=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hash: SHA1
I upgraded all the system utilities (binutils, modutils, util-linux,
e2fsprogs and ppp) on my Linux box to the versions specified in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes and built the newly released
2.4.0 kernel. I compiled the kernel ppp driver and both sets of
compression code directly into the kernel. The only error messages I
noticed during the build were the normal warnings.
However, when I ran 'make modules_install', I got the following
errors:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.0/misc
depmod: kfree_s
depmod: do_mmap
depmod: waitqueue_lock
I repeat, these were the ONLY errors I got in the entire process that
appeared serious.
I went ahead and rebooted and everything seemed to go fine ... I got
NO errors at all during the init run. I set the permissions
appropriately on the new pppd , but when I tried to start it up, I
got the message that PPP could not run because my kernel does not
support it. The message says that if I compiled ppp support as a
module (I didn't) to try insmod /usr/sbin ... etc.
My basic distro is RH 6.0 upgraded to kernel 2.2.18 and X 4.0 ... I
was calling up ppp from a terminal using chat under enlightenment. I
actually built very little of the kernel as modules, just enough to
keep the image small enough to make a bootdisk with it.
My question is this. Can someone guess why I got the unresolved
symbols from depmod? Could they be the cause of the ppp problem? If
not, what should I look for to solve the problem with ppp?
TAI and regards,
ninewands

Has anyone ever tried to get a Linux box and a Palm Pilot talk to each
other via PPP (or SLIP) for that matter? This is definitely not anything
critical, I just think it would be cool if I could do it.
Thanks,

One of them being that pppd was getting a sigterm.

Well, not here.
I installed KDE2 from rpms for Red Hat 6.2, and these don't seem to
have included documentation. I could build it myself following the
instructions on the KDE site, but it's too much trouble for now. Maybe
not an issue for you under Red Hat 7 (different set of rpms).
As for bundled applications, neither suite (if Gnome's collection can
be called that, and if AbiWord, gnumeric, etc. matter anymore given
Helix has embraced OpenOffice) is anywhere close to as stable
as 'commercial' suites. StarOffice may be a resource hog, but it
provides much more than either KOffice or the Gnome bundle (with the
exception of Gnome's Dia, which is worth keeping as a stand-alone app).
If you're willing to pay for software, Applixware Office is pretty
good, and Xess is the most stable spreadsheet I've ever used on any(!)
platform. Both work just fine under both KDE and Gnome (and twm, FWIW),
so desktop environment doesn't matter much for 'productivity' software.
Konqueror is a good browser, but for me insufficient on its own to
justify using KDE exclusively.
In terms of anecdotal evidence, KDE users seem to like KDE much more
than Gnome users like Gnome. For something a bit objective, see the
Linux Magazine interview with the Nautilus folks (October, November or
December 2000 issue - don't recall which) on why they decided on Gnome.
You've already been given the best advice: use both and decide for
yourself. With both KDE and Gnome installed, you can run applications
from one under the other. Why burden yourself deciding on The One
Desktop when you can use what you want? And both are hogs, so there are
times twm comes in handy.

Hi Group,
I downloaded some freeware for linux (like Star Office etc), using a
Windows PC and saved them in the Windows 98 file system. Now, I have to
use these files to install the software in Linux 7.0. Is is possible to
use these files directly to install them in Linux 7.0 ? Will there be
any file system conflicts involved ?
Thanks,

Slackware user here. You should be familiar with the package
administration tools on your system. For upgrading a package to a newer
version, you use "upgradepkg". Download glibc.tgz (slackware-current has
2.2.3 AFAIK), and run "upgradepkg glibc.tgz". Done it many times w/o any
trouble.

