It's been a while since 6.1 but did you get the updated boot.img from
the redhat ftp site?

You might want to check "moneydance" or "gnucash" I think one of them
can convert Quicken files but don't quote me on it.

Since the information you provide is somewhat incomplete, I could be wrong,
but I suspect your problem is with the CPU ID. The kernel is assuming
Intel and trying to turn it off, but AMD does not have this feature, thus
the error. There is a parameter you can pass to the kernel to solve this
problem--by typing it at the linux prompt at boot. Unfortunately, it's
been a long time since I've had to use it, so I don't recall the command.
Hopefully, someone else will be able to provide this information.

You can recompile the kernel, turning the ID option off, which will also
solve the problem.

I'm new to linux, and just installed Redhat 7.0. I'm using a 3COM
3C905B ethernet card. It knows the card is there, and I got the 3C90x
module installed. I can ping myself but no other machine. I'm on a
university network behind a firewall the uses a proxy server. I'd
really appreciate any help.  Thanks,

adam.

I have the same card and run into the same problem.

First, the file rtl8139.c is in kernel 2.4, but there is now way to configure it
automaticly. Altough, there a new module for the rtl8139 and it's 8139too...
witch can be configure with the 'make (x)config'... But the card doesn't
work cause the ID of the PCI device is not in the driver.

To do that : first look in /proc/pci to see what is the ID and then add
the definition in linux-2.4.0/drivers/net/8139too.c :

...
typedef enum {
        RTL8139 = 0,
        RTL8139_CB,
        SMC1211TX,
        /*MPX5030,*/
        DELTA8139,
        ADDTRON8139,
        DLINK531,  /* <== added here */
} board_t;

/* indexed by board_t, above */
static struct {
        const char *name;
} board_info[] __devinitdata = {
        { "RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet" },
        { "RealTek RTL8139B PCI/CardBus" },
        { "SMC1211TX EZCard 10/100 (RealTek RTL8139)" },
/*      { MPX5030, "Accton MPX5030 (RealTek RTL8139)" },*/
        { "Delta Electronics 8139 10/100BaseTX" },
        { "Addtron Technolgy 8139 10/100BaseTX" },
        { "DLink Poche Adapter" }, /* <== added here */
};
...
static struct pci_device_id rtl8139_pci_tbl[] __devinitdata = {
        {0x10ec, 0x8139, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, RTL8139 },
        {0x10ec, 0x8138, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, RTL8139_CB },
        {0x1113, 0x1211, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, SMC1211TX },
        {0x1186, 0x1300, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, DLINK531 }, /* <== added here */
/*      {0x1113, 0x1211, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, MPX5030 },*/
        {0x1500, 0x1360, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, DELTA8139 },
        {0x4033, 0x1360, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, ADDTRON8139 },
        {0,}
};
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE (pci, rtl8139_pci_tbl);
...

then do a nice make modules; make modules_install and vlllan !
your driver will be working. no need to reboot; thanks to linus !

strange thing since that in the driver supplied with the adapter there is
more then 30 pci device definition. but on the 2.4 kernel; only 4...

I will look foward to add the definition with Jeff Garzik, the maintainer
of the driver.

a la prochaine !

Hi Everyone,
I scan a range of network devices on my company network and the scan
result comes across several devices with the following message:

Vulnerability found on port general/tcp
The TCP sequence numbers of the remote host are
always incremented by 64000, so they can be
guessed rather easily. A cracker may use
      this flaw to spoof TCP connections easily.

My question is: how serious is this security flaw? How easy is it for someone
to hijack or spoof TCP connecsions (or sessions) from this device? The
reason I am concerned is because this device is directed to the Internet and
it could put the entire corporation at risk. Thanks.

Great stuff, I upgraded from a Plextor 4/2/20 which also is great stuff.
easy to install, use, and whatever, just get your SCSI controller to work

For me, at least, 3c90x has not always worked the way it's supposed to.
3c59x, OTOH, has (with 3c590, 3c900, 3c905B, 3c905C.)  Try that first?

If the problem is still occurring, check the network settings. The
command to do that is "ifconfig && netstat -rn". The netmask, default
gateway, and broadcast address should be the same as other machines on
the network. Or if your network uses DHCP, make sure that pump is being
started upon machine boot.

If no luck, go down the hall and find an experienced Linux user. If
you're at a university, there are some hanging around.

Eric,

I am running RH 7.0 on an A7V with an AMD Athlon 1000. To say it SCREAMS
would be a major understatement!

I have "played" with the 2.4.0 kernel which supports a compile directly
for the Athlon chip. Then it REALLY SCREAMS, wow!

I'd say go for it. Would sugest you run a 400W P/S though as the Athlon
pulls more power than a Pentium III at the same speed. Supposedly this is
due to the L2 cache running at full processor speed.

Good Luck,
KW

Install the nfs, wu for RH6.2 and LPR for RH7.0 Now.

                       Commands to update and effectively close these
vulnerabilities on Redhat Linux 6.2 server:
                       rpm -Uvh

                       Commands to update and effectively close these
vulnerabilities on Redhat Linux 7.0 server:
                       rpm -Uvh
ftp://updates.redhat.com/7.0/i386/LPRng-3.6.24-2.i386.rpm

I did not do any installation of updates on RH7.0 because it was freshly
installed.
I got hacked this morning. I was wondering why my hard disk was
whirling.
I ran 'top' and found 'find' was running.
I turn netscape to 'http://localhost' and sure enough I was hacked by
the Ramen worm.
My printer does not print anymore because they exploited lpr.
I check my security logs and found the offending computer who launched
the attack.
When I turned my netscape to "http://xxx.yyy.zzz.www" and looked at
their website, it
came with the Ramen worm webpage.
I sent an email to CERT notifying about the hack on my computer.
To repair the damage, I went to
http://www.whitehats.com/library/worms/ramen/ and followed their
instruction.
It wiped out all of my index.html with the Ramen worm webpage.
I had to do an upgrade of all the RH7.0 packages I installed. (2 hours
of work)
I had to get all personal index.html from my quite recent backup.
I wrote to www.digitaldesk.com because they said it was a beneficial
worm in their news story.
What a shitty story!!!
The Ramen work causes too much damage to my computer.

Yes, that works, but the question was what to do if you didn't
have Windows or DOS on the machine. In that case, downloading
the image file and writing it to a floppy will work, cost you
essentially nothing, and is legal without any Microsoft license
needed.

I have a couple of speaches on cassette that I would like to make into
mp3s as the tapes are starting to die. The problem that I have is trying
to record off of a tape player hooked up to the sound card. How can I
record directly to a file instead of to memory? The speaking goes on for
about an hour.

Speach isn't a high bandwidth item, so this shouldn't be hard. I'm just
blind and can't find the right place to start.
