Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 13:02:04 -0700
I've just upgraded my system from a P-II (333) to a P-III (550), and have a
bad feeling that the BIOS is not enabling the L2 cache for this new processor.
Two reasons why:
1. the thing is running horribly, and
2. /proc/cpuinfo reports having a cache size of 32KB - the size of the L1
cache.
Is there any way for the kernel to enable the cache once the machine is
booted? I doubt very much that the vendor will supply me with a BIOS that
recognizes this CPU. Are there other problems associated with this upgrade
that I did not consider? I was under the impression that Slot-1 P-II's and
Slot-1 P-III's were pretty much interchangable as far as voltage was
concerned.

Hi there-
A while ago I saw a program that would allow you to put DOS system
file onto a floppy-disk or a disk image from linux (and actually
have it be bootable). Has anyone out here heard of that program?
I would like to make a 2.88MB DOS bootable image but I lack a 2.88MB
drive :)
Thanks for help.

If the mail is locally delivered (user, pop3) procmail might be the
answer. It is not very intuitive at the beginning, but it's very
powerful in sorting (also to /dev/null ;-) mail.

Hi-
I would setup procmail to filter those messages out. Sendmail has
the ability to send mail to procmail before delivery

I don't suppose there is a microsoft messenger clone for linux out there is
there?
I spend most of my time on the 'net talking to my friends on it and it's
really the main thing which is stopping me switching to linux now.
If not, could I use Wine? I'm a bit of a newbie (but i hate that word).
Can programs running in Wine use an internet connection and...ermm...do
stuff on the 'net?

I have never tried to install Netscape 6, but I would start off by
looking at line 29 in the /usr/local/netscape/run-mozilla.sh file.
The script is probably calling another program. It looks like that
program is causing the seg fault. Is the number after "line 29:"
always the same? That looks like the PID of the failing proccess.

The LM 7.2 distro features a pkg called "Everybuddy" that is _supposed_
to be able to do what you want. It works with AOL's AIM, but I've not
tried it with Messenger.

Thanks, but I don't think this is applicable to a Presario using
GUI. There was a lengthy discussion of later presarios in this or
related groups, but I haven't seen mention of the 16XX series.
It also appears to have some sort of weird bios that interacts with
windows to cause problems. Plus their APM never works consistently right.

Subject: How restore RedHat6.0 bootup login window?
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 15:39:09 -0500
I restarted my server, observed that 3 file system fixes were done. At
the end of that and subsequent reboots, I end up with a gray screen with
a working mouse cursor and no login window. I can do a Ctrl-Alt-F1 and
login fine. All mail, Samba, FTP, etc services are OK.
When I do a ps command, I see that the following processes are running:
/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon (which is a link to /usr/bin/gdm)
/etc/X11/X -auth /var/gdm/:0.xauth :0
and a remote linux box can open up an X terminal using my linux box's X.
I am guessing that /usr/bin/gdmgreeter might be the login program. A
friend of mine has Red Hat 6.1 which shares similar /usr/bin/gdm*
programs . . . except he has gdmlogin instead of gdmgreeter. When
freshly booted up, my Red Hat 6.0 box has no gdmgreeter (or gdmlogin)
process running. My friend's Red Hat 6.1 box has a gdmlogin process
running.
Does anyone know how I can get my login prompt back or where I should
start looking?

You still need to run lilo (even though you boot off a floppy)
after you do the above, run this command:
/sbin/lilo -r /mnt/floppy
This causes lilo to chroot to /mnt/floppy before it does anything
else (lilo is loaded into memory before this happens, of course),
lilo then reads /etc/lilo.conf and updates the boot loader.
(Remember that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is actually on the floppy disk and
in real life it is located in /mnt/floppy/etc)
If you need more help, lilo has extensive documentation.
Hope this helps.

I would also expect a wiring problem EXCEPT for the fact that it
works fine with OSS drivers. I can't get the left CD audio

EXCEPT the audio CD is in stereo.
Any more ideas? Who's got this working?

Back when I was using a unix dial-up account, I used the following
set of procmail filters...
http://www.spambouncer.org
At the time, they were excellent for eliminating spam and you could
configure it to auto-complain to the upstream provider.
You might want to have a lot at it as a "base set" of rules, and
if it doesn't catch "Super Sex Pill" already, customize it yourself.

You can just do ls -1|xargs rm.
The problem is that the directory has so many files that it takes
forever just to list them.

Did you actually hang or was it spending the rtime deleting all the
files?
The problem is now well document as a bug in a prticular version
of logrotate. Check deja.

Get as much RAM as you can afford, and you'll be fine. The trouble with
Compaqs is the same as with any other mass market, cheap computer: they
have onboard sound and video which can be difficult to get working with
Linux. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with them, and they can be a lot
of machine for the money. Even these problems can be solved by adding
sound and video cards (and modems) known to work with Linux, often for very
little money. You can always move these parts to a newer, better machine
when you get one, so they're a sound investment.
But RAM is the key. Linux will actaully make good use of all the RAM you
can throw at it. Processor speed isn't as important with Linux as with
Windows. The only trouble you might have with adding more RAM is the
expense. For an older Pentium I, FPM or EDO RAM is easily twice as
expensive as the newer PC100 and PC133 stuff. But if you have a PII, PIII,
Celeron, or equivalent, there's no excuse. I've been buying 128MB sticks
for $60 lately. And with a late model, fully featured X-centric
distribution like Mandrake 7.2, 128MB is probably the sweet spot for the
average user (as with Win 2000). "Lighter" X setups work fine with a lot
less RAM. I bet you could even run IceWM and Netscape OK with 16MB.
Even if you want to run a lightweight X setup, I still think Mandrake is
the easiest to install and deal with. You can select IceWM from the login
screen, and you can shut down all the daemons and services you don't need
from a simple window with buttons.

There's a program called 'screen' that does exactly what you
want. It is probably installed already. Screen allows you to
start a session, detach if from your terminal, let it run
"detached" and then re-attach to it later (either from the same
or from a different terminal).
I haven't used screen much since I ported it to Coherent many
years ago, but a "man screen" should get you started.

You might try starting on the new host (the one not in the .rhosts file),
then rsh to another host (supplying password since we haven't fixed the
.rhosts file yet). On that second host, look at the value of the variable
$REMOTEHOST for what *it* thinks the new host's name is. Put that value in
the .rhosts file. Also check to make sure the permissions on the .rhosts
are correct (must be readable, can't be world writable).
