i'm screwing around with irix 5.3 on an R4400 XZ indy here, and
because i don't have an sgi compatible monitor (and i really don't
want one of those space'n'power eatin' heat-pumpin' beasts either) i'm
trying to get x apps to display over the network onto my linux pc's
lcd screen. this works for a few things, xcalc (yay!) or the stuff in
/usr/Cadmin/bin but there's quite a bit that won't display.
fr'instance, trying to run some of the graphics demos gives me error
messages to the effect that "remote host is not DGL compatible..."
oooooooooook. what about open GL and all that? not good enough?
what's the story?

I've been using Netscape 6 since pre3 (earlier pre2 and pre1 too buggy). However, ALL
four versions (pre1--release) all used 380MB of RAM when started.
Mozilla takes up about 100MB. It opens 16 java2 JVM's each taking approx 20MB.
Most will SWAP because their not all heavily used. I've sent MANY complaints to
AOL (ok, netscape), but I've never gotton a reply.
Actually, I don't think they care anymore. There are still a LOT LOT LOT of bugs in
NS6. Most of them are quite annoying. Also, it doesn't appear that plugin developers
have any interest in developing plugins for NS6's java architecture.
Some old plugins work (sorta....e.g. flash)...but most crash or don't work at all.
So, NS6 is VERY limitted. I almost can't stand it anymore. I can't convince my wife
to
stop using NS4.76 because she sees me always cussing at NS6.
Well, that's my tirade....I'm thinking of going back to using independent tools for
browser,
mail, and news. Oh, well....probably the best.

I unchecked all the Java stuff in mine, and it only relieves a little
bit; it's still ridiculous.
I hope someone has an explanation for this. I don't understand why some
people's browser only uses 25MB. We're just special, I suppose :)

Yes, but "elses" is pronounced the same as "else's", and the only reason
"Ill" is confusing is because there is another word in English with
the spelling "ill". Without that other word there, "eyell" would be
just as valid a pronounciation for "Ill" as "ihll" is.
"noone" is a special case where you stick two vowels together so they
look like they combine to make a single sound. Words like "cant"
"dont" have that problem.
The only purpose grammar has that really matters is to remove ambiguity.
For example, it's important to know the difference between
"Kill Steve!" and "Kill, Steve!". But often times the grammar doesn't
remove ambiguity at all, and in that case I don't care.

Subject: RAID1 Question
Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2001 05:19:19 GMT
Hi, having some trouble with RAID1. Shoot me if I've said something
wrong.. Does anyone know what the equivalent of
passing "raidstart /dev/md0" to the
kernel is?
I think that's the only step that is missing from getting 2.2 or 2.4 to
work. I have the following setup:
hda3 + hdc3 = md0 (root)
hda1 + hdc1 = md1 (boot)
hdx2 is swap
hda4 is a straight copy of md0
If I boot with either 2.2 or 2.4 kernel to the hda4 partition and try to
mount the drives, it doesn't work. When I issue the command "raidstart
/dev/md0" I can mount the md devices without any problems.
I'm figuring all this because when I boot from either 2.2 or 2.4 to
/dev/md0 I get:
autodetecting RAID arrays
autorun ...
... autorun DONE.
Bad md_map in ll_rw_block
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
etc...
There is nothing in autorun ... autorun so I am guessing md0 never gets
configured during the init process.
Any ideas? Thanks,
John

FTP for KDE2 that's as good as gFTP ?
I'm currently running KDE 2.0.1.
I used to run GNOME that came with RedHat 7, and I liked the gFTP.
Is there an FTP cilent that's as good as gFTP? As you all know, gFTP is
GUI-based, unlike the text-based NcFPT in KDE2.

Well, I share your frustration, believe me.
Don't you think that the java architecture brings too much overhead for
a system (especially a multiuser one) ?? I mean it looks great, but
seems terribly slow and unresponsive...
I would use the old version of netscape, but I need a powerful mail/news
client for Linux. That which comes with NS4 is pathetic, and not good
enough. I would consider using it if I had a separate mail client that
was powerful and professional. Do you know of one?

Are they really OpenGL apps, or possibly something else that is one of
the SGI specialty API's (that are very similar to OpenGL but not truly
OpenGL)?

README says:
: Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area! This area has a (usually
: incomplete) set of kernel headers that are used by the library header
: files. They should match the library, and not get messed up by
: whatever the kernel-du-jour happens to be.
The C "header" files, which are #include'd into source code when compiling
programs, have needed certain bits of information that are specified in
kernel header files, namely, those in include/linux/ and include/asm/.
Traditionally there has been a symbolic link from /usr/include/linux and
/usr/include/asm to directories in /usr/src so that they can be referred to
as <linux/*.h> and <asm/*.h>.
These bits of information also may become encoded into libc (when it is
compiled). Therefore, when using these header files--i.e., when compiling
programs--it is safest if the <linux/*.h> and <asm/*.h> files are the same
as the ones used when libc was built. (Header files aren't used when
merely _running_ programs.)
>From time to time, the kernel developers may make changes in these files
for their own purposes. (The kernel does not incorporate libc.) Thus, it
may be unsafe to change the files in /usr/src/linux without replacing libc.
On systems using the symbolic-link method, the easiest way to do this is to
unpack and build new kernels somewhere besides /usr/src.
Some (mostly Debian-flavored) systems don't use these symbolic links, but
make /usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm regular directories, populated
by the appropriate *.h files. Then /usr/src/linux can include anything you
like.
Finally, as far back as I remember it's been fine to unpack and build
kernels anywhere in the filesystem.

In 2.2.17 and earlier, everything seems to work fine. It's in 2.2.18

By the way (Peter), I tried a recent version of unfsd (2.2-47beta); no

Well, DGL _is_ a tad fancier than OpenGL. You are indeed running into
apps that won't run other than on an SGI box...
