Sometimes when I boot my machine, I get that. It seems to be the result
of a bad bootup and rebooting fixes it. I have the following in my
/etc/inetd.conf file:
# Authentication
#
#auth stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/in.identd in.identd -l -e -o
# I have tcpd supervise this and give out ident only to named
# (in hosts.allow) users.
ident stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd in.identd
My conjecture is that inetd is listening on the port (113) and someone
else is listening too. Something is clearly wrong, but I do not know
what. This should come up correctly each time you boot.
For my machine, I have not yet discovered if I have a hardware,
software, or configuration problem. I propose to re-install everything
as soon as I get a new CD-ROM from my machine's vendor (VA Linux
Systems) with their version of Red Hat Linux 6.2.3 on it. If the problem
goes away, it is probably a software problem: I have about a year's
supply of RPMs installed, and they sometimes go in only with difficulty
(cascading numbers of other RPMs required that Red Hat do not supply, or
that I cannot find). If I go to rpmfind (or whatever their name is, I
can often get them, but sometimes they are so incopatible that when I
load them, the system crashes, so I mistrust getting RPMs from other
than Red Hat or VA Linux.

Hello all,
Our company runs a Mandrake 6.1 server with Samba and AppleTalk. When one of
the users creates a directory on the share, it is by default has group write
rights disabled (rwxr-xr-x). This is a pain, because often other people need
to work in that directory. Is there a way to have rwxrwxr-x by default when
the directory is created? This happens to both PC and Mac users.
thanks in advance

Hello,
Simple question I hope. Using RedHat 6.2
The time on my system reads 5 hours too slow yet the time in my BIOS is
correct. I'll assume that the system time is kept seperately from the
BIOS time. How do I correct it please?
Thanks,

Thanks for repeating Linus' comments on pronunciation. I have tried
several times to switch to "linnux" but I have always pronounced Linus
(as in Linus Pauling) as "Lienus" and I invariably revert to "lienux".

To check to see if this could be the problem:
cat /etc/sysconfig/clock
This will show you the clock file. If this could be causing the problem
it will probably look like the one shown.
ZONE="US/Central"
UTC=true
ARC=false
It should look similar to this with the correct country and timezone in
the first line. The second line tells Linux to assume the BIOS clock is
set to the UTC or GMT timezone. If this is what yours looks like then
you should change the UTC line to correct it as shown below.
vi /etc/sysconfig/clock
UTC=false
Be sure to save the change when done then reset the correct time.

Believe it or not the best solution that I've found is Backup Exec. It will
backup NT and Linux. The nice thing is that any non-NT backup agent is free for
Backup Agent.

So you originally tried to do the install just from the CD and you got this
error message.
Then you got the boot.img install floppy and the install seems to have
worked.
Q. Did the install work completely, you partitioned, formatted,
selected/installed packages, you setup for X windows graphical display, you
made a boot floppy, you created user?
Q. I'm wondering why you could not install from the cdrom, what CDROM are
you using, do you have your system bios configured to boot from the cdrom?
Q. Did you create a boot floppy when asked during the install?
Q. Did you install lilo on the master boot record, is it /dev/hda?
Q. How did you setup your disk partitions? Do you have a swap partition?
The message you are getting comes from the kernel/panic.c file which
indicates a major problem probably in filesystem.
Sounds like you have a pretty nice machine. Perhaps you have a conflict
with your hard drive and cdrom. Is the harddrive configured as
master/slave? Primary ide or secondary ide? Perhaps your system bios
settings need adjusting. Or it could be that you did not properly
partition/format the hard drive, but the installer should not have proceeded
if that was the case.
Anyway, these are some suggestions. Hope this helps, email me with more
info and I will be glad to help.

