I know it may seem a bit OT, but why not try using DYNDNS? They offer a
free service where you can run a small utility, which will update dyndns
every time your IP changes if you are on a dialup connection.. Don't know
if this is what you wanted.. If it is, try www.dyndns.conf ...

gpm is for text based terminals, NOT X.
If you boot to a terminal prompt (instead of GUI) you can
use gpm to cut/paste text (I don't think it supports
wheels) and it has its own configuration (NOT part of X windows).
You should not be running gpm when in X.
X has its own configuration. Some programmes may not work with
the wheel mouse but there is the generic imwheel programme that
works in X. It converts wheel scrolls to whatever you want
(usually a sequence of up or down arrow key presses) and it has
its own configuration file (so you can have it NOT do the conversion
for programmes that work with the mouse wheel).
So...
gpm: terminal wheel support
X: has wheel support (at least for some mice/mouses)
imwheel: generic wheel support in X for programmes that don't recognize
the wheel.

Update:
I am convinced that the 30-second connect to login delay is somehow
related to the fact that the clients connecting with wu-ftpd ares
originating from proxy servers. Further, even though reverse DNS
lookups are functioning for each of the users and proxy servers in my
test, I suspect there is something more to the problem.
The stock ftpd on this RedHat 7.0 box did not have this problem. I
have read some other newsgroup posts that elude to the possibility the
identd requests back to the client are failing. While I will hapily
enable this on my own proxy server, I cannot ask my clients to go fiddle
with their proxy server, when they do not see these delays connecting
with other sites -- some of which are running wu-ftpd.
Is there a way to disable wu-ftpd identd lookups on incoming
connections? Am I off base, here, or what?

The advantage of Compact Flash is that's it's rugged. And if he has

I assume that you're building a disk image on another system and
writing the flash with a PCMCIA card. If not, you are doing things the
HARD way.

It's just whatever garbage is left behind in video RAM by Mandrake.

Subject: Re: PCMCIA modem / Lucent / Dynalink / ltmodem568.o
Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 00:34:42 +0100
Hi,
I have successfully compiled and installed ltmodem 5.95test which
support PCMCIA modems. But I have the following difficulty:
watashi:~# lsmod
Module Size Used by
unix 10244 134 (autoclean)
watashi:~# insmod lt_modem
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lt_modem.o
watashi:~# insmod lt_serial
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lt_serial.o
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lt_serial.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
I checked my modem setting under Windows:
Port: COM2
Interrupt: 3
Address: 2F8
UART INS 8250
Highest Speed: 115K Baud
ATI1: E49E
ATI2: OK
ATI3: LT V.90 Data+Fax Modem Version 5.57
ATI4: 70
ATI5: 5.57,2,0E
ATI6: OK
ATI7: OK
AT+FCLASS=? 0,1,8,80
Thus I did the following:
watashi:~# insmod lt_serial Forced=3,0x2f8
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lt_serial.o
In my console, I can read:
Apr 30 23:48:36 watashi kernel: Forced Parameters Irq=3 BaseAddress=0xbc
Apr 30 23:48:36 watashi kernel: Lucent Modem Interface driver version
5.95
Apr 30 23:48:36 watashi kernel: ttyLT00 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a Lucent
Modem
By the way, I do not understand why BaseAddress is equal to 0xbc and not
to 0x2f8 as I forced it.
And then, whenever I access to /dev/ttyLT0, my laptop freezes.
Would anybody (Peter ?) have any suggestion?
Thanks in advance for your help,
David.

Only for MS operating systems. Even then, there are ways to work
around this limitation.

No. Once again, this is a limitation only for MS operating
systems. Linux, OS/2, DR-DOS, etc. all can be installed and
booted from non-primary partitions and/or second HD devices.
> 3. All bootable partitions should start below 1024 MB
Depends on your boot loader. The newer versions of lilo
apparently have removed this problem.

First, if your machine is even fairly modern (say, less than 5
years old) you should have a BIOS option to use LBA to move the
1024-cylinder limit up to around 8GB. Be aware that enabling
this will render your current partitions unreadable, so if you
decide to change it make sure you have good backups or plan to
reinstall from scratch.
Second, only the partition containing your linux kernel needs to
be below the 1024-cylinder cut-off. This can be quite small,
say, only a few MBs.
Third, install your sensible operating system(s) onto logical
partitions rather than primaries. Save the primaries for those
brain-dead MS OS's that actually need them.
Finally, you may want to install a newer version of lilo or one
of the alternative boot loaders (eg "grub" etc.) to obviate the
1024-cylinder nonsense altogether.
