Amaya is indeed a GUI program. As to what's wrong with it, it's a buggy
piece of shit that locks and crashes all the time. I haven't tried to use
it in awhile, so maybe it's improved since. I also don't care for its
Motif-ey look. Other GUI design toolkits have come along since that look a
lot nicer, especially in the area of readable fonts.
Other than that, I don't really see a use for Amaya, though some might (if
it actually worked). It's very similar to Netscape Composer in feel and
scope, though the code it spits out is supposedly better. But since it's so
limited in features, almost anyone can write such simple HTML by hand
anyway. So it might be a good replacement for Composer and the like, but
most people looking for a WYSIWYG editor are usually looking for something
more sophisticated. And the answer for them is still to stop wasting their
time trying to do this with Linux, and to go out and buy an iMac or a
Winbox, and a copy of Dreamweaver.
My favorite? Quanta+, which isn't WYSIWYG, but it's very convenient to use.
It's basically a copy of Homesite (for Windows), but better. I can't think
of a better tool for learning HTML. For quick stuff I also use Nedit a lot,
another ugly, Motif-ey app, which works well nonetheless.
Finally, this subject was recently covered on TechTV's "The Screensavers."
You can probably find it in the show notes at www.techtv.com, and it's also
at www.maximumlinux.com

I just installed Linux on a new machine yesterday with this error, I fixed
it by doing the following:
use partition magic to make a 16M boot sector BEFORE cylinder 1024, this can
be found in the info drop down menu under info...
I placed mine first (aka cylinder 0-1) then your other partitions ( / and
/boot) can go either before as primary partitions or later as logical
ones...
it makes no difference in the long run except that you will have /dev/->
hda1, hda2, hda5, and hda6 with I think is a little messy better to make
them primary...
Then install lilo or reinstall Linux (depending on wether you removed or
copied the partitions)

Subject: Java Servlet installation
Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 22:20:16 GMT
Hi,
I am not sure whether this question should be posted to a java
newsgroup or a linux one..
may be both.
anyway, I downloaded the servlet package and installed it.
went exactly by the book (actually Sun's installation guide or whatever),
but when I try to start the servlet by doing:
./startup.sh
or
java -cp runner.jar:servlet.jar:classes org.apache.tomcat.shell.Startup $*
I have the java compiler set in the path, so that's no problem.
When I try to run it, I get
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/apache/tomcat/startup/Tomcat
I tried to fix the problem by making a symbolic link in the
/usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-3.2.1/bin to point to:
ln -s /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-3.2.1/src/org
but it didn't work
also i noticed according to the error, the command should probably be
java -cp runner.jar:servlet.jar:classes org.apache.tomcat.startup.Tomcat
instead of
java -cp runner.jar:servlet.jar:classes org.apache.tomcat.shell.Startup $*
am i correct?
in any case i don't have 'runner.jar' on my system and 'servlet.jar'
is located in /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-3.2.1/lib
what should i do? what is messed up on my system?
i running Slackware 7.1 with upgraded kernel 2.4.0
Kindly post only

You can force it to overwrite an installed copy of a program.
therefore you could do : rpm -i --force mkbootdisk.xxxxx.rpm
>From rpm book page:
"Adding --force to an install command is a way of saying ``Install it
anyway!'' In essence, it adds --replacepkgs and
--replacefiles to the command. Like a big hammer, --force is an
irresistible force that makes things happen. In fact, the
only thing that will prevent a --force'ed install from proceeding is a
dependency conflict.
And like a big hammer, it pays to fully understand why you need to use
--force before actually using it. "

I said FREE SOFTWARE, not "open-source software." There is a
difference, and that was my whole point.
: That doesn't sound like having "nothing to do with Open Source"
: to me.
See:
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html
The terms "free" and "open-source" share a lot of overlap - indeed all
software that is free in the sense of freedom/liberty is open-source,
by definition, and most open-source software is free as well - but
those who are a part of BOTH movements recognize that the difference
in terminology is important.

I solved it myself, I discovered that gpc, the gnu pascal compiler, is
fully borland compatible.
And damn, this thing is fast! The borland compiler pales by comparison!

Hi
I am looking for math software to help me with studying.
What I would like to be able to do is enter functions and see curves
drawn in a window.
Ideally, the package would allow me to compare various functions by
drawing several in the same window.
The package should work in X windows or with gnome or KDE.
It doesn't need to be anything spectacular and professional like Matlab.
This is just to get a reasonable approximation and a graphical view of
things.
Please copy my e-mail as well as the group.

Yeah, I was being sloppy with respect to '/./'.

Paranoia in case it's run as '. abspath somefilename' .

Yes - don't use sed. I didn't test this case. The problem is that the
first and second '/../' overlap, and sed can't back up in the replaced
string. Since I'm much more skilled in awk than perl, I'd change to
#!/bin/ksh
{
for f in "$@"
do
if test "${f#/}" = "$f"; then echo ${PWD}/$f; else echo $f; fi
done
} | awk '{ gsub(/\/\.\//, "/")
while (/\/\.\.\//) gsub(/\/[^/]+\/\.\.\//, "/")
print }'
unset f
But this could probably be done with a one-liner in perl.

Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 12:44:46 +1300
Hi. I have Redhat 6.0 installed on a 1.2GB partition. I think there is about
200-300 MB of free space. (Purchasing another hard drive is not an option
right now).
I have just been given a copy of Slackware 7.1.
The options I am considering are:
1. Try upgrading Redhat 6.0 to Slackware 7.1
2. Trying to get a later copy of Redhat
3. Doing nothing
My questions are:
Can I upgrade my current installation using the Slackware disk?
Do I have the space to upgrade to either Slackware or a later version of
Redhat?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
