What does this error message really mean, and how do I correct
the problem causing it:

package README not listed in file index

I get this from time to time when installing or upgrading RPMs.
A number of these RPMs are Mandrake updates.

Thanks....

Excerpt from the README.linux file in the top directory of pppd 2.4.0:

# mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0
# chmod 600 /dev/ppp

If you use module autoloading and have PPP as a module, you will need
to add the following to your /etc/modules.conf or /etc/conf.modules:

/dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async

Or maybe there is a Unix98 pty problem. Read the Documentation/Changes
file in the 2.4.0testxx kernel source directory.

Maybe "Invalid argument" is a clue. Is the 2.4.0testxx kernel used
with a different system intallation that may not have /dev/modem
defined?

As I understand it the 8029 is not supported under Linux. the 8129 and
8139 are.

Subject: Stty questions for serial port modem
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 18:54:16 GMT

Hello,

I have a modem connected to a serial port and need to suppress the EOT
(End Of Transmission) signal. Under SCO OpenServer, you could use the
command 'stty' on the port with the option 'raw' which would take care of
this. Linux (at least RH7) does not seem to define 'raw' the same way for
'stty'?
I want the modem to stay connected after the transmission. We are using
the modem to print to a remote printer connected directly to a modem at the
remote site. When we print to the serial port (through the modems to the
printer) it works... but as soon as the program that is doing the printing
ends, the modem hangs up regardless of whether it finished printing
everything in it's buffer. We are using BASIS Pro5 program to do the
printing, which we have done successfully in the past under SCO
OpenServer...

Thanks for any help or tips,
  Scott Navarre

Init strings. The initialization in Win98 is not being messed with by
whatever you put in Extra settings or you have the wrong INF file installed
for the modem. In your case, someone has modified the Registry to change the
default result code command to one which reports port speed instead.

>
> Is it true that "it's OK, don't worry, no biggie."?

It isn't very important unless you actually want to know the initial connect
speed.

Win9x's DUN is what sets up the init strings based on what changes you make
when establishing the dialup configuration for the ISP.

This ought to be changed to 115200 but it probably doesn't matter since the
port speed doesn't seem to matter to internal modems.

Here's why your modem is only reporting the port speed instead of the
Connect speed.

You, or some "friend" or "tech", hacked teh registry and put in "w0" for who
knows what reason. Perhaps you ran one of those snake oil utilities that
claim to improve your internet speed and it changed it.

Here's the options for the "Wn" command parameter:

Wn Result Code Option
W0: CONNECT result code reports DTE receive speed. Disable protocol result
codes.
W1: CONNECT result code reports DTE receive speed. Enable protocol result
codes.
W2: CONNECT result code reports DCE receive speed. Enable protocol result
codes (default).

Correct that in your Registry or just add W2 to Extra settings and you will
get the actual connect speed reported.

man ps ; man kill

I'm not sure exactly what argument/options you fed ps...

And it does depend on the ps version...

On the SunOs unix I use at work, And I want the process id numbers of
other login sessions I do both a
ps -j
and a
ps -u username

and then start killing the lowest pid numbers on the ps -u username list
that don't show up on the ps -j list...

But on my slackware linux (the 3.5 distribution) at home, it works a
little differently...

<I think>

ps j

and <I think>

ps aj

The man page there said something about NOT putting a - in front of the
options... And I think I had to select all users to get a listing of other
settings... but since I'm at work, I can't be sure which options I needed
there... I always wind up doing a man ps first...<g>

of course, if I'm "root" I'd need to make sure I'm not killing other users
processes by mistake... so if the "ps aj" is correct I might want to

ps j>tmpfilename1
ps aj>tmpfilename2
grep username tmpfilename2>>tmpfilename1
cat tmpfilename1
<selectively kill some pid numbers>
rm tmpfilename1 tmpfilename2

I'm about to try installing ALSA 0.5.10 on Mandrake 7.02, so I've
been reading the Alsa-sound-mini-HOWTO, which says in part:

You need to load the module for your card (or use kmod)
and if you want sound to be backwards compatible with
the Linux kernel sound drivers (yes you want this)
you need two other modules called snd-pcm1-oss and
snd-mixer-oss. See the section Which module for which
card to find out which module to load. After loading,
you can look in /proc/asound for various information
    about the ALSA drivers.