That's news to those of use using NNTP servers. Perhaps the
NNTP server keeps things in that type of directory hierarchy,
and perhaps not. Since it's not visible to the user, it
doesn't really matter.
The "structure of the news spool" for many of us is defined by
RFC-977 and RFC-2980. ;)

I am trying to make a boot hard drive to boot from a
secondary IDE. My lilo.conf is as followed:
#boot=/dev/fd0
boot=/dev/hdc
map=/mnt/floppy/map
install=/mnt/floppy/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
image=/mnt/floppy/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda5
Note that the same lilo.conf works for a floppy (just by replacing
the boot line to /dev/fd0). However, when I mount my secondary
harddrive to the same place (to minimize lilo.conf change) using:
mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/floppy
The same lilo.conf will not work. All I get is an "L" and then
a bunch of 01 dump onto the screen. I also try to use "linear"
to no avail. Any advice.
Thank you for any help,

Hmm. I hadn't landed on that particular variation. However, when I just
tried it I got a few different things:
rj@ncc1701:~$ date --date="jan 1 1970 + 978989450 seconds"
Sat Jan 10 17:40:50 PST 2032
rj@ncc1701:~$ date --date="1 jan 1970 + 978989450 seconds"
Mon Jan 8 21:30:50 PST 2001
Those seconds should have come back as Mon Jan 8 13:30:50. Hmm... 8 hours
diff, 8 hours between me and GMT... I think I see a pattern...
Thanks for the info!

And I've already told you what to do with them. Look, for the MILLIONTH
time: turn on debugging in pppd; divert pppd messages to the file of
your choice (/var/log/messages is fine); show us the log that
results. You'll know it when you see it. Your previous 4 or 5 lines
(from a pppd without debugging turned on) will comprise
about 0.1% of it. You'll get every aspect of the protocol interchange
logged.

Erm. Excuse me, but Eazel has a vested interest in GNOME becoming the

I'm using RedHat Linux 7.0 and NOT liking it. Many problems trying to

My question is, can I downgrade from 7.0 to 6.2 without losing

X 4.0.2, I believe, doesn't include 3d acceleration(the "nv" driver). If
you want accelerated 3d, you'll need to install nvidia's driver (the

Hi,
I use a program which, among other things, includes an Active FTP client. I
have run this software successfully on a variety of Unix systems, but am
having trouble with it on Redhat 7.0 because Redhat expects FTP to be
passive-only. The software which I am using doesn't support passive-mode,
and I am (rightly or wrongly) not sufficiently concerned about the security
issues to figure out how to re-code the program so it will support
passive-mode. FYI, the remote FTP servers are SGI's running Irix 6.X.
Again, this is not the more common-asked case where one wants to either:
(a) use Linux as a firewall
OR
(b) Use the Linux system as the FTP server
So far, I have tried:
/sbin/insmod ip_masq_ftp
but I don't think this is the right solution, and it doesn't achieve the
desired result.
TIA,
-Jonathan

Well it at last it is making sense!
A while back I bought a new HD. When I installed it, I decided to take
some off the swap partition and some off my OS/2 and NT partitions and
add them to my Linux partition. All went well after using Pattion Magic
4.01. That is Nt booted just fine. OS/2 booted just fine. But when I
booted to Linux, it threw up. I retried several times but it did the
same thing. So I booted to NT, looked around the net and found ext2
driver for NT, thank God. My suspicions were right, there was a line in
the /etc/fstab file that I had not put in. It was trying to mount hd19,
where as it should have been trying to mount hdb1!!!
I posted to a Linux NG,trying to find out what happend. Only one person
guessed that it was linuxconf's doing.
Now , based my experience and yours, I know it was PM.
I have used Partion Magic for a long time, and always liked it until
now. I wonder if the newer versions of PM have the same bug in it.
Thanks for confirming my hunches.

They decided to go with Gnome in 1999 when KDE users were much more
numerous than Gnome users. Why? Death wish? Lack of understanding? Lack
of seriousness? Maybe their current explanation for their choice back
then is biased, but the choice itself? I'd like to think they had a
good reason not to have decided on KDE (other than Qt's licensing at
the time). So, if KDE/Gnome users/developers are all biased, counter
biased, pro-Gnome atricles with biased, pro-KDE articles. Name some.
Nuts. This is getting like the Windows vs Mac arguments of yore.
