Error messages or not, they're still a pain in the arse that slow down
the boot process. The original question was can they be stopped,
either with kernel compilation options or otherwise? But nobody seems
to have addressed that yet. It's more of a discussion on how much it
bothers each individual... ;o)

I have heard of other people having problems when sound is built
into the kernal. I don't know why.
Try building it as a module.

A company called TakeFive created a product called SNIFF that is now
sold by Windriver. This SNIFF or SNIFF+ product has some very
nice code navigation features. Does anyone know of an open source
product for code navigation that is similar to SNIFF? (Preferably one
that runs on Linux or Solaris.) If there is a more appropriate news
group for this question, please enlighten me.

Which OS do you use that you can use wget, lynx AND IE? (Does wget run under
cygwin?)
I use links (http://links.sourceforge.net) for most of my every-day browsing.

I have just purchased a [used] 3 axis stage with stepper motors.
Z-axis (vertical axis) uses a ball-screw, X and Y axes use finer pitched
standard screws. I only have the stage and the three stepper motors. I
do not have any kind of controller, amp, ...
I'm a complete newbie to doing hardware and control systems, but I'm a
seasoned coder and I'm eager to learn.
I'd like to be able to drive this thing off of my Linux box.
Eventually, I'd like to be able to attach a dremmel or other small
cutting tool for a mini-CNC and I'd also like to be able to use the
stage as a high precision optical table for testing telescope mirrors
and optics.
I'm looking for help in getting the necessary hardware and software to
get this thing going.
Thanks.

You're joking, aren't you? Printing messages on the screen doesn't
slow down the boot, and why would you care even if you did lose a few
milliseconds.
If you don't like them, compile them out of your kernel. But they
aren't in my kernel source. I searched.

I suppose you didn't bother to read
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes.
For future reference, this is essential reading: it tells you what you
need to update, to have have a fighting chance of your new kernel
working
correctly. One essential component is modutils 2.4.0.

Think about it. You really want most of your computer's memory
to sit there, empty, rather than retaining an image of the code
required for recently-run processes? Try the experiment of rebooting,
then starting netscape (record the time it takes to get going) then
stopping netscape, then starting it again (how long does it take to
get going?). And think.

Well, lynx has a Win32 version available (don't know about wget). Another
option is to use Win4Lin to run Windoze as an application in order to have
access to IE.

Short of locating and commenting out the appropriate section in the source
code, you cannot eliminate the messages.
However, I don't see why you are unable to do that since the source code is
available.
One of the first places to try would be a keyboard.c , or any file with kbd
at the begining .
Look under /usr/src/linux ( which should be symbolically linked to the
source of your current kernel.
Wait, I seem to recall some option about keyboard support during kernel
compile.
do make menuconfig, and go through the options there.