A few remarks. ALSA has it's own devices in /dev/snd,
for example /dev/snd/pcmC0D1 is Card 0, Device 1. You
can use the old /dev/pcmXY devices if you loaded
snd-pcm1-oss for backwards compatibility. You'll also
want to use /dev/mixer, so load snd-mixer-oss as well.

It sounds (no pun) to me like you didn't install the OSS
compatibility modules. Did you? Please let us (ME!) know how
you get this to work.

G'luck....

Probably Windows configures the modem to report the serial port speed
rather than the line speed. This is the default for some modems.

The first line sets the defaults (AT&F), most of the rest is likely
redundant. The \V1 is probably what sets the reporting mode. Check
your modem manual.

following problem.

Problem Description:
====================

When I try to access a Linux-exported directory via Windows NT

"Incorrect password or unknown username for \\<hostname>\<directory>"

It then prompts me for username and password. When I enter one, it
gives me another error:

"\\<hostname>\<directory> is not accessible.
The remote system refused the network connection."

I don't get this problem when I access an HP-Unix machine the same way;
it gives me a directory listing in NT format.

OS Versions:

Subject: Question About Timing Functions Under Linux
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 13:19:54 -0700

Hello:

I am working on an application for the closed-loop control of a
pneumatic system. The plan is for an A/D board to read the value of a
pressure sensor, perform some control-law calculations, and then output
a control value through a D/A to a valve. I set up a bench-top version
of this system running in Quickbasic under DOS, and found acceptable
performance with a 3 mS frame rate, i.e., measure, calculate, and
control at 3mS intervals.

My goal is to migrate this to Linux, and then later enhance it with
2-channel control, a nice user interface, GPIB support, and network
capability. Through the courtesy of the Linux Lab Project, I found a set
of board drivers that I have tweaked for use with my I/O boards. With
the modules installed, I can read from the A/D's, and I can write to the
D/A's. What I need now, is a way to pace this process.

Is there a system timer function that could somehow trigger the process
described above with reasonable precision at the prescribed 3mS frame
rate? If so, how would this be accomplished? Any URL's or code examples
you could point me to?

It bears mentioning that I would still classify myself as a "newbie"
where Linux is concerned, so be gentle! Many thanks in advance.

Subject: i/o errors with scsi tape backup
Date: 20 Dec 2000 20:41:26 GMT

I'm trying to get a scsi tape drive working in debian (potato). Any attempt to use the
drive (mt, tar, etc) results in:
/dev/nst0: Input/output error

The tape is an HP Surestore T20.
The output from dmesg is:

Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 4, lun 0
sym53c896-1-<4,*>: target did not report SYNC.
sym53c896-1-<4,*>: target did not report SYNC.
...

The fact that it is detected on channel 0 is odd, since this machine has the following
cable setup:

"SCSI A" on mainboard -----[hotswap 1][hotswap 2][hotswap 3]----terminator
"SCSI B" ------[scsi tape]--[empty scsi attach]---terminator

Each of the hotswap drives is detected on channel 0 as well:

  Vendor: HP Model: 9.10GB A 80-SA40 Rev: SA40
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi disk sdc at scsi0, channel 0, id 8, lun 0

I have compiled scsi support into the kernel. scsi tape support is a module and is
loaded
with default params. I've tried turning off syncronous mode with:
echo "setsync 4 255" > /proc/scsi/sym53c8xx/0 (I tried 1 as well)

Still nothing. Anyone, please help.

Not so.

  ne2k-pci.c:v1.02 10/19/2000 D. Becker/P. Gortmaker
  http://www.scyld.com/network/ne2k-pci.html
  eth0: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0x7000, IRQ 11, 00:00:E8:F0:5F:92.

All you need it to modprobe ne2k-pci and there it is.

Subject: Re: Question About Timing Functions Under Linux
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 12:54:21 -0800

Hi

I would suggest you to use RTLinux (real time linux) to get very
accurate control over timing.

If you would wanna use normal linux, the gettimeofday() func. gives
microsecond resolution but it has a tendency to lose time when system is
under heavy load.

Another choice is to use /dev/rtc under ordinary linux but you get only
sec. resolution here. (hwclock uses this). You can use it with the
rdtscl() macro to get very precise times.

In ordinary linux your process execution is at the mercy of the linux
scheduler ( not so in RTLinux).

I hope this helps..

Thanks
Aniket

Lynx and elvis and probably some more do use too dark colors so I can't
read them on my monitor. Where can I change these colors either for all
or for each programm?