Subject: login gone after glibc upgrade
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 16:17:22 GMT
Hi-
I am running RH 6.2 which had glibc 2.1 and I was using gnome as my GUI.
I wanted to use a java lib which required glibc 2.1.2. So, I found the
rpm for it and upgraded my glibc. Things were fine, the java lib
worked, etc.. After a reboot the RedHat login at the console disappeared
and all I get is a gray screen with an "x" mouse cursor. What happened?
Did glibc upgrade screw up gnome? I can't get into the server via the
console anymore. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have not tried XFree86 4.0.2 myself so I am not exactly sure what it did.
To get runlevel 3 by default when you boot you want to edit your
/etc/inittab file. There are comments at the top of the file (at least on
my RedHat 7.0 system) that describe the runlevels. I have the following
line:
"id:3:initdefault:"
which will boot my system up into runlevel 3 by default. It is possible
that your machine is booting by default into runlevel 5. Or, perhaps XFree
added something to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file which is being run at
startup.
Hope this helps,

Obviously the kernel rpm you downloaded is not for your distribution. It
tried to run a script but it wasn't there.
First, there is no point to try to fix this: compiling the kernel and
install it manually would be easier than trying to fix the above rpm. You
should either wait or spend some time learn how to compile a kernel and
install it.
Besides, you need to update modutils to 2.4.1 and get the latest binutils
installed as well right after kernel is in place and ready to boot.

Thanks to Intel and their "Internet Enhancing" P3 processors with the serial
numbers , kernels compiled for a P3 will have an option now to disable the
cpuid instruction on boot up. When a kernel with such an option is booted on
an amd processor, it hangs, because the amd processors do not have such
"Enhancements" on them.
Solution:
a) Compile your own kernel ( use an older distro to install linux ( 6.0 is
what I use )
b) I think there is a boot up option you pass to prevent the kernel from
doing the "disable cpuid" thing.
With my Thunderbird 700, I do not need any enhancements . I'm still
overwhelmed by the eyecandy the main processor is able to handle . ( Agreed,
I am using a geforce 2 MX , and a V2 )
You may have to tell the kernel how much memory you have . Seems to be a
funny thing with certain main boards , and keeps reoccuring in new messages
.
My experience :
I had w2k, 98 and linux installed on an 8 gig hdd ( P2 350, intel chipset)
Moved it to my current system ( tbird 700, amd 750 chipset ). I unplugged
hdd from one comp, put it into the new one.
w2k : Inaccessable boot devide
win98 : hung when it brought it's ide controller ( protected mode ) on line
.
linux ( rh6.0 2.2.5-15 kernel ) : came up in run level 3 ( that;s what it's
set to do ), I did "startx" , and used netscape to download the updates for
win98, and win2k.
Made the fat32 partitions, and copied the install files to the hdd because
when winXX comes up , it can't see the cdrom on the amd eide controller -
one has to apply the "patch" , and the "patch" was on the frickin' cd ,
which was only acessable from linux at the time.
After installing them, I made ghost images of the partitions, and again used
linux to store the image files on my samba server . Why didn't I use
windows to put the files there ? I was not interested in setting up
networking when it was already working from linux.

Are you sure??? I have never seen ident request from any icq server no

First, with a standalone machine without a gateway/firewall, the only
problem with icq is that you have to allow tcp connection to port
1024-65095 because you cannot know which random port that your icq client
will try to open. Otherwise, incoming connection like peer-to-peer chat
and file transfer will be blocked. Now, this is a big security risk.
With a firewall on the gateway, you are either using ip-masq/nat or Socks5
proxy. You can basically allow non-syn tcp packets to 1024-4999 and allow
only tcp connection to 60200-65095. Then everything else not in the above
range can be blocked by the default deny policy.
Seattle Firewall has preset policy to deal with icq's incoming connection,
you need to tell the config file that you are using which setup:
ip_masq_icq module or port forwarding. Read the manual.

Does anyone have any experience with vmware's products? I find
myself running more and more Windows stuff and I either have to
get another computer in my office or be able to run Windows
on my linux system. I've tried dual boot before and using
StarOffice, but both of those create problems in one way or
another; and from what I hear wine is still a problem with respect
to some of the latest Windows apps and not necessarily that
easy to get up and going.
