstab if you want the share to be mounted
automatically on reboot.

Not sure but maybe something like this.
$IPCHAINS -A input -s 224.0.0.0/8 -d 0/0 -j ACCEPT
$IPCHAINS -A input -s 0/0 -d 224.0.0.0/8 -j ACCEPT
The above is from my firewall script but the ACCEPTs were DENYs.
I believe that's raw.
Looking through the rc.firewall included with rcf-5.0.1 one finds
quite a bit of multicast-related settings though I don't think
any are masqed(??).

I had a previous version of ALSA working (using latest now) but it had a
bug in the sound driver that I use so i waited til it was fixed.
Presumably it has been fixed but the damn drivers , or something, won't

getting teh same problems with it now. Both version I've tried with

well, u might want to tell us what program your friend is using
otherwise we will most likely end up telling u to use a program that
your friend doesn't have. Obviously you are new to this field and don't

Subject: Re: DSL connection?
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 12:52:59 GMT
I use Sympatico's HSE (DSL) service via Linux and I like it as it
works exactly like my old dial up service. HSE uses ppp-oe ... that
is it uses the ppp protocol to communicate over the ethernet card and
DSL modem.
All my dialup firewall rules and /etc/ppp/ip-up (and ip-down)
customization worked transparently when I installed the pppoe client.
The major difference is in initiating the connection, under dialup I
used a shell script "ppp-dial" where under DSL I use "adsl-start" and
"adsl-stop". I put these right in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file so it
connects on any reboot.
As under dialup you still have to authenticate your self (enter your
ID and passoword) to your service provider to prove you are a valid
subscriber. That is one of the main reasons for using ppp for dialup
or adsl.
Some other service providers use other authentication methods, dhcp is
another popular one for cable service but can also be used for DSL.
Go ahead and get DSL, you will not be happy with dialup ever again!
Good luck!
