I think in that case you need to use the ide-scsi interface as well to

Thus you must get your cdrom to be a scsi device.

Hello all

I am writing a program job of which is downloading many files
(like Teleport Pro)
and I decided to use libwww as an implementation of http.
However I faced an absence of good documentation for this
library. It is not much said on www.w3.org and search
engines point me on that site or to the sites on Perl. Perl is
good language but it is beside the point I am writing in C
now.

So can you point me on site where there are any
documentation on that library?
Or may be there are alternative well-documented libraries?

All in all it is my first project where I am trying to use third
party libraries (sources)
so can you give me some clues how to gain an
understanding of someone else's sources? Particularly from
what point one starts reading them (main())?

Thanks

I have GNOME, and it originally came with Netscape 4.x, and I recently
installed Netscape 6. What do you mean by, "GNOME doesn't even have one

If you just want everything to go through, just don't deny or reject
anything, set your policy to ACCEPT, and thats it.

Sounds right to me! Guess I was confusing here with cross

Subject: Blank screen on 2.4 accessing vfat
Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 16:00:54 -0600

Hello,

I have been using linux for a while now and I have noticed, over the past
few months, that with the 2.4 test series and 2.3 series of kernels, that
I have been having problems with what may be the vfat file system driver.
Whenever I am running one of these kernels and I do some sort of large
file transfer operation from one of my ext2 partitions to my windows
(vfat) partition, I get strange behavior in X. If and only if I am
running X, the screen immediately goes blank and remains blank until I
move the mouse. Upon doing so, it continues to go blank unless I keep the
mouse in constant motion. It is almost as if I have the blank screeen set
up to start at 0 seconds or something. This behavior continues after the
file transfer has completed and the only solution I have found to restore
X functionality is to reboot the computer. I have noted this behavior in
most of the 2.4 test kernels and most recently in the 2.4.0 kernel. I
dont recall witnessing this behavior in the 2.2 series. I do have a VIA
KA-7 motherboard, AMD Athlon 650 processor, and the following hdparm
settings:

hdparm -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 -m 8 -u 1 /dev/hda

If there is any other information that I can supply you with that might
help you in understanding this problem, please let me know. I have
attempted to contact the maintainer of the vfat driver listed in the
kernel documentation, but the email address is no longer active. Please
respond by email.

thanks,

Rodney M Jokerst

Boy, what a bunch of rpms which start with XFree86!
Do I install all of them and in that case in which order? Or is there
a script that can do it for me?

Kernel 2.4.0 can be downloaded from this URL:
http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/kernels/v2.4/linux-2.4.0.tar.gz

Boot/install disks is something you get from the distros and those
usually lag behind a bit with the kernel. In your case you will have
some trouble if you have a hard disk you cannot install on since then
you cannot even compile and thus upgrade your kernel. :-(

I have one of these cards and it worked with Mandrake 7.2 out of the box.
It wasn't difficult to even make the NVIDIA drivers work for OpenGL support

You don't *really* want to install the server itself. Presumably this
machine is on a network with other machines (workstations). You can
install the various X11 libraries and clients by inserting the RH 6.2
CD, mounting it (mount -v /mnt/cdrom), and using RPM to install stuff:

rpm -hiv /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/XFree86-3.3.6-20.i386.rpm
rpm -hiv /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/XFree86-{libs,devel,doc}-3.3.6-20.i386.rpm

(It might complain about stuff it depends on -- just install the missing
bits and pieces.)

You might then need to install additional libraries (gtk, etc.).

Once you have done this, fetch and install sshd (www.openssh.com or
www.openssh.org). Slogin and ssh automatically set things up to run X11
clients 'remotely'.

If you *must* install an X server, you will need to figure out what
server you need, which will either be SVGA or some accelerated server.
You will need to install the fonts, the font server, and the VGA16
server. You then need to install Xconfigurator and use this to
configure your X server. *DO NOT ENABLE STARTING X BOOT UP.* For a
server this a terrible waste of resources. You will be able to fire up
X when you need to with the startx command. I do however recommend
against installing any sort of X server on a file, web, or ftp server. You
can run X11 clients on the server with the display redirected to a
workstation over the network. I run xterms that way over a *dial-up*
connection (33.6K BPS). And all types of X11 clients on a LAN.

I know the feeling. I've still got SPARC 2's and HP 712's, as well as
Ultra 80's and Jx000 HP's. It can be tough, which is why I mentioned
that images were the same within certain classes.

We're starting to use Linux, and that's even worse, as most current
machines are whatever was sitting around unused. That will be changing
soon, I'm developing a corporate image with a small set of hardware in
mind.

We used to do that before the current admin team was formed. I was a
user/programmer back then, and that was bad enough. I'm glad I did not
move into admin until the "secret server" situation was well on its
way out. We call it that because you never knew what functions might
go away if any one machine failed or was shut down. Someone years ago
could have installed an application on a desktop machine and made it
available with symlinks and/or the automounter, then not documented
it. Then when the drive failed, the phone starts ringing off the
hook, it turns out half the users depended on that "secret server".

Those days are gone, thank God.

We outsource all networking and firewall services (EDS, they do a good
job on this actually), this includes all the PC's as well, which I do
not (again, thank Cod) admin.

> machines that have to be accessible from the Internet that attempting to

Ah, our big difference. Absolutely *nothing* on our network is supposed
to be visible from the Internet, and the only connections from the
inside are email, and http/ftp/telnet through a proxy, which most
employees do not have access to.

Our outside corporate web page is designed and hosted by another firm,
is not connected to our network in any way, and company employees
don't even do any of the html design (I was once told that this
eliminated the need for corporate security to examine each update for
accidental inclusion of proprietary information).

*Most* of the RPMs are the various accelerated X servers. You only need
one (or none), depending on your video card. There are a bunch
containing various fonts (some you might not need). There are RPMs
containing the stuff you need to write your own X server from scratch.
